Summary: Class and Sass
Review: I watch this movie when I need to be reminded of the beauty of humanity -- it showcases human emotion in a dignified and honest manner through witty, refined dialouge, w/o resorting to violence or vulgarity. The charcters are precious creatures beautifully portrayed by a breathtaking cast. I have seen other productions of this story, all gone ary because of lack of charisma -- after all, who can top Katherine, Cary and James all at the top of their game. This movie is and shall perhaps always be my favorite becasue it relies on good old fashion techniques to produce a quality entertainment experience.

Summary: True classic, beautifully preserved and re-released.....
Review: Despite the fact that this film raises issues that are not very potent today, it remains to be a timeless classic because of its sheer artistic value. This great artistic value is largely due to the brilliant idea (the idea of creating a play about Kathrene Hepburn [not literally, of course], for Kathrene Hepburn), the plot itself, and film's charming and witty script. Hepburn is the only and true star in this story, although I can appreciate Stewart and Grant in their roles. But truly, it would not have mattered much artistically, if different supporting cast was chosen. Apparently, it did matter to RKO commercially a great deal. Thank God for that, because Stewart, Grant, Hussey, and Howard all added something to the film. The result is a story with a "love...well, let's just say, more than a usual triangle", that revolves around one Philadelphia society girl and a few of her eccentric family members. The DVD has an outstanding sound and picture quality. Cute little menu and original theatrical trailer are also included. It is nice to know that this great film will stay with us for generations to come and enjoy it.

Summary: THERE IS NO 64 MINUTE DOCUMENTARY!
Review: If you have the old DVD and you want to buy this one because of the supposed 64 Minute documentary, don't! There is no such documentary on this disc. I don't know where Amazon got their information from, but this incorrect. The movie on the other hand, is outstanding and is a welcomed addition to the pile of 1:85.1 and 2:35.1 aspect ratioed films of today. There was no such thing back then. But this film is excellent now and will be enjoyed for years to come. Just don't buy it for the documentary that isn't there!

Summary: An Impeccable Romantic-Comedy!
Review: One of the best and most sophisticated romantic-comedies of all time. A rare treat: a movie that features 3 of Hollywood's greatest stars. Impeccably witty dialogue and great acting make this thoroughly enjoyable and infinitely watchable. Cary Grant should of gotten an oscar nomination for his performance as C.K. Dexter Haven. Katherine Hepburn is perfect as Tracy Lord. But it is Jimmy Stewart who shines as Mucaulay Connor, delivering a sparkling performance. Great direction and an outstanding supporting cast. One of the most entertaining movies of all time. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 10!

Summary: A MOST SPARKLING COMEDY!
Review: Set in the world of high society, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY is a sophisticated romantic comedy about and arrogant young woman (Kate, natch) who learns a few things about herself and what she wants in a 24 hour period before her second wedding. Philip Barry wrote this play especially for Hepburn and it rekindled her screen career. The excellent dialogue is the mainstay of the film which is dominated by Great Kate's presence; Stewart won an AA for his playing of Mike Connor and Grant is amusingly funny as Dexter; the rest of the cast give uniformly excellent performances. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY fits the curious talents of the redheaded Ms. Hepburn like a coat of quick-drying enamel. As I mentioned priorly, Philip Barry wrote his play with Kate in mind, and this film actually made her again a bankable star after being "labled box-office poison" in the late thirties. The script is brittle with plenty of smart-talk which suited Hepburn's metallic voice while its languid action became her lean, rangy body; when Katharine Hepburn sets out to play herself, nobody is then her equal! Surrounded by the considerable talents of Cary Grant, James Stewart (AA), Roland Young and Ruth Hussey, Hepburn was ably assisted by pristine props! In any screen year, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY would belong among the best comedies of the year; its people are recognisable humans: they drink, make mistakes, they discuss their feelings and even discuss such ideas as class differences and decide there aren't any. All this makes for excellent adult entertainment - but in one respect, the story is childish since part of its plot is based on the naive assumption that "nice people" don't read picture magazines, that "the right sort" don't allow themselves to be photographed, that editors get picture stories by blackmail. Philip Barry knew better! This is classic Hollywood moonshine, impeccably distilled.

Summary: A Classic Among Classics
Review: This is one of my favorite movies ever, and not because it is set practically in my backyard. It contains three of the best actors of all time, and features a marvelous and humorous plot. The translation to DVD is also masterful. Highly recommended.
