Rating: Summary: Mind kandy Review: One of the best independent pictures I have ever seen. Gummo is ALIVE. Most people don't like this movie -in my opinion those people are oblivious to whats going on around them.If after the movie you look around at your friends and say "I don't get it." Then you never will.
Rating: Summary: what abunch of soft nerdy people you all are! Review: this movie, has no plot. has no deep meaning. and why do i like it? cause its funny. like dude said below its a mockery of everyday society and thats about it. i didn't find it shocking and i didn't think the film was trying to shock me either. if you where shocked by this or offened you are a nerdy weak person, its so obvious you are deeply offended by this film, so shutup. say i have no taste? who cares.
Rating: Summary: You either love it, or you don't. Review: Truely ahead of its time. Not much plot developement, and I think thats why most of the critics dislike this film, they just don't see how above it is. If you like kids then chances are you will like this movie.
Rating: Summary: most are missing the point Review: This is a truly amazing film. Those whose main criticism focuses on the "lack of plot" or overall grossness of the characters are not worthy of recognition. We and Mr. Korine can leave them to their Penny Marshall, Reiner and Speilberg drivel/nonsense. This film is a collection of disturbingly creepy images that are utilized less for mere shock value than as a means of getting 20th century americans (and anyone else who cares) to look at their culture/selves and the degree to which they have had their consciousness manipulated by media. We live in a society permeated with media: particularly that which focuses on pretty, adolescent celebrities (see e.g. the recent glut of tv dramas about disgustingly cute teens and post-teens). Gummo gives us an antidote to all of this unreality in the nature of: dirt, cat killing, ugliness, mental retardation. What could be more real than the image of a girl with down syndrome dancing mindlessly in her front yard? Certainly not images of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Neve Campbell. Watch this film for a dose of strange, vibrant and disconcerting reality behind the bs of media.
Rating: Summary: Stinker Review: Whew. I though I liked weird movies until I saw this junk. You've got to really be so completely opened minded to enjoy this film that your brains fall out. Want to see an "art" film that makes no sense? Then watch any David Lynch film. At least with Lynch at the helm you can feel the talent behind the camera. Not with Gummo, though. This is junk posing as art. It's a wonder so many have been suckered into to believing this crap has any deep meaning or significance.
Rating: Summary: above reviewing Review: This movie isnt meant to be reviewed because each and every person will have a different opinion. Its not the type of film, that if someone says "great film", you'll agree, its not "Good Will Hunting". This isnt your normal 90 minute piece of trash. This is a new fresh film that wants to challenge you. You may or may not like it, my opinion, Roger Ebert's opinion doesnt matter. Youre going to decide for yourself while watching it. But, if you want to see a new style of film, and have an open mind, you're more likely to enjoy it...
Rating: Summary: sorry, white trash is not a freak show Review: uh, i used to be white trash, and i lived in a trailer park. that was where i grew up, and unlike this movie might suggest, most of the people TRY to act normal, even people who are white trash. Most people would rather fit the image of the "norm". I would not recommend this movie. It made me feel dirty and ill.
Rating: Summary: They couldn't have been acting... Review: Add Xenia, Ohio to the list of towns I'll never visit. If you'd like to be disturbed, get this movie. Three stars for shock value alone. It's no "Kids", but 10x as warped.
Rating: Summary: Mock of everyday life Review: I see everyone talking about how there is no plot to this movie, but I don't really agree. I really look at this movie as a mock of popular society. The kid with ADD is a poster boy for a warped Nike comercial, if he were Michael Jordan jumping over a net in slow motion, it would win commercial of the year. Women trying to make their nipples bigger (implants), selling cat's for food (old urban legand), kids ripping off charatable foundations (girl scouts), working out with spoons (no steriods here), prostitution your wife (whatever). It's all just a mock of what we as normal american citizens do EVERY DAY! Watch this movie as an a compelling look into your own everyday life and what the media has done to society. It's no Casablanca but it sure is real.
Rating: Summary: Science fiction or fact? Review: A terrifying and hilarious vision of the future. If you have lost faith in cinema please go see this movie. Forget all the claims that this movie has no plot. If you want plot, go see some crappy Ron Howard movie. This film is absolutely brilliant. It makes you want to grab a camera and make your own film. If you have a sense of humour and do not need the director to hold your hand and explain the movie to you, this is your film. Gummo is a triumphant science fiction and documentary film. This movie will forever change your expectations of what a film should be and you will never be satisfied again. This film is a turning point in American cinema, we can only hope it will change everything.
