Rating: Summary: Buy This and Bust a Gut Review: I watched this over the weekend and was blown away at how funny it was. Truly an enjoyable show to watch again and again. Not just a bunch of jokes which will become stale as time goes on but rather a difficult and funny journey into Ms. Cho's past and present life in dealing with being who she is in the world that we live in. Revealing as it is hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly Inspirational Review: As a fellow San Franciscan and an Asian-American, I have been a long-time fan of Margaret Cho's work, and this film only confirms my love of her comedic abilities. Margaret's rhetoric is complete genius. Her way of tackling some of society's toughest issues with a laugh on the side is unique to Ms. Cho's stand-up. When she gives her thoughts on homophobia, racism, and weight you will find yourself glued to her insights."I'm the One That I Want" is the latest revelation of Cho's genius. It starts out as just about every Cho routine starts out: with her exclamation of her love of gay men. But later, her material begins to be very surprisingly emotional, almost heartbreaking, when she talks her alcoholic and sex addicted life preceeding her failed ABC sitcom, "All American Girl" (a tragic story still with many laughs, of course). Perhaps Cho's greatest achievement with this film is talking about her mother, and her pursuit of happiness as an immigrant to America, fighting racism and seeing her struggling daughter finally become a star (the first, true Asian-American star). This is also the outlet for Margaret Cho's side-splittingly funny impersonation of her elegant, sweet, and heavily accented mother: hands-down the funniest impersonation routine I've yet seen. This release will not only make you love Margaret, but also admire her for her life-fulfilling journey to "fit-in" to the American culture and become the revolutionary of the conception of female beauty. I eagerly await her upcoming release, "Notorious C.H.O."
Rating: Summary: Pretty good for a (way smart) high school dropout! Review: My first response to this video was: Eeeww! She was funny, but I wasn't sure I wanted to learn about men's gay porn. But she was waay too funny to turn off. She takes her horrible experience with the Hollywood celebrity mill and makes us laugh. I thought the show was well written and Margaret on stage was great. Her faces were priceless! This is a video to pop in the machine any time you're feeling sorry for yourself and need a good laugh.
Rating: Summary: CHO CHO CHO Review: This film is one of the finest comedy performances I have ever experienced. Margaret Cho is brutally honest and incredibly sincere in her comedy, which touches upon subjects that most comics would dare not touch. Her no-holds-barred approach to sexuality, both hers and her audience's, is hysterical, and her fans are as much fun as she is. I can't wait for more of her. C'mon, Margaret....give it to us... When's Notorious CHO coming out so I can watch it at home????
Rating: Summary: Amazing Hour and Half Review: This has to be one of the best one woman shows I have ever had the opportunity to see. The material is both comedic and tragic (they go together)The well blended material about reaching the heights in Hollywood and crashing to the bottom. Never once wallowing in self pity Cho takes us on journey through self discovery and how show learned to love herself. Well written and performed the DVD is going to part of my permamanet collection. There is so much to take in that with repeated viewings one would not get bored. I cannot recommend this more. I wish there were more than five stars to give which is not something I give lightly.
Rating: Summary: Would you like something to start? A Zaftig perhaps? Review: First of all, anyone who doesn't like, nay love the Notorious C.H.O is a little too "Tree in the Wind" for me. I liked this movie alot, because while being really funning Cho also weaves in tidbits of her personal T&T (trials and trubulations. She'll make you laugh, she'll make you cry...She'll make you wanna scream and kick and go a 'lil bonkerz. But hey, thats OK, this is america. Free Country. I've seen Margaret live 3 times now, and she's really nice in person too. Shy, even. I don't know why I'm telling you this, I just want to flaunt my knowledge of the Cho. Flaunt, flaunt. There, I feel better now. btw, does anyone know what Flaun is? I'm at a loss.
Rating: Summary: Touching and funny Review: I've always loved Margaret Cho, and was really looking forward to watching this. I wasn't disappointed. She's both frank and funny in this video...I really loved her honesty about a lot of the negative things she had been through. Her material in the video combines a lot of new stuff, with some of her classic old stuff (her mom's answering machine messages). I'm glad that Margaret is back, she's beautiful, funny, and as good as ever!
Rating: Summary: Incredible - Hilarious - Gutwrenching Review: The best comics pull from their deepest experiences. They are not afraid to be deeply serious, as well as hilarious. When the rare comic merges these two moods it becomes a magical form of performance art. Margaret Cho has acheived this fusion with this work - the strongest of her career. In this one woman show she looses the anguish that she experienced at the hands of ABC during the run of her sitcom "All American Girl." She describes the hideous aftermath that she experienced, and her journey back to the light. The true testement to Margaret as an artist, and not just a comic, is the humour she injects into a devestating situation. What evolves during the show is a sense of catharsis that is truly awe inspiring. I saw her perform this show live, and again in the film that was recorded months later - her performance was as fresh and heartfelt as ever. Margaret Cho is far more than a comedienne, she is a performance artist of highest caliber. I look forward to what she has to offer in the future.
Rating: Summary: Excellent after first 25 minutes Review: My wife is Korean, I am white. We first saw Margaret Cho at SSU in 1992 or 1993, and then watched her TV show bomb. We thought it was pretty much the end of her career, and that disappointed us greatly. The beginning of this video didn't change our impression, either. The first 25 minutes of pandering to the gay SF audience was so boring that my wife fell asleep. But then something different happened -- suddenly she started talking about her failed sitcom, and she started to get very real, very personal. Her stories were so intense that the jokes became more heartfelt and more intense as well. 45 minutes into the video I was alternating between laughing my throat hoarse and fighting back tears. I doubt it will be that extreme of an experience for most -- I suspect it is merely that, being married to a Korean woman, I have seen first-hand some of the same discrimination that Margaret describes. But it is nonetheless exceptionally funny, and hey, if all it does it make you laugh, well lucky you. After all, that is why you're considering buying this video, isn't it?
Rating: Summary: Margaret is the one that WE want! Review: I've been a huge fan of Margaret Cho's stand up comedy for a long time. I remember being so excited when she got her own show, "All American Girl" only to have it cancelled. Now, years later, this saucy Korean diva is back to talk about that traumatic time in her life and other personal points in her life as only she can. This concert is a laugh out loud riot and I never get tired of watching it. Margaret covers her love of gay men, her career and, of course, her mother. If you want to invite some friends over, sit back and laugh until you have tears rolling down your face, you'll want this dvd. Margaret Cho is brilliant and honest---this is my favorite comedy concert ever! Give it a try.
