Summary: Real Fun
Review: Real Genius is a funny mid 80's teen movie. It takes place at a California college where a group of exceptional students are working a laser beam. It appears to be purely for science, but ends up being part of secret government weapon. Val Kilmer stars as Chris Knight the top student and genius. Instead of being a geek, he is flip and off the wall. Mr. Kilmer gives an affable and likable performance. William Atherton plays yet another heavy and young Gabe Jarret gives a solid performance as a teenage genius and Mr. Kilmer's sidekick. The film is fun, but a paper thin plot holds it back.

Review: I really liked this movie starring Val Kilmer. I liked the characters in the movie most of all because they were mostly all likeable except for the evil guy. The story is he created a machine that can penetrate through basically anything and the teacher who is evil takes it to the government. My favorite part is when the beam hits his house and the huge thing of popcorn explodes in his house. I recommend this movie for the 1980sness to it.

Summary: A Classic!
Review: What can I say? This is a classic movie, lots of fun and actually very believable with the technology used. If you are (or ever were) a budding science geek, this is for you!The DVD is double sided, with widescreen and cropped versions of the movie. A few trailers of other films and scene index - pretty basic. No extra interviews or other goodies. I've been waiting for this DVD for some time, and I'm glad that I finally have it.

Summary: Great to see some fun for Kilmer
Review: This was one of the first Val Kilmer films I have seen, and in my opinion, a diamond in the rough. It was surprising to see Kilmer not taking himself so seriously as he does in films now. At times it gets a little "high-horse" for it's own good (especially in the last 20 minutes), but the rest of the film is both fun and elightening. Nerds of the world unite!

Summary: One of my all time favorite 80s movies
Review: I was excited to see that his movie was finally released on DVD. Definitely an 80's classic. It was interesting to see Val Kilmer play a whimsical role (although prior to this movie he was relatively unknown) You'll laugh, you'll cry...okay, you'll mostly laugh. And okay, the plot is not that great, the special effects are virtually nonexistent, but the atmosphere of the film is one you can't help but laugh at. Who can forget Lazlo the guy in the closet, the girl that never sleeps, and one of the funniest parts, the call from "God" to Kent. Good soundtrack to this film too. A must for your 80's film collection. =)

Summary: An Overlooked Comedy Classic
Review: Cable television has given a second chance to many a movie neglected at the box office. "Real Genius" is a prime example of this. When released in 1985, it was buried by two other sci-fi comedies also released that summer: "My Science Project" and "Weird Science." I remember one movie critic calling that summer the summer of "My real genius weird science project." Also to the film's detriment was the fact that it boasted no established stars (Kilmer had not yet made his mark). The result was that it came and went away rather quickly. It wasn't until it debuted on cable that people caught on to what a funny and engrossing film it was. Wiliam Atherton, fresh from his great heel performance as the EPA official in "Ghostbusters," plays Jerome Hathaway, a media-renowned physicist who collects prodigies like others collect baseball cards. The reason: to build a laser weapon he is developing in conjunction with a the CIA. The kids build the laser and he collects the monies, most of which comes under the table. To his consternation, the CIA has bumped up the delivery date for the weapon and he must get his students to work harder and faster. His problem is that his lead prodigy, Chirs Knight (Val Kilmer) is having a crisis of mission in life. Once believing in nothing else than his studies and work, he has come to a change of mind. Worse yet for Dr. Hathaway, the young genius he has recently recruited, 15-year old Mitch Taylor (Gabe Jarrett) is rooming with Knight and is picking up his philosophy of life. Taylor learns that the reason for Knight's change of mind has come from Holyfeld, an ex-student who lives in the steam rooms below campus, to which the only entrance is through Chris and Mitch's closet...Yes, it's a thin plot, and yes, they do build Hathaway's pet project, but we get so caught up in the characters that we lose track of the plot because we're too busy laughing. No DVD collection can be complete without this gem of a comedy, a comedy that can be viewed multiple times -- the rule for good comedies.

Summary: Great movie, ungenius DVD
Review: This is absolutley one of my Top ten favorite films. It always has been. Unfortunatley, you'll notice right away how unclever this DVD really is. It lacks the luster that comes with new releases, (ie. Animated DVD menu, bonuses... of ANY kind?!) In fact, the only special feature that comes with this DVD are Trailers.. but there's one for "Hook," and one for "Jumanji." Not even a "Real Genius" trailer. Shame on you Columbia / Tristar. This disk Clearly looks like it was produced several years ago, only to be released now. Other than that, It's grea to finally have this Gem on disk, and in widescreen. Now, If we could only coax them into releasing the soundtrack.

Summary: Real Genius
Review: I am of the 60's generation, and this one just fits right in. Val Kilmer young but very likeable is great as the wise one. I have been waiting for this one to come out on DVD, I own the VHS version also. Have been a fan even with Top Secret, but this one is my favorite. The pranks they pull at colleges has not changed in years, and the reality of our government and how things are discovered are still true today. Great easy watching and love for popcorn.....
