Rating: Summary: Brainless but "Excellent!" Party On, Dude! Review: I woke up one morning with a bout of 80's nostalgia, and something in the visual department, plus as a burned out, disgruntled now-hesitant history major--I don't whether I'm going to go through with it-- so I gave this a looksee, more or less expecting something brainless. And it was, but at least fun and good-natured, all due to the fun performances by Alex Winter (Bill Preston) and Keanu Reeves, who'll probably go through life being remembered as Ted rather than Neo. At least by me, anyway. And those air guitar bites add attitude to this film.Having a final oral history presentation as their last chance to get an A in history, Bill and Ted, get some help from their future. It seems that as the rock duo Wyld Stallions, they are the legendary icons of San Dimas in the far future, and a guy named Rufus, played with laconic cool by George Carlin, provide them with a time machine that resembles a phone booth to travel in time, complete with a white and yellow pages directory. Napoleon ("the short dead dude"), Billy The Kid, Socrates,("he's under So-crates"), Genghis Khan, Joan of Arc, Ludwig van Beethoven, Abraham Lincoln, and Sigmund Freud are the personalities they ensnare in their time machine. As this is a goofball comedy, don't take any continuity errors to heart, i.e. dates relating to Genghis Khan. However, for sheer fun at a typical mall, Beethoven, Genghis Khan, and Joan of Arc have the best moments, but that's nothing compared to what Napoleon goes through. After a few semesters of nose-to-the-grindstone, I was actually glad to see some historical figures get a drubbing. No doubt some clever guy in the story department looked into Doctor Who in the concept of using a booth as a time machine. The circuits of time, spaghetti-like strands of tunnels, replaces the time-space vortex or hyperspace one usually reads or hears about in traditional sci-fi works. Apart from the two stars, Dan Shor (Billy the Kid), Tony Steedman (Socrates), and Amy Stock-Poynton (Missy) stand out, especially the latter as Bill's hot stepmom who's probably only a few years older than B&T. And there are four prominent 80's rock/pop stars in this movie. Ex-Go-Go Jane Wiedlin is Joan of Arc, "as in Noah's wife" and the Three Most Important People In The World in the futuristic San Dimas are Clarence Clemons, sax player for the E Street Band, the man Bruce Springsteen called the King of the Night and the Master of Disaster, Martha Davis of the Motels, and Fee Waybill of the Tubes. Quality artists or what? The soundtrack of upbeat party rock adds to the attitude of this movie. Brainless but good-natured fun is the way I'd describe this comedy, which says a lot, as I would never have been caught dead seeing this during my uptight high school days. This is one case of age and nostalgia mellowing me. Oh yes, and don't forget the princesses, especially the brunette--they are worth remembering.
Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: How could you not? I know some people don't get the humor in this movie, but I think it's one of the funniest movies of the 80's. :) The sequel on the other hand... well, let's not go there. I only give it 4 stars in this review though, because the DVD has absolutely nothing special on it. The trailer, that's about it. I would have loved to see some special features, even commentary from the actors. Something! Either way, totally awesome movie, sub-par DVD. Still worth buying - especially at the price on amazon.com!
Rating: Summary: TOTALLY AWESOME DUDE!!! Review: This movie was totally cool and funny. If you want a movie with laughs, good time humor, and stupid fun you'll love it!! Bill and Ted are hilarious!! Double the laughs!
Rating: Summary: "Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K." Review: Considered to be one of the best comedies of all time, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure starts with Rufus (George Carlin) telling us about the year 2688, where he lives, and about the great ones, who ran into a bit of trouble before becoming the great ones, so he plans to go back in time to give them a hand. In 1988, Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are trying to set up their band, the Wyld Stallyns. Yes, they are the great ones, despite the noticeable lack of IQ. (They think that Caesar is, and I quote, "A salad dressing dude.") They are in danger of failing history, and worse, Ted is in danger of this and being sent of to Colonel Oates' Military Academy by his dad (Hal Landon Jr.) if he doesn't pass. All is lost until Rufus shows up with the booth, and Bill and Ted begin their adventure to pass history. Their plan is to gather as many historical figures as possible, including Billy The Kid, Socrates, Abe Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, and Beethoven, for their history report. The highligh has to be when they bring the figures home with them, where they wreak havoc on the San Dimas mall. Good performances all around, especially the leads. The DVD boasts good image and sound quality, but nobody cares unless they own a home theater system and waste money on "Superbit" DVD's that have no extras (With a few exceptions, like Hollow Man, Charlie's Angels, etc.). The main thing is the extras, on which MGM fails to deliver. The only thing is a trailer, which is qyuite amusing, but fails to warrant any recomendation. Snap it up if it is your local bargain bin, or if you just want a copy that will never wear out after repeated viewing. You can do better, MGM. Rating: Summary: Party On Dude! Review: Ever wonder what it would be like to travel through time? Well, what it one day, YOU were traveling through time, who or what would you want to see? Well this movie, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is all about time travel and meeting historic people. The movie starts out in the year 2688 with Rufus (George Carlin) talking about the two great ones, Bill and Ted, about how they ran into some problems before they became gods of rock and roll. So Rufus is planning to travel back through time to help them out. Here we are. In a garage with Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves), two guys who have their own band, Wyld Stallyns, who can't play anything. Bill is the one with some brains and Ted is the idiot of the duo. The two go to school and find out that they are going to flunk History class if they don't get a A+ on their next report about historical people throughout several periods of time. So they are at a shopping store studying and Rufus shows up in a time-traveling telephone booth. Now they can go back in time and actually take these historical people to the present to help them do their report that they have to present in front of the whole school. First, Rufus shows them how to travel through time by bringing them to Austria in the year 1805 with the French led by Napoleon invading the country. As the boys leave, Napolean is caught in a explosion that makes him land on top of the telephone booth and travels through time with them to the present. There is their first guy. Then the boys set out on their own. Here is where they decide to go. First, the go to New Mexico is the late 1800's out in the old west where they take Billy the Kid. The they go to Athens, Greece in B.C time where their next man is Socrates. Then they go to Germany where they end up taking Beethoven. See who else they take with them. Will they get that A+ on their report or will they flunk school? This movie is a good teen movie. Especially for anyone who likes time travel.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: This is the totally most excellent ever made! Whenever I get down, this is the movie I watch. And it's also educational. This is what they should be showing in schools, not those boring documentaries, but then again, that's just my personal opinion.
Rating: Summary: Fun movie but the DVD could be better. Review: I really enjoy this movie, but the 3 stars are for what the DVD has to offer. All you can do is set captions, watch the trailor and the movie. That's all? Overall this is a great movie... just for kicks of course!
Rating: Summary: Partying through Time to Pass History? Review: After the success of BACK TO THE FUTURE, a slew of movies about time travel were produced and released. None have ever reached the level of excitement and humor yet without breaking continuity with time travel theory than that film did. Some of the films made were decent, some were terrible, and some were just incredibly funny. BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE was one the funniest time travel films and was a huge hit. Bill and Ted are two California high school losers who can't even play instruments but have a band called "Wyld Stallions" (Bill and Ted introduced air guitar to the rest of America outside of LA). The duo want to learn to play and stuff, but they have to graduate from high school and in order to do that they have to get an A+ on their history final. Enter Rufus (George Carlin). Rufus is from the future, a future where peace reigns thanks to the music of Bill and Ted. However, if they don't pass that final, all of Rufus' society will be wiped into oblivion. So, he let's the bumbling duo borrow his time traveling phone booth (anybody seen Doctor Who) and travel throughout history picking up famous people to help them with their report. Abe Lincoln, Sigmund Freud, Genghis Khan, Joan of Arc, Billy the Kid, Beethoven, and Napolean are all along for the ride. But while Bill and Ted have to find Napolean (ditched by his babysitter) the men and woman of history run wild in the mall and are arrested. The movie is hilarious. True it is totally anachronistic and doesn't follow time travel theory at all, but because it never takes itself seriously, one can relish in the humor. The movie haunted Keanu Reeves' career and the surfer in the actor never left him until he made THE MATRIX. And the rest is, as they say, history.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious All-Time Classic Review: Here's a whoppin' good adventure comedy that succeeds bedause it so unabashedly pushes the limits and risks absurdity. A couple of high school students are so clueless that when asked who Joan of Arc was, one replies "Noah's wife?". But this title pair are about to embark on a life-changing adventure! Suddenly they meet a strange dude with a telephone booth altered into a time-machine! What a concept of how to build a time-machine! I wondered if they thought about how we're living in a time when phone booths have become a rarity? How it won't be long, if things continue on their present course, until you couldn't make a time-machine out of a phone booth until you first used another time-machine to go back in time and get a phone booth? Well it's an interesting twist, whether intentional or not! Once back in time, the title characters transport several historical figures to the present, and thereby change their world. One of those figures is the very Joan of Arc they shortly before didn't know from Noah's wife! I found it most uncanny what historical figures they were able to bring back to the present, including no less that three that were me in former lives! They got it pretty right about Genghis Khan! I'm sure I would really really have liked twinkies when I was he! The part about Billy-the-kid they stretch a bit, even addressing him as "Mr. the Kid". Now no one really ever addressed me that way in my former life as Billy-the-Kid, but what a neat concept! Now some things of the present get streched just a bit too. For example, Bill and Ted get themselves out of one bind by use of a programmable audio tape player, programming it to play a certain message on the following afternoon. Now who's ever heard of that? Time-machines have become a familiar thing, at least in movies. But programmable audio tape players? Not even any video recorder that I know of can be programmed to play at a certain time; programming applies only to recording. Much less have I even imagined an audio tape machine programmable as to either recording or playing. So the movie does employ a few unrealistic devices. But it employs them most cleverly and hilariously!
