Rating: Summary: Just one of the best Review: I'll skip the "over-the-top" superlatives of some of the other reviewers in this group, but "Just One of the Guys" is a fun, intelligent comedy with a host of well-drawn characters large and small. It follows the formula -- but it doesn't. Its comedy is three-dimensional. Although it has much to say about teen angst and growing up, it never takes itself too seriously, so we can laugh along the way. Even the class bully is handled with a sense of humor. You hate him, but that's okay because so does everyone else. Is the movie dated? Yes, in many respects it represents its decade -- the 80s. But its humor and its message have not dimmed with the years. It's not just a kid's movie, either. I've watched it many times, and at well over 40, I'm no kid. As for Joyce Hyser, she carries the film with grace and humor and a range that would make most of the "big stars" of the movies today jealous (if they understood what she was doing). And -- as has been noted by another reviewer -- only Leonard Maltin among the "official" critics gives this movie a chance. I hope it comes out on DVD, and that it includes an interview with its star and some of the other principals. A real sleeper. Enjoy!!
Rating: Summary: Better Than Expected - Even At My Age! Review: I just rewatched this movie (too many times to count...) and found it to still be funny (scenes and clothes - really dates itself in the beginning with Terry's pink and white school outfit!), sensitive and clever! It stands out above the other "teenflick" movies due to the amusing and well written/well portrayed script and cast. The actors are not the typically famous names and faces we saw throughout the 80's which separates it even more so...The final scenes after "Terri" reveals herself/write the winning newspaper article, (when other guys who aren't always popular approach Terry) are a reassurance to any teen feeling the all-too-real-pain of non-popularity...I'm 35, never saw the movie when it was first released, but still enjoy it today...And for those reviewers who questioned why this isn't a cult classic...well, I think it is because it is still being shown on those Saturday/Sunday movie marathon stations. Watch it if you get the chance! Buy it for your teenage kids! It's simply a nice movie - good piece of teen-pop-culture!
Rating: Summary: JUST ONE TO STAY ON THE SHELF Review: OK, I admit that I thought this was a hilarious movie when it first came out (mid-80's) and used to watch it every time it was on cable. But now, after seeing it again for the first time in years, it was better left to memory. Some of the most stereotyped, unbelieveable characters ever put on celluloid. ......Number one, Joyce Hyser is a beautiful woman, but a convincing male she does not make (she comes across as a gay 12 year old boy if anything). Number two, this is the most well-endowed "high schooler" (she looks to be about 30!) I think I've ever seen...and honestly I felt a little uncomfortable looking at the bare breasts of an alleged high-schooler. Thirdly, the character of her brother, Buddy, has to be one of the most unrealistic, annoying, over the top, stereotypes of a teenage male that I have ever seen on film. Fourth, the DVD has no extras other than trailers for completely unrelated movies...with no trailer for this film, no widescreen option, no cleaned up picture or sound. Catch it on cable if you must....I prefer to keep it on the shelf and in my memory as a better movie than it is.
Rating: Summary: aspect ratio Review: I'm no expert but I believe this movie was filmed in a soft matted widescreen format (right terminology?). Meaning, the director shot the film matted for wide screen while simultaneously filming in a 4:3 aspect ratio for television. So with the full frame release you see more above and below the wide screen format. It's quite obvious when you are aware of this technique but at least it's not a chopped up pan and scan version. I may be wrong but my eyes tell me I see more film not pan and scan (you'll notice ceiling shots, etc.)Few more comments: The video transfer is descent. IMHO, it's a definite upgrade from VHS. There's no trailer for the movie itself but for those interested, not including me, there's 3 trailers for the movies "Charlies Angels: Full throttle", "Mona Lisa Smile", and "What Ever it Takes". The main menu sports the front cover of the dvd keep case. The subtitle menu reveals buddy posing in a robe with a smoking pipe tucked in his boxers. Last note: If your a fan of the movie I wouldn't hesitate adding this dvd to your collection, otherwise, a rental should be considered at the most.. thanks,
Rating: Summary: the movie is great (5 stars), but the dvd is okay. Review: Well first of all, this dvd has a glitch in it. When Terry(Joyce hyser) enters the school as a guy now, u see a quick flash of light right before, she meets the blonde bully guy. Its a second glitch but, it should have been checked before release! The other thing is, people say that it was open matte shot, the movie, but when the movie begins it says This film has been modified from its original version, the widescreen version. So columbia where is the widescreen version??????? Other than that i recommend the movie/dvd!
Rating: Summary: UNDERCOVER ANGEL FINDS TRUE LOVE AS A GUY Review: This is one of those "dumb" movies that I like a lot. The set up is totally unbelievable. What teenage girl could independently go "undercover" as a teenage male student in another High School for the sake of a school newspaper article? Well, of course, it can't be done. If our heroine truly were as vain as she appears to be, she would not wreck her good looks just for an award. Indeed, for most the response to being denied an award because of our sex is most likely indignation and outrage rather than concocting some outlandish plot to "show 'em what I'm really made of". All that being said, this is a delicious comedy. Those that complain that Joyce Heiser can't cut it as a "male" miss the point. If Heiser were any more convincing as a male half the humor would fall flat and we would run the risk of turning into just another piece of feminist party line storytelling. Instead we find Heiser discovering that while she had been treated unfairly she was a frivolous person. The insight she gains in seeing the world from another viewpoint matures her and leads her to find love where she never would have looked. Moreover, while she triumphs and proves her point, Heiser comes to find out that she isn't the only one who can be hurt by other people. Her entire plot was cruel to the person she learned to care about most during her adventure. But this analysis while true also misleads. The seriousness of Just One Of The Guys is vastly overwhelmed by the girl-in-disguise comedy this movie plays so well. The story does take place in the 1980's we have all come to hate so much; but the story excels over these trappings.

Rating: Summary: Great flick must see comedy film. Review: This movie was one of my favorites. She does the one thing she has to do to become a noticed writer. Which was being a guy!!! Before she was a portrayed as a male, everyone assumed she was nothing but all good looks and no brains. She proves them all to be wrong when she comes up with greatest article in the end. A must see for 80's movie fans.
Rating: Summary: Can You Put a Price on Dignity? Review: This is the question I constantly ask myself while watching this masterpiece. Rick Morehouse, played by the legendary Clayton Rohner, commands respect when on screen. Rick is a true James Brown enthusiast who feels an impulsive need to dance like a fruit anytime he hears the Godfather of Soul. This movie really has so much to offer but the dignified performance given by Clayton Rohner is what truly captivates me and steals my heart, my mind, and my tears. A true epic. To not buy this movie would be a disservice to you, your family, and the American film industry. Thank you Clayton Rohner. You give me hope, strength, and most of all dignity.
Rating: Summary: Oh, sister of my loins.... Review: I love 80's teen movies. They are my guilty pleasure, plus takes me back to a time when I was a teenager. 80's teen movies are the best because they were fun, goofy and funny, not the angry, brooding, violent teen junk of today. This is one of the best!
