Rating: Summary: Truly a classic!!! Review: I don't know if I'd compare this movie to The Breakfast Club, which inadvertantly ushered in the era of teen angst. Instead, I would put this next to Ferris Bueller or Can't Buy Me Love. It's definitely a more light-hearted film.
The real distinction is the creative approach. It's the same kind of quirky stylistic innovation that made Raising Arizona so unique (this film is nothing like Raising Arizona...). Phil Joanou (Director) makes the cinematography a character in and of itself. No matter how well-written/acted, this movie would have been just another forgettable 80's teen-flick, without the quick pans, fast dollys, and overall visual texture of the film.
Buy it. It'll end up in your DVD tray more than you would expect.
Rating: Summary: Mike's Review Review: I have quite a few family members and friends as stand ins in this movie. My brother is big as life standing right next to Jerry Mitchell's friend (guy in flannel shirt, don't remember his name) who stands up for him against Buddy Revel. It was fun to watch a movie filmed right here in my home town Ogden Utah, even though it was filmed at my rival high school, Ogden High. I went to Ben Lomond High School. I rated the movie a 5, mostly because of all the familiar faces in the movie. It was fun to see family and friends in a Hollywood motion picture. But, I felt the movie had a good plot as well. I'm not a critic, don't know what to really write, so only thing I can say is that I liked the movie.
Rating: Summary: brilliant Review: i havent seen this film since i was 13yrs old, but i have never forgoten it, this film was brilliant!@ > @

Rating: Summary: Oh those zany 80's Review: I remember seeing this in 1987 at the theater. It was kind of embarrassing because there were like only ten people in there. If you're looking for the zaniness of Ferris Bueller, this is right up your alley. Jerry Mitchell has to fight a school bully at three o'clock. He tries to pay off a huge jock to protect him, which ends up being film history's largest domino demonstration. He tries to get detention, but just ends up turning on his English teacher. Throw in a bratty little sister, a new age girlfriend, the 'perfect girl' and a nerd sidekick, and you got yourself an hour and a half of decent entertainment. Hey we all had those butterflies in our stomach when we knew we had a fight set for after school, it's all apart of growing up. It just sucked when it happened first thing in the morning, so you had to dwell on it all day. So there's a little Jerry in all of us. Of course those were the 80's. For those too young to remember, teenagers would settle their differences with their fists, not guns. Hard to believe but it's true. Notice how at the end of the movie, the whole school looks like the Roman Collusium or a scene out of Mad Max. Outrageous.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest "unknown" films of of the 80's! Review: I saw this film in the theaters when I was a teen and loved it! And when I got the chance to buy it, although at the time cost a pretty penny, it was worth it and I bought it on the spot! This is the funniest movie of that time period and yet never got the acclaim and popularity (that it deserved) that other films during that time got. This movie is unpredictable and never falls into cliches. It used comedy, anxiety and excitement to perfection. The story, cinemetography and direction was very creative and unlike any movie at that time. And the subtle metaphors in the movie, added to the comic genius and the main characters anxiety, especially the scene where the main character is watching the film in class and he watches the little insect get eaten by its predetor! This movie had one suprise after another. It includes the tesion and fear from horror movies and thrillers, the wit, sarcasm and slapstick from comedies, and the tesion and creativity in the camera work and each individual scene that was popular in old westerns... and all this in the backdrop of an 80's teen genre that excels by deviating form the norm. The actors are perfect in this movie, especially verteren actors Casey Siemaszko, (Back to the Future, Young Guns) and Richard Tyson, (Kindergarten Cop, There's Something About Mary) in his movie debut, who captures the intense Terminatoresque role of the bully that will not give up his mission to destroy to fearful perfection. This movie deserves 6 stars!!
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN!!! Review: I saw this movie when I was about thirteen years old. It's one of the most memorable movies you could ever see. The characterization, the actors, the storyline, EVERYthing is perfect. If this movie were [expensive] on VHS...I'd STILL buy it. I won't tell you anything about the movie because it spoils it. I mean, come on if you know the plot there is no element of surprise. This one is a winner!!! Ron
Rating: Summary: Underated tale of high school angst Review: I think that the most important aspect of the film is that we shouldn't necessarily believe the ideas that are spoon fed to us all our lives but particuarly during those crucial yet termendously uncertain high school years. Not to mention the rest of our lives in general. Jerry, throughout the film comes to realize much about himself, his classmates, teachers, bullies, and the objects of his affection and how positive it is to challenge one's own assumptions and begin to see people for what they truly are. There is tremendous power in courage and objectivity. But forget about all that... The film is just plain funny and will really take you back to your high school years and all the uncertainty that came along with them. Casey Siemaszko was perfect for the role. The films director, Phil Janou, essentially shot the film as a series of still photographs that had dialogue thrown in. That was perfect because to me that's how much of high school seemed. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Great Cast, loved the camera angles Review: I've read the Leonard Maltin review and disagree with his assessment of Casey as the leasd charecter. He was supposed to be less than inspiring. The fact that this kid, who in any other situtaion would be as about as interesting as a rock, is thrown into a situtaion like fighting the BIGGEST kid ever, is what makes the movie funny. The reactions of the other students to the situation really plays the whole story up. I'm getting this on DVD as soon as it's available. I wish I could get it now.
Rating: Summary: Underated 80's Classic finally comes to DVD Review: I've waited a long time for this movie to be released on DVD. It languished way too long in the overpriced retail rental VHS format. Though the DVD is bear bones; no extra scenes, no commentary, not even the obligatory paper insert with the scene list(!?); it's still a must have for any fan of 80's teen movies. Casey Siemaszko is excellent! The "Book Report" scene and the song "Something to Remember Me By" both help make up for the DVD's lack of extras. The quirky camera zooms & angles, plus quotes like "Your face looks like non-fat milk." are the cherry on top. My other favorite thing about the film is that I get to remember what real 80's fashion and hair looked like from all the background student extras. Not some Hollywood stylist's interpertation. Gawd... did we really wear all those horrid colors with those fluffy poodle cuts??? Sheesh!
