Summary: Movie surprised me
Review: This movie was not great, and I also knew not to take this movie serioulsy. I mean it is a comedy!!! Rock plays Alderman Gilliam who is about the people. He wants to help everyone, and he is determined to do so. He helps a lady save her cat from a building that is about to be demolished, and he is seen as a hero. He is also the perfect person to run for president and LOSE. He is made to say recycled speeches that don't mean anything to him, and not be himself. That is until he takes charge of saying what is truly in his heart and mind, and being himself. When the person he is running against tries to smear him, Gilliam challenges him to a debate that could make or break his chances at the white house. The movie surprised me. I actually liked it. Robin Givens played his girlfriend who wanted nothing to do with him, but once he was running for president she could not plan the wedding quick enough. SECURITY!!!! I was loved seeing her get snatched away by security. The movie is cute, and it's fun.

Summary: Better Than I Had Expected
Review: I wasn't expecting much from "Head of State". After reviews I had read when the film was first released, I was a little apprehensive about this one, but I thought, "Chris Rock and Bernie Mac are in it so it must be funny!" It was. Now, I was rolling on the floor laughing, but the film did have its moments. The film centers around Mays Gilliam (Rock) an alderman who is chosen to run for president when one of the original candidates is killed in plane crash. The reason Gilliam is chosen is because the party realizes that there is no way they are going to win. They just need someone to run and in four years, they'll put someone more experienced on the ballot. At first Gilliam goes along with the people who hired him, but soon he realizes that he needs to campaign his way. Thus begins many ups and downs in Gilliam's quest for the presidency. I would suggest this film to anyone who would like to have a good laugh. Fans of Chris Rock and Bernie Mac will definitely enjoy this comedy. However, Bernie Mac could have had more screen time as Gilliam's older brother. Check this one out!

Summary: Chris Rock, but Not at His Best
Review: Many times when one person takes it upon himself to fill too many roles in the creation of a film, the result is that everywhere he/she looks, he/she sees a reflection and nothing more. In this film, apparently that is what happened, with unfortunate results. As brilliant as Chris Rock is as a comedian, this film collapses under its own weight and does not do him credit.
Directed, written, and starring Chris Rock as Head of State, the film starts out as the saga of one not so impressive alderman Mays Gilliam. Although he cares about the people, he's no savvy politician. When he saves a woman from being blown up as her house is about to be demolished, he gains public recognition, just the recipe for party leaders to choose him to run for president after their candidates die in a plane crash. The plan is for him to lose the election.
Gilliam follows the instructions he receives from his campaign handlers Debra Lassiter (Lynn Whitfield) and Martin Geller (Dylan Baker)for a while. Eventually, he feels uncomfortable with what his handlers are doing and decides to be himself. He starts to run the show with his own brash manner. Because nobody else will associate with him, he chooses his bail bondsman brother (Bernie Mac) to be his running mate. Although the incumbent Vice President Brian Lewis (Nick Searcy) leads in the polls by a wide margin, Gilliam shifts his campaign into high gear and shows he means business.
When it comes to the women in the life of the man in the movie, this part of the movie is so formulaic as to be almost not worthy of mention, and it is a wonder that NOW did not demonstrate when the movie was aired because the film is so demeaning in this regard. First, there is the cute darling sensible girl, Tamala Jones (Lisa Clark) who is the good girl whose love is true. There is the shallow girl, Kim (Robin Givens), who wants the guy only if there's some fame or money to be had. Then there the sexpot Nikki (Stephanie March), whose only function seems to be to keep the candidate from needing to go to a call girl. These women have all the depth of items that can be obtained from a vending machine, and that is how they are treated in the script. The script writing, on this score, is trivial in the extreme.
The film has its moments, but it is far from outstanding. Chris Rock is a brilliant comedian, but the film itself is incredibly lightweight. This is a film to rent, not to buy, and under no circumstances pay any overtime charges for it.

Summary: Brilliant political satire
Review: At the outset, let me say what I am: I am white, 61 years old, a physician, and I live in a gated community. It would be easy for people like me to dismiss "Head of State" as just another crass commercial rip-off by Hollywood. It's not that at all.
The premise underlying "Head of State" is that Americans are currently represented by a government totally out of touch with the lives of ordinary citizens. That's why this film can be so hilarious, why it strikes such a responsive chord.
"Head of State" is more than just another comedy, more than just a parody of our political process. It is brilliant political satire, studded with remarkable insights into the political process. Yes, I laughed all the way through the film. But if Mays Gilliam ever comes to real life in America, I won't be laughing at him. I'll be voting for him. And so will the country.

Summary: Where's the soundtrack?
Review: The movie was great--I've been a Chris Rock fan for years--but the soundtrack totally rocks! When is it going to come out on CD? Also, I'd like to find credits for the performers--I checked the IMDb and the Website for the movie, but found nothing.
I hope somebody who's somebody reads this and gets the soundtrack out soon!

Summary: Watch It Over and OVER!
Review: This movie makes you laugh constantly! Bernie Mack is at his best! The entire cast is a nice compliment to Chris Rock because they all have energetic roles. I got so cought up in this movie that I immediately went on-line to order it when it became available! the music in this movie just kept you bouncin. I'm still trying to find the SOUNDTRACK! WHERE'S THE SOUND TRACK!!!

Summary: A fun political comedy
Review: Maybe one reason I actually did like this movie was because I wasn't expecting all that much. So remember, if you see this movie expect a stinker and be disappointed by what is handed to you.
Chris Rock plays Mays Gilliam who is asked to run as the presidential candidate for an unknown party (my guess: Republicans) after the original candidate suddenly dies in plane crash and is expected to loose, but hopefully put the party ahead for the next major election.
Mays Gilliam starts by saying what the party wants him to stay but turns things upside down when he starts to speak his mind about the issues that he really cares about. But is it enough to get him ahead and into the White House?
Surprisingly, I found this movie witty and funny. I was actually laughing at many parts of this movie. I didn't find this as good as "Dave" with Kevin Kline, and I did find some moments a lot more irreverent and less insprirational, but I did like it in the end. If you are looking for a laugh, pick this movie up. But don't pick this up if you are looking for something realistic.
