Summary: One of the best of Woody Allen's early films.
Review: "Sleeper," as is often true with futuristic films, tells us principally about the present, our present hopes, anxieties and fears. It also showcases Woody Allen's mapcap movie-making style. Not many reviews I've read, however, point out how derivative the film is. To truly appreciate "Sleeper's" humor and Allen's capacity for parody, take a look at George Lucas' early film "THX 1138" first and immediately follow it with "Sleeper." Much of "Sleeper" seems to be a conscious parody of "THX 1138," produced two years earlier. Nonetheless, "Sleeper" stands up well on its own as a clever and at times hilarious film.

Summary: Woody Allen's best
Review: A man is put into cryogenic freeze & is awaken 1,000 years later to a world ruled by a dictator. He must join an underground rebel group & steal the dictator's nose. Zany!

Summary: Let's Assassinate the President, Mark II
Review: Allen's zany trilogy of 'Let's Get the Leader' movies came in an almost uninterrupted sequence: BANANAS, SLEEPER and LOVE & DEATH. In the case of BANANAS, Woody didn't consciously go for any particular form; he simply took his funniest gags and built a sort of plot around it. In the cases of SLEEPER and LOVE & DEATH, he's more reliant on the forms he is parodying, specifically terrestrial sci-fi movies and big Russian novels, respectively.

SLEEPER is one of his most controversial movies, in terms of the range of responses it elicits. More reliant on Chaplin-esque visual gags than any of his other movies, there are some parts that Allen himself now finds childish and embarrassing. For a man who started his career doing some great stand-up humour and writing jokes for others, I guess you need to prove to yourself that you can do the visual stuff too.

There are many great moments here, as other reviewers have mentioned: the Orgasmatron, that orb, and the pair of cops with the exploding bazooka.

I was a great fan of Allen movies as a teenager in the 70s. Being male, gawky and wearing glasses, I tried adopting Allen's on-screen persona myself once or twice. It failed absolutely with the girls. That's what I cannot understand about this classic Allen trilogy: in every one he is the bespectacled coward, and yet he always gets the girl -- sometimes more than one! It never worked for me, so this movie gets a 0 out of 10 from me on instruction in seduction technique.

Summary: Amazingly funny and entertaining ****1/2
Review: Although no Aniie Hall (I haven't seen Manhattan), Woody Allen's film Sleeper is still great. Yes, Woody is the usual nervous guy who has gone through relationships with enough puns and one-liners to keep you laughing for well over the running time. But instead of the usual, Woody is accidentally frozen for 200 years. When he wakes up, he must convince (who else?) Diane Keaton that he's not an alien. Although somewhat shallow, plotless, and outdated, I was engaged with this film the whole way. An excellent film to rent on dvd or tape, and possibly watch again (but I wouldn't buy this film). Great. Thank you for taking the time to read my review and feel free to leave me a helpful/not helpful feedback. God Bless America!

Summary: His Funniest Film
Review: By the time this film was released I was already a full fledged Woody fan, based on Bananas and Take the Money and Run. But unlike those two, this film wasn't a series of sketches. It was a coherent film with a concept (albeit a warped Woody concept) that works from beginning to end. Bits like Woody having sex with the orgasm machine, and Woody pretending to be a doctor who's going to clone the "Leader" from the remainder of his nose, are classic.

Summary: Woody Allen Splapstick on So-So DVD
Review: Fans of Woody Allen's slapstick comedy should pick it up on this MGM DVD presentation.

The transfer looks a bit soft and grainy throughout the film, but still better than VHS. The sound is presented in mono and that's okay for this Allen film.

As far as bonus materials...there's a trailer.

Kind of a clunker, but if you are in the market for the movie itself, pick it up.

Summary: It is so stupid it is funny!
Review: From being unfrozen, acting as a robot, inflating like a blimp, getting stuck in the sexotron, arguing with Diane Keaton, and just being Woody Allen, this is the funniest movie I know.

Summary: Way ahead of his time.
Review: Funny, creative, ingenious, flawless, timeless. All of these things i never thought about woody allen. Until now. This movie is not an earth shattering life-changing vehicle. But, it is just about as perfect a movie as it can be. It is funny in the right places, Romantic in the right places, and just a little serious when it needs to be. I cannot believe i enjoyed this movie. I am a passerby of allen flicks at best. But, i am happy i stopped off to watch this one. It's a must-have for anyone with a good sense of humor and those who want a good excuse to smoke cigarettes....Just watch the movie and you'll see what i mean by that.

Summary: Excellent! One of Woody Allen's Funniest!
Review: I absolutely love this movie. I remember watching it on Allen's birthday and they were showing a marathon. I had never heard of this one, and I can't believe I'm a big fan of his work and never came across this one. A must-see! Woody Allen stars as a man who went into a hospital in 1973 for a routine ulcer operation, went into a coma, and wakes up exactly 200 years in the future, having been frozen. What ensues is one the most hilarious movies around. Allen and Diane Keaton are a dynamic comic duo, and the screenplay by Allen and Marshall Brickman is excellent. Full of hilarious sight gags in the tradition of Buster Keaton and great one-liner jokes in the style of Bob Hope. I discovered that this was Allen's intention. Along with the excellent performances by Allen and Keaton, Woody Allen's direction and use of music steers toward brilliance. The Rag Time Rascals, the band he jammed with on occasion, plays throughout the movie, with Allen on the clarinet. Awesome Flick!
