Summary: PURE BRILLIANCE
Review: People seem to be obsessed with comparing this movie to the Truman Show, why? The two movies are completely different, the only similarity being the voyeuristic element of both films. I didn't really enjoy the Truman Show whereas EDTV is a real pleasure. Basically its just a good ol' fashion love story (but not soppy) in a more than plausible setting. There is a good cast, with Mathew McConaughey giving his best performance yet. The movie is funny but also dramatic and thought provoking. You become very involved with this film, almost to the extent where you believe it is reality which I guess lays testament to the quality of the movie. If you're looking for something fresh and light hearted then this film is for you.

Summary: Alas, what could have been...
Review: Pleasantville and The Truman Show aside, EDtv was a movie whose time had come, but what could have been a true examination of what our fame-crazed society is like became just another sitcom. And the building blocks were all there to make this a better movie, as the excised scenes available on DVD clearly indicate. EDtv could have had something that it truky needed - an edge. An entire sub-sub-plot about a copycat TV program was taken out, and I think the finished film was poorer for it. People would have left the theatre talking about the film instead of wondering where they paarked the car.

However, the film is not without its charms. The cast is up tot he task, the casting of media-plagued celebrities is inspired but not intrusive, and the overall effect is not unplesaant. This is only a two star movie, though.

Still, I give the DVD version an extra star because of the extras. The outtakes are funny once, the Making of Featurette is of passable interest, but no other DVD in my experience has been as rich and unstinting in deleted scenes. Not since the legendary recalled version of Little Shop of Horrors has an audience had this kind of opportunity to see what might have been.

Now if only there was an easy way to re-edit the film myself...

Summary: You want "reality TV"?
Review: Released a little while after 'The Truman Show', this movie invites comparisons. I suspect for many people, Ed will come off second best to Truman. For my money, this is the better of the two.

In 'EDtv', a cable channel decides to feature the ultimate in 'reality TV' - they will put one person's life on TV 24 hours a day. They hold a contest, and Ed gets selected even though he didn't apply (his brother did). So what will this video store clerk do now that he is famous and a part of many people's lives?

A movie about public life and private voyeurism, it works essentially because of a good script and good work by the cast. Matthew McConaughey, who plays Ed, does so in such a way as to be an endearing dork, the sort of person who can be unbelievably embarrassing to know but who you can't help loving and forgiving his many failings - at least until the next embarrassing moment. Despite good performances by Jenna Elfman and Woody Harrelson, I must say that the supporting character I enjoyed best is Al, Ed's stepfather, played in a wonderfully understated way by Martin Landau.

But the whole movie is populated by minor characters who, even with their small amount of screen time, are very alive and the whole cast should be congratulated. (Now, if the lead characters in some other movies were only half as engaging...)

A very good use of two hours of your time.

Summary: Funny, but not as inspiring as "Truman Show"
Review: So many similarities between this and "Truman" make it worth a peek. Lacks the same level of human emotion but still good fun for anybody looking for a way out of life.

Review: This is a really funny and really great movie. All the actors do their best and it comes out great. It's about a regular guy named Ed(Matthew McConaughey) who gets hired by a fading TV station to be the star of a show. He is to have his life recorded. With quarrels with his older brother, relationships with girls (Jenna Elfman and Elizabeth Hurley), and the meeting and death of his real father make this a movie. It's an awesome and funny movie. Even Ellen DeGeneres is funny. I don't want to spoil the rest of the movie for you but it is great. Buy it or rent it but you will love it. It's awesome!

Summary: If you've got two hours of your life to waste....
Review: This is no Truman Show, folks. It is a poor crack at the same genre. The idea behind it was intriguing, and I have seen a few Ron Howard films that have been very good, ("Apollo 13", for example), so it was quite a letdown. Fear not, Jim Carrey.

Review: This movie got sand bagged by the Truman Show.

Summary: On-target! Best of the 15 MINUTES OF FAME flicks!
Review: This movie is a leap forward in the direction that so many movies have been trying to go for the last couple of years, among them Truman Show and Pleasantville, but none come close to EdTV. It's funny and savage and compassionate and devastating. By showing the "real-time" reactions of the audience, it brings a needed dimension of involvement. We have seen the enemy & it's us, Culture of Vultures. The acting is first-rate, especially McConaughey, Elfman & Landau. Here's hoping Ron Howard, Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel continue making movies for another 50 years or more!
