Review: John Hughes is the master. There is no equal. He is truly in touch with the teenager inside, and let's face it, folks... that teenager still exists within us all. The teenager that STILL wishes he could get the beautiful, popular girl. The teenager that so desparately wants acceptance. The teenager that cries out for justice against the Clinque Nation. I disagree with viewers who say that Pretty in Pink should have had this ending. Pah! I say. Pretty in Pink was a different film and Ducky and Molly Ringwald had no freaking chemistry! She and Andrew McCarthy were to end up together. She had no hidden feelings for Ducky... Be serious. Also, I take issue with the reviewer who states that Hughes was targeting a narcissistic market... White suburbia who wanted to see themselves star in a morality play. Hello, buddy. Welcome to reality... The majority of America's teenagers ARE white suburbia in a morality play. Hughes was RECOGNIZING a market. At any rate, This movie... Some Kind of Wonderful was nicely done. Well played by its actors; nice storyline. Just a solid film.

Summary: Great classic comedy about teen angst!
Review: But something strange about the DVD. The video is really soft. The picture is like it's been through a haze/fog filter. Not quite as bad as VHS but not as good as most DVDs. The colors are all washed out. It's not horrible but is disappointing for such a classic film. I'd give the movie 4 stars & the DVD 3 stars. But I have to round up because of the rating system here. It's a C+ disc.

Review: Not my favorite out of the whole 80's teenage comedy/Drama but a good movie all the same! This has the ending Pretty in Pink should have had I completely agree!

Review: In many ways, "Some Kind of Wonderful" is yet another John Hughes re-tread of white teen angst in 1980s America. There's no doubt that Hughes was a marketing genius, in that he tapped into what his narcissistic market--white suburbia--wanted so hungrily to see, which was itself as the star of little morality plays with cool soundtracks and hipster clothes. Certainly, this movie provides all that. On the other hand, "Some Kind of Wonderful" manages to do what other lesser-known Hughes productions do not: create a story that is still universal and affecting, even after all these years. Much of the credit goes to the two leads, Eric Stolz and Mary Stuart Masterson, who each give understated and honest performances that are far more moving than their stereotypical characters generally deserve. More sincere than the manipulative "Pretty in Pink," more thoughtful than the mega-hit "The Breakfast Club," and more meaningful than the fluffy "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Some Kind of Wonderful" suffers mostly from bad timing--had it premiered a few years before Hughes had saturated the market with his cookie-cutter productions, it probably would have been a far bigger hit. As it stands, this story of a genuinely nice kid chasing the wrong girl--with the conflicted help of the right girl, who loves him--rises above the standard plasticky fare of the period; you're truly moved by the end of the movie, rooting for its leads to find the love they undoubtedly deserve. Even if it borrows from "Cyrano De Bergerac" and a host of other works--and pretends that minorities only exist as background extras in some other movie--"Some Kind of Wonderful" stands on its own, perhaps because director Howard Deutch adds just a tinge of sadness to so many scenes, even the comic ones. Here, young love is not about passing notes, holding hands, and making out; it's about actual human relationships, good and bad.

Summary: Some Kind of Wonderful Film!
Review: Like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful treated its teenaged characters like real people with real feelings, hopes, fears, and desire. That is very rare these days when you have films like American Pie and Not Another Teen Movie out there. This is FAR FAR FAR SUPERIOR to those worthless [movies]. (Okay American Pie was funny though) This is a great film would good acting and a great story. It is also something that one can relate to. We've all had a secret crush on someone at some point in our lives, and 90% of us were the outcasts. This film will appeal to all people, not those just looking for great films. I'd recommend buying or renting today!

Summary: I love this cult film but I'm very disappointed
Review: I love this cult film but I was very disappointed to realize that the original French version disappeared. I'm so upset because I was waiting for this release with impatient and the result is a crappy French version. The first French version was very faithfull to the film because Watts is Watts but here, Watts is called "Sharleen". It's very stupid and the new dialogues are not so strong in style and humour. To sum up, it's a good film but I hate the new French version very bad in the DVD

Summary: Great movie, but...
Review: This is one of the best of the teen movies of the 80's, right up there with The Last American Virgin, which is long overdue for the DVD treatment, or at least a re-release on VHS, because its impossible to find and if you do, be prepared to shell out the big bucks, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Say Anything, which was probably the very last great teen movie made of the 80's. All of these movies are realistic and not sappy and corny and typical. However, my problem with this movie is this. Are we really supposed to believe that Eric Stoltz is this "dog" that's totally undatable and a freak? Come on. I know if he would have went to my high school, I can't even begin to count all the girls would have drooled over him. He's excellent in the role, but just kind of hard to believe lookswise. Other than that, a great movie. And like someone else said, I'm kind of disapointed by the lack of extras on the DVD but I wouldn't let that stop you from buying it if you're a diehard fan of this movie.

Summary: Now this is GREAT cinema!
Review: This is one of the greatest movies ever made! It is very well acted and the characters are likable and believeable. They show teenagers as real people and not just sex crazed maniacs. This is right up there with Say Anything, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. If you have good taste, I suggest picking this masterpiece up in any way that is possible. Believe me it is worth your money. It is one of my favorite movies, and I'm sure it'll become one of yours as well. Hope you enjoy it.

Summary: Masterson steals it ! ! !
Review: Cute in the sense that it rises above most teen-angst films of the era. Boy likes girl, girl doesn't know he exists but his best friend adores him. Mary Stuart Masterson was the right pick for the character of Watts. Notice the kiss scene: Masterson exhibits the perfect balance of nervous tension and school girl charm, holding back and striking at the right moment. Mary, you should have gotten tons of work after this performance but I think you were typecasted. At least we still have this film to cherish. The Paramount DVD is nearly worthless; sporting only a crispy widescreen transfer without a commentary or any other extras. That's too bad.
