Rating: Summary: A Couple of Funny Nuggets Review: I was sooo disappointed seeing Notorious. Margaret Cho's other work is sooo funny. Most of this film, however, seems forced and unpolished. She is so busy trying to wrap her humor around politically incorrect material, that she doesn't bother to cut the parts that aren't funny - which unfortunately is most of it. The part where she is imitating gay men blocking out her jokes about straight people is funny. Mommy in Israel, at the very end, is probably the best part. Most of it, though, is just nasty comedy about her sexcapades with both genders, in gross detail. Not only do you feel sorry for her putting on this unpolished and not ready performance, but her confessions about all that she has done makes you feel sad for her life as well.I don't mind politically incorrect humor. I definetely don't mind humorist taking pot shots at the political scene. But it must be funny first! This wasn't funny at all. I really hope that Margaret Cho outgrows these nasty bits of humor and gets back to work on some real material. She has talent, now she needs to start using it.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING! BRILLIANT! HILARIOUS! Review: Once again Margaret proves why she is the queen of the stage. Outrageously funny, this DVD will keep you laughing. Not missing a chance to be political, Cho discusses societal issues including racism, homophobia, sexism and self image but keeps us laughing during the process. Check it out!!!
Rating: Summary: Notorious NO!!! Review: This DVD was exceptionally disappointing. Unlike the brilliant standup of Pryor and other influences, Cho beats one over the head with the fact that she is an Asian, Rubenesque woman. This is not necessary with real humor. Pryor, like other brilliant comedians who are minorities, recount their experiences, but do not get polemical (Yes, Maggie, we know you are overweight, tell us about your experiences, don't just observe you are discriminated against). This shows a comedian of lesser talent who has to resort to obvious observations. True comedians use descriptions, not banal statements like "I am Asian American and fat". Also, sexual humor is fine and is amusing when relevant. Just getting gynecological is not funny, it is snore inducing. That is why Andrew Dice Clay had 15 seconds and Richard Pryor still lives on. I was particularly annoyed by her pandering to the gay audience at her show. It is rather tedious to hear "Gay men are fabulous". Again, description of your experiences with gay men would be much more entertaining than these comments that are very patronizing. A truly awful performance by a pseudo comedian and "diva". Maybe her other performances are better, but I see little talent or spark on this DVD. Save your time.
Rating: Summary: I should have read the other reviews Review: I bought this DVD because it was supposed to be cutting edge political and racial humor. I should have paid more attention to the reviews that said it was disappointing. To make the comparison to Richard Pryor is what offends me. Richard, like Robin Williams are comedy icons. Richard influenced a whole generation of comics from Eddie Murphy to Chris Rock. Cho is not even close. I didn't laugh at any of the jokes which are targeted away from the audience that who love Richard Pryor or the Kings of Comedy. This is the amateur hour. Not as good as Roseanne Barr or a host of other female comics. Trying to use the hip-hop references is another marketing ploy. No one in the Hood would find this material funny. I agree with those who have said this is contrived and forced. All hype , no substance. I should have read the customer reviews before I bought it.
Rating: Summary: Very Funny! Review: I always thought that Margaret Cho was very funny and in this movie (stand-up comedie) she is great but it got some down momments and a bit boring one but they not too long, just one or two jokes were kind of boring and kind of too much, so you have to be pretty open mind to enjoy most of her jokes. Some very funny parts was when she talked about her drags queens friends, her parents, especially her mother, her problem with food, that when her brother and her were young they were chubby and have to go into a speacial treatement diet, when she talked about her very nice boyfriend who bring her gifts and the best part is around the end, her speach about self-esteem and it is pretty powerful. I think she so right about that. I think you should rent it or buy it especially if you like her you would think she's great!
Rating: Summary: "I'm the one I want" is much better Review: I love Margaret Cho, and as a fellow Asian-American love the fact that she is as successful as she is. HOWEVER...I have to be honest, this performance was disappointing compared with her first film, "I'm the one I want." Unlike her debut, the laughs here often seem forced, the jokes often sound rehashed, genuine side-splitters were few and far in between; I couldn't help feeling that maybe she's running low on material and just had to put out this film in order to fulfill some contractual agreement. Putting her parents on camera in the beginning of the program was kind of cute I suppose, but of very low comedic value. In this film she delves more into straight confessional that drearily turns into self-help bathos, self-pity and self-congratulation, making you almost feel embarassed FOR her especially at the end. And there perhaps is the crux of the problem: from the footage of people waiting in line to get into the place where she performs and raving about her, to her parents saying how proud they are of her, to the people leaving the venue and raving about her: this film seems to be centered more around Margaret Cho being oh-so-cool rather than Margaret Cho's actual stand-up act, which in her first film WAS absolutely hilarious.
Rating: Summary: I think she's great... however... Review: Kind of a disappointing followup to the brilliant and seamless "I'm The One That I Want." Shot on video instead of film and with a less focused routine, this is a decent counterculture comedy concert in the transgressive Richard Pryor tradition, but doesn't reveal as much of Cho's profound human depth as she allowed us to see before. The growing subplot of her parent's parallel fame is kind of amusing: maybe it's time for Cho to start riffing on her father as well as her mom; his brief backstage interview was kind of intriguing. Cho is one of our generations most gifted and insightful comedians, but this seemed like she was treading water.
Rating: Summary: Margaret is still the master of her domain! Review: This DVD is great! She revisits some funny aspects of "I'm the one That I Want", in addition to hilarious new material. As always, there is just a little bit of poking fun at her mother...but just a little bit. Her mix of comedy and story telling is a refreshing reprive from the toils of everyday life. And I will never look at Haagen Das Ice Cream the same way again!
Rating: Summary: Notoriously Amazingly Review: There is no doubt about it: Margaret Cho definitely speaks her mind. Nothing is taboo, no topic is off-limits. With her wonderful candor, a spark of comedy runs through her routine that is fresh, honest, and funny. She leaves no stone unturned, no controversial thought untouched. Definitely not for the feint of heart, this is cutting edge comedy at its best. However, while the comedy is funny, Cho delivers a tour de force ending that is some of the most beautiful poetry spoken on film. She directly challenges anyone who considers themselves a minority to break out of the bonds our society has clamped to our feet, and defy them by the greatest act of revolution: daring to have self-esteem. Her words were so powerful I even wrote them down: "For us, to have self-esteem is truly an act of revolution. And our revolution is long overdue. I urge you today ,especially today in these times of terrorism and chaos, to love yourselves without reservation, and to love each other without restraint." Thank you, Margaret Cho, for leading the charge, for not buckling under pressure, for giving us the power of your talented insights, for being a leader of a vision of tomorrow.
Rating: Summary: Margaret Returns! Review: Margaret Cho is one of my favorite comediennes, if not THE favorite. I bought her last concert, "I'm the One That I Want", on dvd and it a laugh a minute. This concert is not as good as the one but it is still worth every penny. Margaret again covers two of my favorite subjects, sexuality and her mom (I think she could do a whole concert on mom alone!) I'm hooked on Margaret and anytime she has a new project, I'm there. If you want a really good laugh, buy this dvd and pop it in. Invite friends over, order a pizza, open a bottle of wine and prepare to be entertained. The dvd includes the animated short from the theater version as well as a few other goodies---interview with her parents. A good dvd to add to your comedy collection.
