Rating: Summary: One of THE FUNNIEST movies of the past few years! Review: I have seen it 3 times now, and it never fails to make me laugh from beginning to end, especially at certain scenes (like the infamous Internet scene). I can't believe that Roger Ebert thought "There's Something About Mary" was funny and this movie not. I finally saw "Mary" and thought it was more gross than funny. I agree much more with Leonard Maltin, who says "its values are old-fashioned, even if its sense of humor is not." This is so true, and I couldn't have said it better myself. What makes this movie so much better than its raunchy predecessors is the following: 1) It is extremely well-cast, from the hapless character played by Jason Biggs to the choirgirl played by Mena Suvari (who holds the distinction of starring in BOTH great "American" movies in 1999, "American Beauty" being the other one of course). Eugene Levy was THE PERFECT choice to play the father, and was a brilliant casting move. 2) The story, while raunchy, is interesting, believable (very important), very well-paced, and of course, VERY well-written. I still can't count the number of great lines that pop up at the most unexpected times in this movie. 3) The film really DOES have its values in the right place. Watch it, pay close attention, and you will see exactly what I mean. In short: great movie, really funny, must see, must own on DVD. Get the unrated version for the full-throttle effect (oooops, no pun intended- I SWEAR). One last thing: after seeing it, you'll never be able to hear the words "band camp" again without totally breaking out in laughter.
Rating: Summary: Half Baked Pie Review: First the disclaimer, perhaps being English so no high school or prom night and being the wrong side of 30 I missed the point but a lot of this I had already seen in the 80's in Porky's and Lemon Popsicle etc. The story is simple. 4 guys agree to lose their virginity by prom night. Hence lots of trying too hard and lots of failure. The funny parts were laugh out loud funny admittedly. The father explaining the art of masturbation to his horrified son and the guy referring to a sex bible whist the girl is unaware were extremely clever. I am not sure that the supposed tender scenes and realisation that sex is well just sex really worked in a teenage movie. But judging from the reviews and sales I am in a minority but there were just too many unfunny moments.
Rating: Summary: Best teen sex comedy of 1999, hands down! Review: American Pie Score: 77/100 Before watching American Pie you must be warned: your sides will hurt from laughing too much, and this laughter will come from mostly crude and rude jokes that come with endlessly imaginative actions and fantastic one-liners. And after watching it you also must be warned: you will never, ever, ever under any circumstances eat apple pie again, so make sure you have a slice before you watch this laugh-a-minute teen comedy. At a high-school party, four friends Jim (Jason Biggs), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Finch (Eddie Kay Thomas), and Oz (Chris Klein) find that losing their collective virginity isn't as easy as they had thought. But they still believe that they need to do so before college. To motivate themselves, they enter a pact to try to be the first to "score." And of course, the senior prom is their last best chance. As the fateful date draws near, the boys wonder who among them will get lucky. More importantly, do they really want to do it at all? To get the flaws over and done with; Natasha Lyonne is underused, and it is a shame because she is by far the most interesting character in the movie, she has some great quotable parts in the script ("It's not space shuttle launch, it's sex"; "I like to keep my options open") and hopefully, in the up-coming sequel, she'll get more time on-screen. There is also a largely unfunny toilet 'gag' with the character of Finch, the scene totally steals from Dumb & Dumber, and crapping scenes have been done much funnier and much better. Okay, back to the good stuff, the cast is fantastic, Biggs is a great find (unfortunately he kind of ruined his career with some dumb comedies after he invested the part of Jim), Klein is sensitive and believably hip, while the chick-a-dee's like Mena Suvari, Tara Reid and ultimately Buffy's Alyson Hannigan, who manages to steal the entire film with only one line. This is one blast of a fun movie, I can guarantee you'll be chuckling and smiling a long time after watching it. If not perfect, American Pie is easily the best teen sex comedy of 1999. Highly recommended any time, any day.
Rating: Summary: Some New Originality Review: There is a trend in Hollywood for creating teen oriented films that are ridiculous and catered to the teenagers 5 second attention span. Every now and then, one of these movies is worth watch... this is one of them. No, there are not a lot of original jokes or themes in the film, the comedic acting isn't anything new or fresh and the who get laid at prom line of thought has been done many times over... that said, this is a great laugh, again and again. The acting is sufficient to carry of the interaction between the characters, the jokes and physical comedy is original enougg in its execution to provide a good laugh, and everything seems to fall in together... you find yourself laughing at "One time at Band Camp" every time. Many laughs involved in a film that takes formulaic teenaged humor and does a good job of presenting it.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing Trend Review: The hollywood trend continues...that is to say the pandering of film to lower the tastes of film going audiences. This masturbatory mis-adventure about guys who continually objectify women seeks to say that a male adolescent's brain is located too far south of his cranium. The disturbing aspect of it all is that the film was so popular among teens that it seems like a whole-sale endorsement for ignorance. Do you get the fact that what we watch determines little by little who we are? As Hollis Little Creek says, "Be careful what you advertise on your t-shirts, people might just think that's who you are..."
Rating: Summary: It gets better every time Review: This movie is one that can be watched on a monthly basis without getting old. The scenarios are too funny. From the opening scene with the funky music all the way to Stiffler's mom, this one will have you laughing out loud.
Rating: Summary: Rauncy take on highschool comedy Review: Jason Biggs is great as the lovable but gullable Jim, who enters a pact with his best friends to lose their virginity by prom night. Along the way, one of them enters the school choir, because it is an "untapped resource", and another pays a girl to talk about the size of his, well, you get the idea. Jim, of course, can't even find a date. His father, I don't the name of the actor but he is great in this, tries to talk to Jim about sex, and even gives him a stack of skin magazines. But the best moment is deals with Jim assaulting an innocent apple pie, while his father walks in the door. The only difference between the unrated and regular versions of the film is a couple of extra hip thrusts during the apple pie scene. Shannon Elizabeth is also in this, and she enjoys herself too, in another funny scene. But at end of this movie, you will find it has heart, too. A great film for anyone guy who has survived highschool.
Rating: Summary: Possibly the second worst film of the 1990s! Review: What's the worst film you ask? Well how about the pseudo-slasher flick FINAL DESTINATION. That rates a bit lower on my crap-scale but this one isn't that much better. American Pie was reputed by my friends at school to be, and I quote, "A really funny film." The only thing that was funny about this one was how bad it was. And even that got tedious after the film degenerated into a snooze-fest. I cracked a smile once during the entire film (at the MILF scene), and one small joke isn't enough to save this turkey. In my opinion, it's the most overrated film to come out in recent years. The story is painfully earnest in trying to grinde an emoitional aspect to the story. There are some really bad attempts at sensitive moments, and the whole thing is infested with sub-par and totally derivative jokes involving bodily functions and sex. The acting is horrible, and at some points, the filmmakers clumsily set up many scenarios that are both awkwardly acted and directed. What's even worst is that some people actually consider this film to be funny. I once even heard someone comparing this to "There's Something About Mary." Of course, the main difference between "American Pie" and "Mary" is that the latter is actually funny, has a plot, and was very well made. Let's not forget that you can see the UNRATED SPECIAL EDITION... yet more useless and pointlessly un-funny scenes that will further insult the intelligence of you, the educated viewer. In the end... American Pie leaves a sour aftertaste. It not only succeeds in being a really really bad film, but it also is one of the two very worst films in the most distastful genre of film... the late 1990s (MTV inspired) teen genre. So... if you want to see filmmaking at it's worst, that will make you both cringe at it's failed attempts at humor and insult your intelligence at the same time... see "American Pie." Hey, if you really want to see it that bad, it's a perfect representation of the teen genre. I, myself, would rather starve then be served a piece of this pie. 0 stars!
Rating: Summary: Great!!!!! Review: After seeing this movie about six or seven times, I re-rented the film and while on line, I was wondering why I was getting it again. As soon as I turned the movie on I realized why. It's just brilliant. The brilliance of "American Pie" is not the comedy but the whole plot of the four boys, Jim, Kevin, Oz, and Finch, and their pact to lose their virginity by their high school promotion. Kevin, who is now in a long term relationship with his girlfriend Vicki, is tired of of getting no sex and he just wants to have it. Vicki, who just wants to know that Kevin really loves her before they sleep together, gets in a brief fight with him that is immediatly stopped. The relationship between Vicki and Kevin is the major "boy girl" relationship of the movie, but the "father son" relationship between Jim and his father shines even more than that. Their relationship makes you think if all or even any guys and fathers have a relationship as strong as theirs. Those are basically the main highlights of the movie. "American Pie" is indeed very sexual but does not get too provocative for young teens to handle. So, in need of a great comedy that will give you a good feeling at the end? Get "American Pie."
Rating: Summary: An Adult Film About Teenagers Review: One thing is certain: you will never think about apple pie in quite the same way again after watching this film. Don McLean theme-making this is not. If you can set aside your sense of decency and morality long enough to laugh, this film has more than a few to offer. It is not great in the sense of others of this genre like "Animal House," (which doesn't need all the flesh to keep you interested). It's about four very shallow-minded teenage guys who think they can't be real men unless they score first. American Pie has some refreshing twists of plot: it's not so predictable that you find yourself fast forwarding and not completely laden with stock characterization that any actor could substitute for another. The jock who plays field hockey turns out to be the most sensitive of his clique. The awkward father is both believable and very funny. The girls are all likeable and multidimensional. Still, this movie should leave you feeling more than a bit uncomfortable. It's sad to think that a drunk mother would do what the one does in this film or let her son drink in the house any time he pleases. But at least she and her son are not depicted as likeable characters. As usual, the black kids are there mostly as showpieces, saying almost nothing in this film. And the brainy kids, of course, don't stand a chance of getting invited into the party, continuing the time-honored anti-academic tradition of American high school movies. So don't watch this one with the kiddies even when you have that impulse to be "their friend" rather than their parent. And please don't let this film introduce any foreign friends to American pop culture.
