Summary: My man Godfrey for us in the UK
Review: Well I have been a big fan of William Powell for a number of years now so when I saw this disc I jumped at the chance of getting it as the UK market for classic DVD's is still pitiful compared to what is available in the US. Well it's not the best looking DVD you'll have in your collection but I garantee it's one film that you'll keep coming back to, And as a bonus for us classic film fans here in the UK this version of the disc is region free, It's still in NTSC, But most UK TV's less than 5 years old can cope with that now. I love this film and even with the shortfalls of this version it's still one of the discs I'm most happy about getting.

Summary: Lombard Shines
Review: Carole Lombard left this world all too soon as this film will attest.

She was mercurial in her comedy. In this film a master like Bill Powell matchs her antics with grace and finesse. Watch for Gail Patrick( Jackson) as her sister, the great Eugene Pallette as the Father and the comedy Phantom of film Mischa Auer who is quite funny and unique.

Great Dialogue like this ( Pallette , referring to his losses on Wall st) " I lost a lot of money yesterday "! to which the wife( Alice Brady) responds..." Oh..is it in your other coat"?

Has to be seen again. Gregory LaCava dir.

Summary: Great Movie, DVD Does It Little Justice
Review: I had hoped for a better transfer, but no such luck. Quality is not markedly better than my old VHS version, and it is *missing a scene* which is in the VHS version (where Powell kicks Lombard out of his room, telling her that as his "sponsor" it will reflect badly on her, and thus on him...). This is particularly annoying bacause the later interchange between Lombard's character and Molly (the cook) makes reference to Powell's action, which on the DVD version now has no context. Very disappointing, since this is such a wonderful movie.

Summary: Great film with two great stars!
Review: Lombard and Powell are fabulous alone, and together they are even better! This movie is a wonderful example from the era of screwball comedies and is one of my favorite films. It is my favorite film with Lombard! Ok from what I have heard, the DVD is a waste of money but I love my VHS and it is the same version that I saw on tv so I'm perfectly happy with it.

Summary: Great movie, lousy transfer
Review: I have had a VHS version of this movie for some time that looks just fine. It appears that the DVD makers found the worst film print available to transfer for this DVD version. It is such a disappointment. Buy the VHS or wait for the DVD makers to do a proper transfer.

Summary: A GREAT madcap that needs to be remastered
Review: Carole Lombard does some of her finest work here. Bill Powell is at least as slick as our old friend, Nick Charles. Too bad my new VHS copy reminds me of watching channel 13 at 3am in 1963.

Summary: Yet another great Lombard screball classic!
Review: Carole Lombard was the worlds favourite screwball actress in the 1930's, and no one has matched her wit since. Whether she is draped in a clingy gown or has a pie in her face, she makes the transtions with ease. William Powell plays a hobo by the name of Godfrey, who is found by socialite Irene Bullock, played by Carole Lombard and taken back to her mansion to be kept as a servant. Irene rebells against her prestigious lifestyle and Godfrey discovers there is more to the Bullock family than meets the eye. All members of the family seem to have their own sets of problems and Godfrey is always there to lend a willing ear. Irene is infatuated with him from the start but he remains aloof throughout the movie. The ending has a surprising turn, with Godfrey marrying Irene under strange circumstances. All in all, I think this movie is well strung together, the actors flow well and the movie is guaranteed to give you pains in your side!

Summary: Enchanting story of a phoenix that entertains and inspires.
Review: William Holden perfectly portrays a man rising from the ashes of a fomer, high society life. The movie surrounds him with a delightful assortment of screw-ball characters who create subplots that make the whole movie fun while it tells its inspiring tale. This blend of inspiration and fun captivates long after the movie ends. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Summary: GREAT FILM, BUT HORRENDOUS TRANSFER TO DVD
Review: "My Man Godfrey" is one of the best of the 1930's Screwball comedies, hence the high rating. It would have gotten five stars, but the DVD is taken from an incomplete dupe. The results are, to say the least, virtually unwatchable. Hope is on the horizon; Universal has struck new 35mm prints from the original negative, and it's playing right here in Philly. Hopefully, after the cinema reissue, Universal Studios wil finally do right by this movie and release a pristine DVD(and VHS for those who still only have that).

Summary: Great movie, but bad DVD!
Review: "My Man Godfrey" is one of my all-time favorite movies. But check your TV listings and record it from the TV. It will be one of the rare times when a late-night TV rerun gives you a more complete movie and better quality than the DVD. This DVD has at least one missing scene. One very important scene is when Irene goes to Godfrey's room and Godfrey tells Irene that she must never enter the butler's room again. This is a crucial scene because later when there is jewelry missing everyone rushes into Godfrey's room, but Irene stands outside at the doorway. Another bad thing about the DVD is the picture is all washed out. This very excellent five-star movie is a 2-star DVD.
