Summary: WHATEVER YOU DO, DON't MISS IT THIS TIME AROUND!!!!!
Review: Darth Maul, Austin Powers,John Travolta, and killer sharks... What else would summer 1999 require? KISS. That's what we needed. Recalling "Dazed And Confused" and channeling "Rock N' Roll High School", "Detroit Rock City" is a heaping portion of good fun. Filled to the brim with energy and acted by a cast of clever actors who probably can't even shave yet, this music-packed comedy is just be what the doctor (Dr. Love, that is) ordered. KISS fans might not be too happy to hear that the band isn't in the film for more than 5 minutes, but the DVD extra scenes will more than make up for it. Director Adam Rifkin has made a film not about KISS, but about four teenagers from 1978 Cleveland who drive to Detroit to see the band in concert. Everything from religiously fanatic mothers (The great Lin Shaye), to money-stealing bullies, and even some Disco lowlifes try to stop our heroes as they trek to see the world's greatest band. Once in Detroit, the friends split up to find opportunities to scam their way into the show. It is also in Detroit where each teen learns a very important lesson about life, and just how much KISS rocks. Leading the group is Edward Furlong, who gives his best performance to date. I've never seen him so loose on-screen before. Working with James DeBello, Giuseppe Andrews, and probably the most expressive teenage actor working today, Sam Huntington, they each deliver just the right amount of teenage apathy. You don't come around such a young cast that works so well together too often. It's quite obvious from the brilliant opening credits that Director Rifkin is out to have some fun. He brings back the 1970's with wonderful widescreen lensing, a dab of split-screen, and a soundtrack crammed with classic rock hits. (Go buy the CD!) One after another, the music fills each scene with such vibrant energy. The camera swings and moves with alarming speed. The colors pop and squeak. The era is evoked gently and without(much) sarcasm. "Detroit Rock City" is one of the few films that seems to be the product of genuine love for the era and the music. It's a bright film with an enormous amount of good will. "Detroit Rock City" is often sharp, always silly, slightly tasteless, but a seriously rocking late summer film that made up for the usual garbage that litters August. You wanted the best, you got the best. Don't miss it on DVD!

Review: Having recently viewed Detroit Rock City, I must say I enjoyed it even if it hardly rivals the ultimate "Teens Having Fun in the '70s Film," Dazed and Confused. Of course, DRC is superior to, say, The Stoned Age, but those expecting a seemless look at exactly what it was like to be around in the '70s waiting for KISS to play may be a little let down. It's all good fun, though, with a likeable cast, funny gags, great music, and a killer KISS live song performance (not a full concert) at the end by the actual band. If there's one part of the story which really grated on my nerves, it was the mother who was so against KISS. It might have been a bit overstated and then resolved too smoothly--or maybe it's just that the fact there are some parents out there like this annoys me!As for the DVD extras, they're great for the most part and it's a shame not more DVDs are this "packed to the gills." The director commentary is fun, the deleted scenes a blast, and it was cool to see Gene talk onscreen in full makeup even if (as usual) he's "Mr. Hype." For those serious guitarists, beware the "lesson" on how to play "Rock and Roll All Nite"--you just get the basic chords and no solo shown to you.

Review: Everything about this movie rocks! great plot, great characters,and its very funny. I thought the dvd menus were lacking, but overall it didnt bother me too much, the qaulity of the movie makes up for it, many classic moments in this one. This one goes so well with a spliff, i would reccomend it to rent or even to buy, i purchased and watched it many times, decent amount of extras, has everclear and donnas covering KISS songs , Worth checkin out.

Summary: Snide, sexist, fun...Man, we need more movies like this!
Review: Awesome. I'm a longhaired teenage metalhead and I hate KISS and I love this film in extremes. Just the most fun you can really have with a movie in years, and so much better than boring comedies like American Pie and Austin Powers 2. And you can't go wrong with Lin Shaye's performance as the mom, absolutely wonderful, reminds us all of the things we hate about our parents perfectly potrayed together. This film also contains what I feel is the greatest bathroom scene of all time, got to love that low brow humour at work. The DVD is packed full, with 3 audio commentaries loads of behind the scenes stuff, music videos, script on DVD Rom and on and on, more loaded than any other DVD I've seen. Best DVD for 99, better than Matrix without a doubt in my book. Sure the movie would be heaven if another band was the center piece, something like set in the 90's with a bunch of dudes going to see Strapping Young Lad and beating up korn fans on the way, with a death metal soundtrack...or don't change the setting and make it Black Sabbath as the band, a minor gripe....but hey I'll take this anyday as it is, just glad it was made. We need more movies like this that are completely politically incorrect, sexist, snide, mean-spirited, over the top funny and won't make any apologies for it by teaching us some boring morals lessons (Ala American Pie). Definately a great long-haired stoner film, and great film for all. Look for yourself, not one negative review for it on Amazon yet. Screw morals, let's rock and roll and pass the bong.

Summary: I liked this movie better the first time I saw it...
Review: ...when it was called "Rock N Roll High School". Istill am not sure whether the movie-makers meant this as a"tribute"...Before I even saw the movie, I saw the poster and trailers, and figured it out. I could go on and on about the similarities, but if you've seen R&RHS you know exactly what I mean, if you haven't, you probably are already mad at me and stopped reading. I'm not a big KISS fan (I don't really like or dislike them-kinda neutral), so I didn't especially get into the music part. The kids who played Trip and Lex were especially good, but the kid who played Jam got on my nerves for some reason, possibly just the actor trying too hard. On the negative side, the movie had some pretty predictable moments. There was some gross-out humor that was unnecessary, just nasty and seemed tossed in to jump on the recent trendy gross-out bandwagon.I am no prude but I actually had to look away during one moment involving regurgitation. The movie ended too suddenly. The 70's retro stuff was a little too contrived. (I hate when they go out of their way to mention and prominently feature 8 track tapes, happy face logos, etc) Sorry, but most of the ideas were stolen from Rock-N-Roll High School. Edward Furlong just sorta gives me the creeps for some reason, maybe I read too much about his personal life and it affected how I see him even when he's acting. On the plus side, there were lots of twists to the plot that I didn't expect. There were a few Ramones songs used to great effect on the sound-track (the more I think of it, the more I think the film-makers, or someone involved anyway, were Ramones fans). Lex is a dead ringer for Dee Dee Ramone in the late 70's. The kid who played Trip was pretty talented and funny. Good period detail and costumes. Cameo by Ron Jeremy (another trend lately, but so far it hasn't been run into the ground yet). Some good laughs, and some satisfying moments. You do feel for these kids and want them to get in to the show...we all can identify how bad we wanted to see our favorite band live in high school. And hey, it's not supposed to be Citizen Kane, so why watch itand enjoy yourselves? You could do worse. I could see how this would be, like, the ultimate movie to a KISS fan, just like Rock and Roll High School is to a Ramones fan. But let's face it, if R&RHS had never been made, the film-makers definitely wouldn't have come up with this movie on their own. END

Review: This is an awsome movie!! If you haven't seen it go out and rent it or, buy it w/e i don't care, today...it really is one of my all time favorite movies (the others being dazed and confused, almost famous, adn fast times) This movie is kickass! The soundtrack is great too. This movie makes me wish i lived in the 70's. and all the main characters are hotta!! Anyway you don't have to be a kiss fan to watch this movie, but if you are it won't dissapoint you...Ok well um i'm gong to stop writing now...so go out to your local video store and get this movie you won't regret it...well at least if you have any taste in movies you won't.

Summary: Decent film... but the DVD menu is HORRIBLE.
Review: The film deserves about 3,5 stars - it's an innocent, goofy, coming-of-age comedy with a certain charm. However, its DVD, in spite of all the extended features, has the most revolting, nauseating, user-unfriendly pseudo-menu I have ever witnessed. To begin with, the menu has NO TEXT (sic!) - all options are described by some soulless voice played in the background. As for the look of the options themselves, this is the most repulsive example of pseudo-innovative pseudo-creativity since those performance "artists" who throw feces on paintings and on themselves... the screen is randomly slashed into awful, ugly figures "illustrated" with blurry, oversaturated snapshots from some of the film's scenes (mostly the bad ones). Of course, there is no text and the graphics are as unrelated to what they're supposed to represent as possible (Example: a cut photo of a screaming guy's torso with gamma set to about 4 means "Main Menu"). Sadly, I could not bear suffering this schizoid "menu" and after pressing some keys at random to access any extras, I found myself back in the main menu after a while... Well, at least the film plays by default after the disc is put in. Considering how the "mind" of whoever thought of this "menu" worked, I'm surprised that it doesn't for instance start playing a bunch of laxative commercials instead. Note to studios: employing patients of the locked wards of mental asylums may give you tax breaks, but do NOT have them think up and design any DVD menus next time.

Summary: Good Movie But Don't Expect To See A Lot Of KISS
Review: This is a good movie. I've seen it twice. But I thought I would see lots of KISS, when actually they only perform one song at the end of the movie. It's a film about 4 boys who bought tickets to see their favorite band KISS. Then the mom of one of the boys, finds the tickets and destroys them because she claims the band is "SATANIC". Now what are they to do? Will they make it to see the band, or will they have to wait another until another tour? I'm not going to tell you what happens, you have to get the movie and see for yourself. The one thing I like about the film is that it is pretty accurate with the way it was in high school in the 70's (I know, I lived it). The guys remind me of people I went to school with. In that time, there was disco freaks and hardcore rock and roll fans. Rock and roll prevailed. At the first of the movie, you get to see bunches of clips on KISS, but they are brief, plus, you get shots of KISS memorabilia, and KISS fans dressing like band members. The ending of the movie is both inspiring and C-O-O-L!!! It's got strong language, but not like SCARFACE where one four letter word was used over 140 times. If you like movies with a lot of action, suspense, drama, comedy (the part where they go in the girl's bathroom at school is hilarious), and overall great acting, you are sure to love this movie.

Summary: A movie for Sorts...
Review: This I find was one of the best movies I've seen all summer. It's witty, exciting, and edgy as Trip, Jam, Lex, and Hawk try to make their way to Detroit, Michigan. The guys are all hyped up about seeing the once in a lifetime KISS concert but are slowed down by Jam's mom burning the tickets, guidos and stellas stopping them on the highway after an unfortunate pizza incident, and having their Volvo stolen. I won't give away the end but if your looking for a carefree movie that's extremely random, Detroit Rock City is a must see.
