Summary: SCREWBALL ANTIWAR SATIRE..
Review: From the outrageous name "Fielding Mellish" to the screwball humor in this MAD-magazine type antiwar satire, this is one for the Best of Woody pile. The film grabs you from the first gag, and never lets go. It is laugh-out-loud hillarious with whacky situational scenes as a simple NYC boy gets embroiled in a rebellion in a small South American country (the rebels did not have a good tailor though, but couldn't wait). I was surprised to see a very young pre-fame Sylvester Stallone in a minor side role as a subway crook. The denouement of the movie is somewhat of a let-down (it may be me) but that's no reason to miss out on this superb comedy.

Review: High camp Woody Allen that plays like a crude film smuggled in from over the border where people don't laugh. Woody and the dead posturing soldiers is my favorite bit.

Summary: The only DVD I've ever thrown away
Review: I bought this DVD because of the genuinely funny picture of Allen in his Castro outfit on the cover. Believe me, that's the biggest laugh you're gonna get from this clunker. It appears to have been shot on Super-8 by a rank amateur and the waaaay dated humor (sorry, Howard Cosell is NOT funny) falls as flat as a set of Firestone tires. If this is funny, then I'm Groucho Marx. Not just bad, but incredibly bad. I was embarrassed to watch it -- and I was alone! This one begged for a one-way ticket to the nearest landfill. I was happy to oblige.

Summary: Bananas not only captivated me, but killed me....
Review: i cannot believe this movie has not made it into the halls of all high schools and retirement homes! not only does woody do his greatest work that comes closest to a marx/chaplin tribute, he does it with smarts! covering an issue at the time, he successfully demonstrates what a comedy is really supposed to do: teach and hurt the viewer's side.

Summary: Hilarious
Review: I'm a big Woody fan so it's hard for me to relate to those who can't stand him, but this is one hilarious film and I've seen it dozens of times. Sure, it's got the production values of a home movie and there are some head-scratchingly stupid jokes, but there are also more memorable belly laughs than in all Adam Sandler's movies combined.

Summary: Quiero la Noche
Review: If you love Woody Allen, you'll love this movie. The sheer wit and sardonic humour makes me laugh till my stomach aches. There are many immortal lines like when the dictator says, "I've been poisoned so many times, I've developed an immunity." I used to know a spook who said the very same thing. The satire on Communism, Dictatorship and Fidel Castro is hilarious! Woody's girl is the typical pinko liberal who lusts after rich, powerful and famous men. The classic scene is where Woody as the guerilla leader robs a sandwich shop to feed his men. And when Woody practices grenade throwing, he holds the live "pineapple" grenade and throws away the pin with ludicrous results. Finally, when the government is overthrown, the leader of the guerillas goes bananas and says, "L'etat c'est moi" which translated means "I am the State". When it comes to dictators, that's what they all say. I love the meaningful theme song, "Quiero la Noche" It means I like the night in Spanish. Enjoy! By Dr. Michael Lim the Travelling Gourmet

Summary: Pithy? Yeth!
Review: In the interest of full disclosure, I'll say that I enjoy Woody's verbal wit more than his clownishness. That being said, Fielding Mellish is one funny clown. He is a drop-out, working in a dead-end job, who somehow (actually, it's quite feasible) becomes the leader of a resistance in a fictional Latin-American country. All this to prove his love to Louise Lasser.There are some fine comic moments here: the crucifixes dueling over a parking spot; ordering grilled-cheese sandwiches and coleslaw for 1000 rebels; Woody the lawyer questioning Woody the defendant; and of course the bookend Howard Cosell scenes. It's all a great satire on fascism, rebellions, sexual politics, consumer culture, and the age of television. Great early Woody!

Summary: Woody at his funniest
Review: In this movie we find unscroupulas Fielding Melish (Woody Allen) involved in a South American reveloution and chasing Nancy (Louise Lasser). As he bungles around getting into trouble as a soldier we meet the movies laughs and a good thing is the end is funny unlike most movies. I have to admit it's not Woody's best movie since I haven't seen some of his others but way better than Sleeper.

Summary: Screwball Comedy At Its Best
Review: In this political satire Fielding Mellish (Woody Allen) down on his luck tries to win back the heart of Nancy (Louise Lasser) who dumps him after a brief relationship because he "was not leader enough". He then travels to the tiny country of San Marcos to see what conditions were like, getting caught in the middle of a political quagmire and, by popular demand, becoming a leader of that country, and also ending up on the FBI's blacklist. ABC's Wide World of Sports is clearly represented with the likes of Howard Cosell, Roger Grimsby and Don Dunphy who play themselves, creating a spoof of a play-by-play event of the assassination of San Marcos' president and the victory of dictator General Vargas (Carlos Montalban). Mellish gets involved in a silly coup d'etat in order to help guerilla leader Esposito oust Vargas.
This is also the film where Sylvester Stallone makes his filming debut playing a small part as a subway thug. From "Orgasm" to cigarette ads, this is a video that is well-suited to any Woody Allen fan.

Summary: Yipes!
Review: It seems that all of you really love this film, but I feel that it is the weakest Woody Allen ever. Yeah, Take the Money and Run and Sleeper were funny, but Bananas is such an un-focused film. The timing is off, and the characters are weak. Don't get me wrong, I love Woody Allen, but it feels as if he tried to put the same gags from Take the Money and Run onto another plot. If only the timing was better and the whole thing was more focused.
