Summary: Neither outrageously funny nor outrageously stupid
Review: Most people describe Loser as either "cute" or "light". These are pretty accurate descriptions of this romantic comedy movie.

Jason Biggs plays a small town boy moving into the "big city", New York, to go to university. His boorish roomates do not appreciate his dedication to his school work and soon ostracize him. As things begin to look bleak, Biggs meets Meena Suvari, a cute coed love interest that just happens to be dating Biggs' self centered, pompous english teacher (Gregg Kinear).

Predictable but amusing, it manages to be funny without excess profanity of nudity. It is a safe bet to watch with your girlfriend.

Summary: Good movie if your expectations are correct.
Review: I had expected to find a movie somewhat similar to American Pie -or one that at least had a little more humor in it. This was by far a love story and although there were occasional funny moments, it was not a comedy. However, I thought the movie itself was good, and the storyline was fine - - it was just my expectation that was wrong. If you want a comedy - - go get Love Stinks or Clerks.

Summary: The Spirit of Molly Ringwald
Review: With the recent onslaught of teen oriented entertainment Loser comes as somewhat of a departure. While films like American Pie and Road Trip have mostly brought in audiences with the promise of the exposure of bodily fluids, Loser takes a slightly different path. First and foremost let's get it out of the way, Loser is cheesy. It's the kind of guilty pleasure that's a throwback to the 80's films of John Hughes which included Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. Jason Biggs plays on his loser persona which made him such a success in American Pie and makes it a little more pathetic. He plays a small town boy who moves to the big city. He's intimidated basically, "because everyone there talks like that show Seinfeld." He's clueless, and at times inspires cringes with his naiveity. He meets a girl, who he immediately likes, but alas she alludes him. She's already shacked up with her smarmy know it all but never the less charming literature professor (played to perfection by Greg Kinnear.) It doesn't take a genius to figure where the film goes from there. What keeps you watching is the puppy dog sweetness that Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari exhibit on screen. It's a chemistry that's more genuine then teen icon Freddie Prinze Jr. has ever been able to illicit from any of his costars on screen. Biggs and Suvari seem genuinely enamored with each other, and it's the "awe isn't that sweet attitude," that pervades in this film. If it's Teen magazine cover boys and body fluid jokes you need to enjoy a teen movie don't see this film. If you enjoy a likable romantic comedy with know nothing teens who stumble around cluelessly for an hour and a half, before realizing they're meant for each other. This is a film you must see.

Summary: Terrible
Review: I rented this sad excuse for a movie based on Biggs' great performance in American Pie. ... Poorer & 95 minutes later I realized that I had wasted both my money & time. Horrible acting, an even worse script & corny one-liners that make you want curl up and die.

In short: AVOID THIS MOVIE LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Summary: Don't Bother
Review: I have never bothered to review a movie for Amazon, but I feel it's my duty to warn you. You'll regret the time and money you waste on such a hackneyed production from Amy Heckerling.

Not only is the male lead a loser, he's a sap too, who repeatedly allows others to take advantage of him and never adapts to his new environment. You want to smack him upside the head. For a far superior comedy using an undergraduate as fish-out-of-water, watch The Freshman.

The female lead has no redeemable characteristics either. She remains attracted to a loser in his 30s, who dresses better than the loser in his late teens, but, nonetheless, continues to be a patronizing intellectual who doesn't hide his contempt of her.

An aside to movie executives: Undergraduates can pay for their tuition through loans and scholarships. They don't have to rely on wages earned at strip clubs. It's not as though her job added anything prurient or substantial to the plot anyway--this movie is rated PG-13.

I like Amy Heckerling, and she has made superior high school comedies-Fast Times at Ridgemont High (director) and Clueless (writer, director). Maybe she's not ready for college.

Summary: The title says it all!
Review: I rented this movie on DVD hoping it will be good but it wasn't. It had a bad plot and horrible acting. I am a Jason Biggs fan and of course the hot actress Mena Suvari but I didn't find this movie funny. It seemed more like a serious movie and a romance movie. It's about a dorky kid who moves into a big city where he finds out that nobody likes him. He moves in with 2 roommates who are really mean to him. He suddenly falls in love with his professor's girlfriend but the kid doesn't know they are in love. Later, the girl falls in love with him back and the kid starts to be cool. See what I mean? I didn't really like this movie at all it was really boring. The only thing good about this movie is Mena Suvari. If you really want to see this movie I would rent this as a date movie or if you want to see a hilarious movie go rent American Pie or Road Trip.

Summary: Witty
Review: Loser was a funny movie. Not a laugh out loud funny movie but more of a chuckle comedy. It was romantic and it showed how it felt to be a loser. You should at least rent, I bought it because I liked this movie. ...

Summary: Totally ripped off from Billy Wilder's 'The Apartment'
Review: When you take your plot from Jane Austen, it's not original, but people will think it's clever. When you steal the plot of an Academy Award winning classic like 'The Apartment, it's just shameless theft, based on the (correct) assumption that young audiences won't know your sources. And when the rip-off is executed so poorly, it's just pathetic. Amy Heckerling, please change careers.
