Rating: Summary: THE BEST COMEDY WITH KISS Review: I saw this movie while I was flipping through the tv guide and decided to watch it and I was hooked. This is the funniest comedy with KISS and 4 KISS freaks like myself. THIS movie is 5 STARS ALL THE WAY. Cool concert clips of KISS which is the cool highlight of the greatest band in the world. These 4 pot-heads are teenagers that will do anything to see their band (I would do the same). Watch this movie if you're a KISS fan and realize why they are the best.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite movies of all time! Review: I CAN'T STOP RECOMMENDING THIS MOVIE TOO MUCH (to anyone who wants to hear it-- or doesn't, for that matter). Everything about it is just wonderful. From the topnotch performances (especially Lin Shaye as the rotten mother and Sam Huntington as the plagued Jem and Guiseppe Andrews as the worrying Lex) to the really dazzling direction (notice how the camera at times is 'all over the place', and the different techniques director Adam Rifkin uses-- there's even some splitscreen in it!) and offcourse the music...I've always been a big KISS fan, but that isn't the reason why I like this movie so much, in fact KISS' performance in the final minutes is only so-so, partly because you can clearly see the're getting really old of age! This movie introduced me to so many other great bands, like STYX, TED NUGENT and UFO-- there's even a song by forgotten glamrockers ANGEL! Besides the music this movie has so many memorable scenes. From the beginning in the basement (notice the Led Zeppelin posters and copies of Hustler magazine), to the mess in school (Elvis the janitor is one mean guy and the girl who farts in the toiletroom) and the hilariously zany quest (those disco guys they run into, talk about Stella and Guido's) to get to the KISS concert. And somehow it all ties up with some of our favorite KISS songs; 'Ladies Room', 'Christine Sixteen', 'Beth'etc. You can clearly see director Adam Rifkin put so much love into making this movie. This really is his ode to his childhood. It's a shame the movie tanked at the boxoffice, but then again there really isn't an audience for this kind of movie (other examples are the also questionable receipts for movies like 'Dazed and Confused' and 'Almost Famous'). I've always been really into the seventies and this movie has so much to offer for nostalgia's sake. Especially the opening credits!! It's one dazzling montage of images that literally sucks you into that period of time and the band KISS we all so worshipped. Also notice the ancient boardgames inside Jem's closet and the paper the teacher is reading in class, which mentions the Guyana tragedy). I only have a few little peeves and those are Eddie Furlong (He clearly is to old to play this part), Shannon Tweed (she's only in it because she's Gene Simmons' squeeze and she really can't act!) and the sometimes heavy duty badgering Jem gets from his mom, this movie is way to lighthearted for that-- although I can see the connection, with KISS in the seventies being accused of Satanism by churchgoers and rightwing politicans. It doesn't spoil the fun though. The fact that I've seen this movie over twenty times already is proof that-- to me anyway. If you haven't seen it, GO RENT IT OR BUY IT! It's a greay movie to watch with your friends while you enjoy a drink and a pizza. YOU'LL BE LAUGHING OUT LOUD because of Hawks friends and their antics! For closers, almost a star extra in my rating because of the great treatment New Line gave this movie while putting it out on DVD. The disc is jampacked with extras, including great audio commentary by the director and KISS and some outstanding videos form EVERCLEAR and THE DONNA'S.
Rating: Summary: Realistic and enjoyable teen movie Review: This teen movie is distinguished by the fact that it is not only set in the 70's but also by the fact that it celebrates the loser, the underdog and ugly adolescence. It has four friends - led by Edward Furlong - who find themselves on a journey to a Kiss concert, trying to raise the cash to get the tickets since one of the group's religiously fanatic mother has burnt their first set. In many ways this is kind of like an underground 'American Pie' in that it's lewd (but not overly so) and represents adolescence with little sympathy. So not only are the characters the underdog but so is the movie itself. Thankfully 'Detroit Rock City' doesn't get caught up in the period that it's set in and the performances all round are altogether better than in many teen movies. Basically it's a simple wish fulfilment movie though, although it depends on your point of view whether it's comendable that the characters don't arrive at a moral conclusion other than 'live life whilst you're young'. At any rate, it manages to set itself apart from the usual batch of sappy teen romantic comedies and it genuinely funny in parts. Plus there's a small role for Melanie Lynskey, the star of 'Heavenly Creatures'.
Rating: Summary: Hot hot hot Review: Friday was my first time seeing this movie. the way it caught my attention was Sam Huntington. I saw a preview on the t.v. and I had to see the movie. Ever since Jungle to Jungle, I have always liked Sam. But I never knew he played on any more movies. So I was excited to see this one. The only problem was... I had to watch it with my boyfriend and he knew that was why I wanted to see it. I can't wait to see "Not Another Teen Movie". I liked Edward Furlong too. I was him in T2, but he is a little old now. So.... Anyhow, I think Sam HUntington should be in more movies! Even though I only wanted to see the movie becuase it had Sam Huntington in it. It was overall an AWESOME movie.
Rating: Summary: One rotten flick Review: This movie is just plain bad. You start out really wanting to sympathize with the four boys. I mean who can't identify with trying to score tickets to your favorite band's sold out show. The problem is they all turn out to be such jerks you end up hoping they get the (...) beat out of them. Not to mention, the portrayal of the Catholic mom and priest is one of the most vicious, mean-spirited, caricatures on film I have ever seen. If the film makers had portrayed blacks, Jews or any other ethnic/religious group in this manner they'd have been drummed out of the movie business. My recommendation is to watch "That 70's Show."
Rating: Summary: Fun film, feature-packed DVD Review: I recently viewed DRC again on late night cable and decided that this is a DVD I should add to the collection. The film vividly recreates the genuine excitement that KISS brought to the late 70s and how this legendary band struck a such a deep bond with its' fans. I still remember my first KISS show (Destroyer Tour) in the Seattle Colisseum and watched so many people literally giving each other "fives" after passing the gates; there was a sense of anticipation that a spectacle awaited us. And I can still remember two long haired dudes getting rowdy cheers after walking around the arena with a huge "Disco Sucks" sign. This film captures the essence of those times. The excellent camera work, crisp editing, and attention to detail make this is a professionally made film all around. There's a good combination of sweet homage to the era mixed with enough over the top humor to keep the film moving at its' frenetic pace. The four lead actors (who seem to mirror their KISS idols in character) and supporting cast (including a surprisingly sweet turn by Shannon Tweed) are all excellent and interact with great chemistry. And after all BS that the kids endure throughout their hilarious saga it all beautifully pays off in the end for the four dudes with a hot KISS concert, just a great way to cap the film. While it's not film perfection (Edward Furlong ending up with superbabe Shannon Tweed? No way!) it's still a lot of fun from start to finish. The DVD is packed with tons of goodies. The deleted scenes are complete sections, not the typical fragments you would normally find on other discs. The commentary tracks (three of them!) were interesting; the disc is bulging at the seams with other extras too numerous to list. My favorite extra was the multi-angle option for the KISS concert sequence; crank up the speakers and let the show take over as you direct your view, very cool. All in all, I think the major studios should take a long look at this disc and take notes on how to put together a DVD package that will keep the movie fan entertained long after the film has ended.
Rating: Summary: Mild Review: In every way, this movie is mild. Mildly funny, mildly entertaining and mildly relevant.
Rating: Summary: Detroit Rock City! Review: This movie was awesome! I never saw it in the theaters because I couldn't get in being too young. So, when it eventually came on one of the movie channels, I watched it. I didn't know if it would be good or not, but I started watching it and got into it. Let me tell you, it was really funny. If I had a mother like that kid, I would die. Plus, the things they did to get to a KISS concert was hilarious. They stole a car from their mother, tried to beat up a kid in a quikie mart, tried to sneek backstage, almost won tickets from a radio station but forgot to stay on the line to give them their information, and even entered a strip contest. I would never have done any of those things to get concert tickets, but its hilarious to watch someone else do it! After I watched it, I went out and bought the movie! The soundtrack is also really good too!
Rating: Summary: Good movie - even if you're not a Kiss fan. Review: Although this film contains a good amount of gross out humour (think Eddie Furlong vomiting into a jug onstage in front of 100 randy females) it is certainly worthwile, even for those who are not great fans of KISS. The performances from the four boys are excellent and good fun to watch, and the rockin' 70's soundtrack keeps the movie rolling. DRC is a good, fun movie which can be watched a couple of times over, and still have the power to make you laugh.
Rating: Summary: A Coming-of-Age story with No Coming-of-Age. Review: "Detroit Rock City" has enough Energy to fill 3 Teen Comedies, and More than enough Laugh-out-Load jokes to satisfy the most Demanding Comedy Hound. It also has a Hidden Sweetness that is Buried under a Pile of Toilet Jokes, Drug References and Sexual Humour. In Short, it's a film for the Whole Family. (at least, all families like Mine) Edward Furlong is the Biggest name in the film (apart from KISS, of course) but he Never hops the Limelight. He plays one of 4 Teenage guys whose dreams of seeing KISS in Detroit fall apart when one of their Mothers finds and Burns their Tickets. They go to the concert Anyway and the Entire Second Half of the film details their Separate Attempts to get Inside The Concert of their Lives. The Four guys give Fun, Breezy Performances, a Little on the Amateur side. (probably as they Are amateurs, expect Furlong. He has reverted back to his T-2 days) A Spectacular Kiss Concert Sequence (including an Inside-the-Mouth camera angle) and Cleverly Conceived Cameos by Adult Film stars Shannon Tweed and Ron Jeremy (who are both very Talented and Comical Performers) make a Great film Even Better.
