Summary: Absolutely Awful
Review: Don't waste your money even renting this movie. Zeta Jones, although beautiful, was horrendous and Clooney did his best to fit his awful character. Utterly predictable. Universal and the directors should be embarrassed. Worst movie of the year.

Summary: This film fascinates me...
Review: Ahhh Miles Massey, master of the divorce court. This was simply an amazing piece of acting by Clooney, he took a completely repugnant stereotype of the rich, often vulture-like divorce attorney and made him quite the charming cad who at times we feel absolute pity for. Of course, he did have quite a foil in Catherine Zeta-Jones-Douglas (last hyphenation added for my amusement only), who plays the gold-digging Marylin Rexroth (her husbands name of course) that we come to at least respect, if not actually like.

For lovers of the light romantic comedy with copious good quips and quotable lines (I still can't stop saying "She fascinates me" and "the Massey pre-nup has never been penetrated") this movie provides more style-drenched comedy than romance (perhaps think Grosse Point Blank with lawyers instead of hit men).

Overall, a great selection that I would recommend to fans of the genre. While Zeta-Jones plays her usual cool, sophisticated character, Clooney takes some of the bravado of Danny Ocean and adds a big dollop of smarm. The combination made for some great laughs and the usual make-your-heart-smile finish that we expect with a movie like this.

Hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Summary: Bad Coen Brothers?
Review: I didn't think it was possible but yes it has indeed happened. The Coen Brothers have made their first stinker. Stay away from this awful Brian Grazer produced film. Let's hope that we can expect more from the Coen's next film "The Ladykillers."

Summary: Farce with a heart - screwball comedy ala brothers Coen
Review: Lighter and more conventional than the films establishing their reputation (BLOOD SIMPLE, MILLER'S CROSSING, FARGO, etc.), INTOLERABLE CRUELTY nevertheless signals the Coen brothers' return to form after recent disappointments. Though the antagonists (played by George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones) are outlandishly cynical, the movie itself is not. No one is truly nasty in this story, only flawed (but deeply), and in true screwball tradition their innate human warmth endears them to us despite their mercenary attitudes toward love. Zeta-Jones and Clooney's battle is like the battles between Russell & Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY, or Hepburn & Tracy in PAT & MIKE. They never descend to the depraved meanspiritedness portrayed in deVito's WAR OF THE ROSES.

Zeta-Jones is delicious, giving us more in the flickering light in her eyes than most actors give at their most histrionic. (She's very nearly in William Hurt's class.) And in Clooney's performance I finally see the incipient charm for which some have compared him (a bit optimistically) to Archibald Leach himself. The supporting cast is top notch, too: Herrmann, Rush, Cedric, Duffy, Royce Applegate, and Jonathan Hadary are all splendid in their little roles. And Billy Bob Thornton finally gets to display his craft as a character actor again, coming through with a performance as fine as his faro-dealer in TOMBSTONE.

The script is deft - - witty without calling attention to itself, which is no mean feat given characters equally conversant with Shakespeare and first-growth Bordeaux wines. I especially admired Clooney's character's speech on love and marriage at the divorce lawyers' convention: emotional without sinking into sentimentality, morally focused but not preachy, a believable epiphany amidst farce. It is good to see the Coen brothers doing again what no other filmmaker has done so consistently. Perhaps they are the Aristophanes of our age.

As for the star rating, I would give 3 ½ stars if Amazon permitted, meaning that I liked more than a little even though it falls short of the Coens' best. Their best is very good, however, nearing and sometimes reaching greatness. And compared to the goblets of dreck usually served by Hollywood, INTOLERABLE CRUELTY is quite tolerable, surprisingly pleasing to the palate. Not Chateau Margaux, to be sure, but not a jug of Red Mountain, either. Perhaps this movie needs to breathe a bit after uncorking. Somehow I suspect it will improve with age, thus give it the benefit of the doubt and award 4 stars instead of 3.

Summary: See it for Catherine only!
Review: Disappointed in this film. It was worth watching for Catherine Zeta Jones only. I found myself drifting off. It had good moments, but I expected more from these actors and from the directors of this movie. After watching, I soon realized why I hadn't heard much about it when it was playing in theaters. Rent, don't buy this film if you must see it.

Summary: Great chemistry, but too quirky for it's own good.
Review: George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones light up the screen in every scene they have together. They have phenomenal chemistry and great comic timing. Also, the dialogue is sharp, and in my opinion, is the only reason to watch this film a second time. But, and here it comes, the story is predictable and fairly lame. The Coen brothers try very hard to save the story with their unique brand of dialogue and the occasional insertion of a strange character, but most of the comedy is forced and the characters are too quirky to be believed. Why Geoffrey Rush is even in the movie is a really good question. He disappears from the movie ten minutes in and pops up only twice more during the picture for cameos. It's just as well, because he isn't funny at all. Talk about trying too hard. Speaking of cameos, look for Bruce Campbell(Army of Darkness, Evil Dead 1 and 2) as a doctor standing in the background on the set of a soap opera. There are certainly some bizarre and over-the-top comedic moments but the two lead actors made me like the movie. Worth seeing, but not really worth owning. Later.

Summary: Very Tolerable, Cruel and Funny
Review: After their more offbeat experiments like "Fargo" or "Raising Arizona", the Coen Bros return with this somewhat conventional yet still consistent cinematic experience. "Intolerable Cruelty" is a dark romantic comedy, a satire on the rich and shallow californian people and their convenient marriages and divorces.
George Clooney plays a cynical, clever attourney and Catherine Zeta Jones enters as one of his new clients. As their relationship develops, a lot of sarcastic comedic situations unfold, providing an entertaining and witty picture. As far as romantic comedies go, this one earns some points for presenting originality and freshness, avoiding the sappy and overly sentimental fluff that mines so many others. The dialogue is well-written and there are even the typical weird characters that the Cohen Bros present in their movies, like the one played by Billy Bob Thornton.
Although commercial and targeted at a wider audience, "Intolerable Cruelty" is an engaging and intelligent comedy with some truly hilarious moments. Recommended.

Summary: Intolerable Cruelty to watch this movie!
Review: This was by far the worst movie I saw at the cinema last year. Being honest, I wouldn't watch it again if someone paid me, let alone pay for the DVD. The plot is not a particulaly gripping one, and there are lots of cheesy unfunny 'jokes' played repetedly throughout. Catherine Zeta Jones needs to get a refund from her acting school, and George Clooney was better in his ER days.

If you are seriously looking for a laugh, I recommend forgetting about this DVD and spending a few more dollars on the Curb Your Enthusiasm, Season 1 box set. - Trust me, it will be worth it in the long run!

Summary: You want to be a divorce lawyer?
Review: More truth than you want in this movie. And funny. Watch Clooney when he gets called to the senior partner's office. Laugh til you cry. A good one.
