Rating: Summary: Funny!! Review: I know the professional critics hated this movie but I could care less because I really liked this movie and thought it was hilarious and some of the stuff in the movie though exaggerated really ring true. Me and My Mom visited her sister and when I used my Aunt's sink and I turned the faucet on the old plumming pipes made a loud clanking noise like in this movie and every time I used her sink the noise made me think of the Money Pit. I have this video and I hope they put the movie on DVD!
Rating: Summary: Nothing special Review: Being in construction I have often referred to this movie during talks with homeowners in the middle of remodeling. With great talent and a premise with great potential, I was a bit disappointed with the movie, it has some entertaining moments, but lacks anything special. I don't think I've seen it more than once, which for a Hanks movie is tantamount to saying it stunk, but I won't go that far. I'd call it a so-so comedy with not much of a recommendation but if you're curious,,,well, you may disagree.
Rating: Summary: The Money Pit Is The Pits Review: I'm astonished at all the glowing reviews on this page. This movie is not worth it. Now, before I bash it, I'll admit that there are some really amusing parts. The scene with Tom Hanks laughing when the tub goes through the floor is hysterical. But, it is not enough to save a really mediocre film. Ha!, that's putting it too nicely. A very un-well made film that had a lot of potential to be funny. It's only funny in a few spots that are few and far between. See this movie if you have to see every Tom Hanks movie.
Rating: Summary: Simply too funny Review: "The Money Pit" may have been a disaster at the box office and with critics at the time but this movie is just too hilarious. This is one of the few movies that makes me laugh until tears starts rolling down my face. My personal favorite moment is when Shelly Long finds a raccoon in the dumb waiter and it leaps at her. Seeing her running around screaming with a raccoon on her shoulder is hysterical. Of course just watching Tom Hanks' character try to fix the house is equally funny, particularly when he hears Shelly's character screaming and he runs...or tries to run up the poorly built staircase. The classic moment is when he falls into that hole and is stuck there for most of the day, missing out on an important meeting with a contractor and then seeing Shelly Long's expression when she finds him stuck in the hole. "The Money Pit" remains one of my top favorite comedies of all time as well as favorite Tom Hanks film.
Rating: Summary: PURE COMEDY Review: The true test that this movie is just downright funny is that I just finished going through my own mini "money pit" experience and I still howl while watching this movie!! My absolute favorite scene is when Tom Hanks gets stuck in the floor and is squeaking out "I'm here." I always laugh so hard that my abs hurt afterwards!! No, this movie is not Oscar worthy, but if you think that Tom was at his best in Bosom Buddies and Bachelor Party, and you stopped (or were tempted to stop) watching Cheers after Shelly Long departed, then this is a movie for you. :-)
Rating: Summary: Ha HAAAAA! Review: This movie really has some downright funny moments. My personal favorite being the tub falling through the floor after Tom Hanks pours some water into it. His reaction and over-the-top laughter will have you laughing right along with him. This laugh can be found around the web on wav files. It's truly a classic moment.
Rating: Summary: Funny and Light-Hearted Review: This is a very enjoyable, light-hearted flick. It features a younger, slimmer, and funnier version of Tom Hanks than the one we know from more recent politically correct or repetitious movies. His Socratic reasoning with Shelley Long is just hilarious. Exaggeration is what makes this movie, and every comedy that uses it, funny or funnier. So I do not see why people criticize the film as "unrealistic." This is not a documentary. I definitely recommend this movie.
Rating: Summary: A fun funny romp Review: This movie is a lite-hearted, fun little romp through the horrors of repairing an old house. Although exaggerated, it rings true if you've ever been in a like situation. This movie was funny, and because it didn't try to take itself seriously, it worked out. Don't buy this one, you probably won't watch it more than once, but I'd definitely go out and rent it.
Rating: Summary: Very, very funny Review: I don't care what this movie is based on, or if it is an inferior attempt at that movie. I think this is worthy in its own right. As a matter of fact, I have quite personal reasons for appreciating this film. Some twelve years ago, we actually went through an experience just like this one. True enough, we never had to buy the house froma lady who dissolved in a flood of tears while explaining how you know someone for twenty five years... And then the Israeli secret service arrive.. It wasn't exactly like that. What happened to us was that the house was discovered to have had dry rot - in England this is the worst of bad news. Hanks discovers not just this, but an impossible multiplication of similar things. Impossible - no. Once you have experienced anything like this, you know just how terribly easy it all is to slide into the money pit. ("Mozart is dead, his troubles are over, help ME!") The character who is the conductor is completely plausible (I know exactly who the real life character is), and the characters who come to fix the house are.. priceless. If you don't believe this can really happen, you go, have two kids, find a house in Farnborough and invite fate. In our case, the contractors didn't quite have the style of the one's in the film ("Quick. Write me a cheque before I come to my senses"). The ones I had to deal with, it must be said, sadly, did not play Italian opera in their sports cars at 92 dB. I love the way this movie had of making my wife and I laugh ourseleves stupid. It really helped us cope with a humourless situation in real life, and I salute Tom Hanks, who makes a fool of himself so well, and has probably smoothed away so much real hurt in the real world. What a lovely man! If you need any more convincing, skip to the last bit, where Tom and his beloved are regularly trading insults, being spied on by the builders, and finally decide to split just when the house is complete... If you want a squishy soft ending, this is it. Of course, the whole thing is manifestly absurd, and bears no resemblence to real life.
Rating: Summary: It doesn't get much funnier. Review: Slapstick humor at it's best, the Money Pit will have you rolling! No matter how many times my family and I watch this movie, it always makes us laugh ... not just giggles, but all-out belly laughs! My favorite scene is when the whole "mouse trap" that they've built around the house comes crashing down after a series of mishaps. The background music makes the scene. Rent this ... you'll love it ... and let's hope it's released on DVD soon, maybe with some outtakes!
