Rating: Summary: she needs some new material Review: the whole mother impersonation thing, really annoying. the asian accents. even more annoying. is it because i am asian that I just don't think her material is all that exciting? It gets old, I like comedians that have more of a variety of material and don't just depend on their nationality or ethnicty to carry the jokes. eddie izzard rocks. she does not.
Rating: Summary: Margaret Cho: funny, with improvement needed Review: Korean-born Margaret Cho is one of today's top female-comedians. Like most standup artists, she delivers a good stage-appearance and keeps her audience laughing.Even though she is a favorite of mine, I believe that Maragret could improve on her act. Margaret Cho's humor is X-rated, so don't expect the same lines as Bill Cosby. Margaret speaks about things such as her obeseity, her experiences with her boyfriends, and [most noticeably] her mother. Although Maragret Cho will probably keep you laughing, it seems as if she's still learning the ropes of comedy. Her humor is still somewhat jaded, and is viewed as offensive by some people [including the national leaders of Korea]. Margaret Cho is doubtlessly funny, but she can upgrade herself, possibly to the heights of other *explict-humor* greats such as Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.
Rating: Summary: Talented Speaker, Boring Comedian Review: Margaret Cho is a very talented speaker. She can communicate a message clearly and effectively, and that is exactly what she did in "I'm the One That I Want." It was not funny. She didn't make any jokes. She told stories in a way that I personally found to be very annoying. As noted by other reviewers, all of her material alternates between mostly personal gay stories or fills in with other stories about her personal life. I don't care about her life or personal stories more than I would anyone else. I didn't need to watch an hour and a half of boring life stories from someone I don't even know. I already get enough of that in real life.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: THe first time I saw Margaret was on an HBO special wearing a skin-tight black leather catsuit and doing absolutely hilarious impressions of her mother. In this DVD, she still knows how to please with her raw humor that will make you roll on the floor laughing at times. Her experience on the Lesbian Loveboat is a classic. As a strong gay activist, many of her jokes deal with issues she faces in her experience as a "fag-hag," but I have seen a recent trend in her line-up that makes her jokes too geared toward the homosexual community. I'd rather have her set be a little more balanced. I guess that's just because I'd like to see her do more impressions of her mom that remind me of how crazy my Chinese mom can be. That's the stuff that got me hooked on her in the first place.
Rating: Summary: Cho is the one! Review: If anything, Cho's main virtue is her astounding ability to turn really sour and bitter experiences into comedy material. Get past the easier-to-tell sexual jokes, and you will find Cho's poignant criticisms of a society that privileges all the things that (apparently) she is not. Her observations on multiculturalism, pluralism, and especially her revealing experience with weight loss while filming her show "All American girl" (and the subsequent cancellation) will surely leave an imprint in your mind and leave you wondering about the double-standards and hipocrisy reigning in our society. Cho's "confessions," no matter how hilariously funny on the outside, are an amazing example of how this society can be truly cruel in its mistreatment of minorities (sexual, ethnic... whatever!). Oh, and did I mention that you will probably end up with severe stomachache from the laughter???? All I can say is.... YOU GO GIRL!!
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: Bought it at Capitol City Pride in Des Moines, Iowa last year. Great DVD- Margaret Cho is hilariously funny. Serious moments within the presentation also- a comedic autobiography.
Rating: Summary: She's The One That I Want Review: I have this on VHS and DVD and if you want to laugh and laugh and laugh and you don't wince at some very over-the-top material, all I can say is Thank God for Margaret Cho. She is the best, period. It usually takes us 2 and a half hours to get through one viewing of her DVD because we have to stop and rewind just to hear what we missed because we are laughing so hard,or just to replay a spot that is so incredibly funny. You just want to be friends with her because she would be so much fun to hang with. Margaret , we love you and you ROCK. Please keep us laughing for years to come.
Rating: Summary: Never felt so straight Review: This movie is funny, but I'm either too old or too straight and white and middle class because some of the references and jokes went right over my head. I mean, I know who Karl Lagerfeld is (I don't live under a rock), but that apparently he carries a fan and speaks in a thick Teutonic accent? And male porn star's names? I guess I'm terminally unhip. The most compelling part of the concert deals with her experience with the network sitcom -- it's hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. And when Margaret imitates her mother's phone messages -- well, break out the Depends and put plastic on the sofa. Definitely NOT family entertainment, and may be too raunchy even for some adults. If you're going to watch it with friends, make sure you know their tastes and attitudes VERY well. Sound quality of the DVD is marginal.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: The show gets off to a slow start (the whole Karl Lagerfeld thing wasn't all that funny to me), but after that the show picks up. I hurt myself laughing during the part where she talks about her mother leaving messages on her answering machine. The part where she discusses her failed sitcom and her subsequent substance abuse was alternatingly funny and poignant. I hope she never quits. A sense of humor is a terrible thing to waste.
Rating: Summary: To steal from Olivia, We Honestly Love CHO Review: While many comics stick to the safety of jokes with punchlines, Margaret Cho goes out on a limb. She recounts touching moments in her life, and just as you're about to shed a tear, she punches you in the gut with her comic genius! You may have heard some of this material before, but never has vaginal cleansing sounded so appealing! Margaret's take on lesbian cruises, gay porn, and her mother's phone messages will leave you crying and gasping for air! Her stories are brutally honest and life-affirming, but the best part of this DVD might just be found in the Behind-The-Scenes section. When Margaret reads an emotional letter from a fan whose partner died of AIDS, your heart will explode with love, as she says that hers did. ... I've got chills, they're multiplying... And I'm losing control... The power she's supplying... It's ELECTRIFYING! She's Margaret Cho, and we're not worthy!
