Rating: Summary: Touching, unconventional... see it!!! Review: First off, Pumpkin may be one of the strangest movies you've seen in a long time. Throughout the movie you'll be asking yourself... WHAT is this movie exactly? Is it a comedy? You may find the character's innocently bigoted comments interesting and some of the scenes wildly exaggerated but you probably wont be rolling on the floor. I suppose its sort of a dark comedy but then I never really 'got' dark comedy. So then is it a drama? It mostly seems to be. Melodrama seems to fit sometimes. Its sad and cheesy at once. Sometimes its just a goofy teen movie (hence has slutty blonde cheerleader types and other stereotypes). The whole barbie/ken appearance of Carolyn and Kent also suggests that the movie isn't supposed to be taken seriously... and yet it asks to be too. The movie's sad, touching, weird, symbolic, and twisted all at once. The romance is a little goofy in that the whole 'falling in love' part is somewhat skipped over. But I was definitely fixated on the movie the whole way through. Its touching in that it makes you think about how people view each other and the world we live in. It ends on a Hollywood happy ending but leaves you... sad. So in the end, everyone should see Pumpkin at least once. Even if you hate it... hopefully it'll make you think. And that's just a good movie in and of itself.
Rating: Summary: Major disappointment for Christa Ricci fans!!!! Review: I would not recommend this movie in a thousand years. Don't waste your money or time on this one. This movie has a weak plot and major holes in storyline. The characters were completely unbelievable. Being a huge Christina Ricchi fan, this movie was a major disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Completly forgettable Review: Don't waste your money to buy or rent this movie. The only good characters were Cici and pumpkin, the rest was dull. The movie moves way to slow and the acting is uneventful. Unless you are a big fan of Christina Ricci or love moves of this genre I suggest you skip it and spend your time more wisely.
Rating: Summary: Life is funny... and beautiful Review: Pumpkin is not a hilarious comedy-- and if it was, I think I would have hated it. It is very amusing -- but its greatness lies in its freshness as a story. It simply is a story about how life is so strange. So, the only reason I laughed was because life is funny. As ridiculous as the characters act, they still hold so much truth. Real people are this ridiculous! If you're looking for a story you haven't seen before -- you need to see Pumpkin ... and the soundtrack is amazing, too.
Rating: Summary: A biting satire that works on so many levels Review: I'm a huge fan of films that realize they are in fact films and not a mirror of reality. Pumpkin fits snuggly into this category. This film is a clever satire on the cliche romantic comedy, the story of the little man getting the girl, the coming of age story, and of the perceived good life. Where this film triumphs is in its manipulation of the viewer. It plays on our stereotypes of not only the "mentally handicapped," but also on our perceptions of what life is like on the other side of the street, or our elite misconceptions. Nobody really lives the lives shown in the film except for in the environment of film. The film has a very timeless quality, which adds to the subtext of the film. When Christina Ricci turns to the camera at the end of the film, it's almost as if you're forced to place this film into a context of reality. It's really a great moment in a great film.On the surface, this film will make you laugh with its dark humor, and at times it will make you feel bad for laughing. The Music in the film is great, using songs from Belle and Sebastian and The Gentle Waves. Finaly, for those who are concerned by such things, Christina Ricci is mad hot in this movie.
Rating: Summary: The Andy Kaufman of movies Review: It is definitely not what it seems, about a sorority girl who falls in love with a Special Olympics teenager, begins to question her life, etc., although this only gradually become clear to me. Things just got too preposterous. It's obviously (or maybe not so obviously) a parody, but not just for laughs. It's much more subtle. It's about being able to present an unbelievable story with a straight face, and is interesting because it's so committed to that premise. And so careful to keep you guessing.
Rating: Summary: Same level as CATCHER IN THE RYE Review: I FEEL A CULT FOLLOWING COMING ON for this movie I just simply will not sit and let people bash this movie. It is the best story, best casting, best everything that i have taken in for a while. The movie i think, although, is wrongfully categorized. It is not a conventional comedy genre...i feel that it is more drama. This film so just reminded me of Catcher in The Rye; the way that the character, at all!, could not be given pity. She got herself into the mess...yet you understand that she meant well. This is the best story that i will ever know! Not one of the best, but THE best. Yes, i am proud to say that. Enjoy it the first time around, later on, examine it, it has so many levels, just like a poem (as aluded to in the film. You know how in fiction a unique character changes? Well in this one, en ensemble of charcters change. At first, its all about perfection for the people at the college, and at first, everything is loneley for the character of Pumpkin. The way in they learn how, there is more than one definition of "Perfect" pulls the whole story together and just demonstrates that this is the best film ever! I am sure that not a lot of people will agree....they shouldnt....just like in the movie...the word "perfection" is in the eye of the beholder...perfect could be in a form of so many ways. I FEEL A CULT FOLLOWING COMING ON for this movie
Rating: Summary: Hard to describe... (also re: "Bjork song" review) Review: Well, this is a hard one to describe... is it a comedy, is it a drama, is it tongue-in-cheek, or serious? I may recommend it simply because it was unusual. Also, it didn't hurt that there were a couple of songs in the flick that were really nice. One, mentioned below by another reviewer who mistakenly identified it as a Bjork song, was performed by Emiliana Torrini, called "If You Go Away". Really nice. Also some of the "score" from the film was beautiful, a little dark and sometimes inappropriate (in a good way - when you expect happy music, the film gives you beautiful but very dark music, for example, which adds an unexpected dimaneion to the mood). Anyway, there's my review for you. Unusual.
Rating: Summary: Still Thinking about it Review: I'm a fan of Ricci's and decided to rent Pumpkin. I'm still not so sure what exactaly the point was (and i really pick movies apart). Caroline McDuffy (Ricci) has a perfect life and then falls in love with Pumpkin a mentally challenged boy. She claims that he understands her...when really he didn't know anything about her. She just seemed to fall in love too fast and for no reason. We really didn't get to know Pumpkin at all either. The 60s fashions/traditions were a good move. I took it as a symbol for the lives the charcters were trying to live, although this took place in the present day. Ricci was great, and i actually laughed a lot. I would recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Bjork song? Review: I didn't mind the movie, I'm usually into suspense thrillers, but this movie wasn't bad. The song that's playing when she runs away to the tech school sounds like Bjork, and it's about going away or something. I was just wondering if anyone knew that song
