Summary: A Very Realistic Satire
Review: Although this film was indeed a satire, it probed so realistically into the so often ridiculous world we live in that it really transcended its genre. Christina Ricci is consistently fascinating and gives her character prismatic like dimension in this role. What came as a complete shock, though, was the brilliance of newcomer Hank Harris. Because he barely spoke and was limited by his character's relative confinement, the actor could have easily become an inanimate object to the fiercely alive Ricci, but instead delivered a positively Harpoesque performance of touching hilarity. And boy, did, he have dignity. You can completely feel how Ricci's character feels because the ... boy is so uncannily charming. Yet, he really does seem ... disabled. I was really praying they wouldn't attempt to make the audience feel sorry for this character, and they didn't. The music was also mesmerizing, and the look of the film was beautiful. I hope to see more from these directors ... .

Summary: Pumpkin
Review: This was one of the more intense movies i have seen in a while. The title interested in from the beginning and therefore, being a Ricci fan, I decided to rent it. Yes, it takes on a more serious topic and attempts to take a different approach. I think the point of this movie was to go to extremes; to show a young sheltered woman finally learn that the world is not all roses and chocolates. I thought that this movie rocked, along with the soundtrack. It was one of those movies that, i feel, you either really liked or really loathed. I found it truly fascinating.

Summary: farce on love and against-all-odds stories
Review: Glancing over some of the reviews of this movie I am a bit suprised at so many of the negative reviews. It seems to me that we must have been watching a different movie. As "implausable" and "unrealistic" as Pumpkin seemed to be in the views of some of the other reviewers, I found a humourous delicate black comedy that pokes at the world of self obsorbtion and arrogance.
Christina Ricci known for her bold choices in her career and for her ability as an actress plays the main character Carolyn- A sorority sister dating a very popular and "studly" tennis star at a major college in southern california. What more could a girl ask for? What could be more perfect? To Carolyn this was perfection, outside of her competition with a neighboring sorority, life couldn't get any better.
All of this is portrayed in the movie with tongue and cheek glee (think Brady Bunch mixed with 90210). Carolyn's life is turned upside down when she meets up with Pumpkin, a mentally challenged young man who is emmidiatly smitten with her. Carolyn resents her own feelings towards him but eventually she realizes they are "soul mates".
The rest of the movie is about these two very different people finding love with eachother- or so it seems. This is the cleaver part- the story is a twist on all of those sappy "our-love-will-heal-the-world" Cinderella type stories. The director leads the viewer up to the very end dabbing cliches here and there to keep the viewer assuming, but then, subtly there is a twist- and then the end.
The movie is a success on many levels- and for me it did what I always look for art to do- entertain and provoke. See for yourself...

Summary: What Went Wrong?
Review: This was a movie with a fine cast and great potential. However, it played like a bad "Lifetime" movie, in which there are scenes and lines of dialogue that are unintentionally funny or melodramatic, and do nothing more than highlight the inconsistencies of both throughout the movie. Perhaps there was something to this movie that I didn't understand. It tried to be funny and dramatic and failed on both counts. Furthermore, the storyline could have used some punching-up. There were a few new twists, however, the rich-girl-meets-inappropriate-mate- and-must-choose-between-him-and-her-friends story has been done ad nauseum. Lead actress Christina Ricci is capable of picking better roles, demonstrated by her work in "Pecker" and "The Opposite of Sex."

Summary: Modern Day Absurdism At Its Finest
Review: From the opening "Graduate"-like shot to the very end, where there seems to be a great "400 Blows" takeoff, "Pumpkin" kids every cliche in the book to become one of the first true absurdist films to come out of Hollywood in a very long time. Our society, our films, and the way we tell stories are made fun of in this truly subtle and brilliant film.

What's even more fascinating is how the film uses traditional narrative to keep us involved in the story. Most absurdism gets boring about halfway through. Kudos to Christina Ricci, who I assume found the script and the filmmakers to make what I only believe will become a tragicomic classic!

Summary: Forced, but still somewhat watchable
Review: Pumpkin stars Christina Ricci who is as good as usual in her role as a sorority girl. The movie should get some credit for trying to be a satire, I guess I respect any movie that attempts to shed some light on appropiate targets. However, it misses the point entirely, and is incoherent and unfocused. The filmmakers actually started on an interesting premise and didn't know what to do with it. And a sub plot with the smothering mother of Pumpkin involving the almost exploitation of her son with the "Special Olympics" type games should've been developed to fruition.

Summary: Is it Just Bad, or is it Funny?
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was not at all what I expected... it was much better than just a tear-jerker coming-of-age film about a sorority girl and a "challenged" man. It is all satirical and pokes fun at sororities and even itself. The parts that seem really bad are hilarious if you go into it realizing that it is intentional. The car crash scene cracked me up. The actual footage of the car bursting into flame was obviously from some other movie or just stock footage. I think that the people who reviewed this movie poorly just took it too seriously. You have to laugh at these characters. If you thought that they seemed like real people and not exaggerated stereotypes, then you missed the point. Really.

Summary: Rotten Pumpkin
Review: For the first 2/3 of this film, it wasn't bad. Christina Ricci was interesting to wacth, as always, and any film with Brenda Blethyn already has a few points in its favor. However, the last fifteen minutes of this film contained the absolute worst dialogue and situations I've ever experienced. For example, the vain star tennis player drives off a cliff, his car burst into flames, then he is next seen in the hospital, unscathed, but paralyzed. Within a month, he is coaching the very special needs individuals he loathed. Hmm. Don't waste your time or money on this drivel. Sorry, Brenda. Sorry, Christina.

Summary: HA HA HA!
Review: If I could reveiw this movie lower I would have. Whoever liked this movie must love horrible dialougue and acting. The [things] she say's is embarassing. If I were Ricci I'd stay out of the movie buisness until this one blew over. I'll just put it this way, it blowed bad, way worse then I could even imagine. I won't waste anymore time writing because I wasted too much time watching the awful movie.

Summary: I'm pretty sure i could make a better movie.
Review: First off - what a promising subject. A popular college sorority girl falls for a challenged man. It has potential, really! But what i just watched was almost humorous. The music, the acting, the dialogue...was disgusting. I'm almost positive that i could gather some kids out of a high school drama class, and produce a better film than "pumpkin". I laughed after Tennis-Star "Kent" drives his car off a cliff, plunging 200+ feet into the mountainside. The next scene shows kent with not a scratch on his body - but thats ok - he's paralyzed. Right. Christina Ricci provides no real emotion in any scene at all, in my opinion. This movie is not dramatic, its comedic. Quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. Right up there with the perfect storm, or spy hard, for that matter. Whatever you do - avoid this movie like the plague. Honestly.
