Summary: I really wish there were 4 1/2 stars.
Review: This is a great comedy with Jim Carrey in it. It is probably his darkest comedy. The only flaw was, well, there were no flaws, but I just like Jim Carrey when he is more cheerful. There are some hilarious references to other movies in this movie, and thre is a classic seen in which Carrey and Broderick must fight to the "death" in a midevil-times themed resterant. If you liked the Mask and Ace Ventura 2, you might not understand the whole concept of this movie, spend your money on Liar Liar instead. I myself like every single one of Carrey's movies, but some people only like about half of his movies.

Summary: I think the director has been smoking crack!
Review: I'm not joking! this movie is so dumb. What is the point. How about the plot? If you want to learn what happens to you if you smoke crack, watch this movie. It is about some guy who works on cable. That is all I can say. I didn't understand this movie at all. He was a wakko guy obsessed with tv. Wow! that certainly was a big hit, NOT! If you have money to burn, and need to know what you might end up like if you take drugs, Watch this movie.

Summary: Excellent Dark Comedy!
Review: If you are a fan of Jim Carrey, check this flick out but be careful if you are expecting goof-ball humor. Carrey plays the lead character seriously enough to make him believeable without becoming boring or getting too silly. I feel this movie warrants repeat viewings to make you really appreciate it. Broderick plays the unwitting friend well & Ben Stiller has a small but hilarious cameo. This movie is worth seeing just for the Medieval Times & Porno Password scenes. In the end, the movie honestly portrays how a lot of lonely people must feel and how even the scariest psycho just wants a friend. The quality of the picture is good & it is anamorphic. Unfortunately there are no extras on this disc (not even a trailer). The sound is 5.1 Dolby Digital and it is crisp & clean. Not a lot of use of the surrounds due to the nature of the film. Maybe one day we will see a special edition (but don't hold your breath).

Summary: Cable Guy's An Upgrade For Carrey
Review: This isn't Jim Carrey's best performance but it's hands down his funniest. He plays the role of 'Chip Douglas' with such melevolent brilliance that it's a wonder why it took the keen eye of Peter Weir to realize his potential. It's one of those rare occurances where a movie can be both frightening and funny at the same time. But it's Broderick's wonderfully offbeat performance that gets the bulk of the laughs. His reactionary shots are so hysterical it's hard to believe anybody else in the role, though I would've been curious to see Ben Stiller step out from behind the camera and give it a go. Stiller reunites with cast members of his short-lived FOX TV comedy series "The Ben Stiller Show" including Janeane Garofalo (in maybe the funniest bit performace ever!) and Andy Dick. Another standout in a small part belongs to Owen Wilson whose gone on to celebrity with roles in Shaghai Noon and The Minus Man. All the elements come together and form one of the funniest comedies in years.

Summary: Most Underated Carrey Film But The DVD Is Lacking In Extras!
Review: If you don't understand The Cable Guy, then you don't get Jim Carrey, whose performance in this film is highly underrated. I saw this film twice in theaters and before DVD came out, bought the laserdisc to view it in the original Widescreen 2:35.1 aspect ratio. Perhaps it was too creepy for the masses, but I saw it as a very surreal look into living life through your TV. I really felt for this guy. The fact that he didn't have a father and his mother was basically a lush, affected his social skills to the point of becoming TV cliche's and losing his true identity in the process. I don't think he even knew his real name to tell you the truth. People keep criticizing the beating in the bathroom. I just don't get why. It's easy to understand why he did it. To him, Steve is his best friend and he wants to help him out. He knows Steve wants Robin, so what does he do? In his own psychotic way, he's making sure no one tries to steal her away from Steven, thereby making sure she comes back to him and in that thinking, he figures Steve will want to be his friend even more. It's crazy, I know, but, then again, so is the character, and that's why it works. I mean, he's following Steven around (stalking). The basketball court scene, for instance (you didn't actually believe he comes there all the time did you?) is the perfect example. Just how long was he stalking him before he followed him there? This is a guy desperate for human contact because, in the end, people need people. I really understood that about this film, especially when Steven says to him, "Everybody gets lonely" and he replies, "Yeah, but I get really lonely," and presumedly jumps to his death onto the huge satellite dish. It's dark humor at it's finest because it really grabs you, makes you laugh and then lets you really think hard about what our society is based on as far as values and tolerable living conditions. Take another look, it's there. But the DVD is lacking in Special Features. I mean, for crying out loud, with all the Special Edition's being released (Feeling Minnesota? ) you'd think Columbia/TriStar could find the time to release one of The Cable Guy. I could sure go for a nice audio commentary with Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller. And how 'bout deleted scenes and outakes (there must be tons of em) music videos (Hey Man, Nice Shot by Filter (basketball scene)) and a making of featurette. Basically everything you get on the Collector's Edition of Liar Liar (by Universal Pictures). Let me also add that it's the only Jim Carrey movie they own. So let's get it out there. And remember...."The name is Spock. If we do not fight to the death, they will kill us both. Goodbye Jim."

Summary: Dark Carrey
Review: If you are used to Jim Carrey falling down and making goofy faces, skip The Cable Guy. I LOVE this movie and think it is one of Carrey's BEST. 9 out of 10 people i know say they "hated" The Cable Guy. I dont understand it, you have to appreciate how talented Carrey is. Even though he plays a psycho loner character, you really have to watch closely to all his body language. I still watch this movie about once a month and crack up. I recommend it to anyone who likes Jim Carrey for his talent and not his "slap-stick" comedy. (though there are few people like this)

Summary: Ahead of its time
Review: Along with This Is Spinal Tap and the more recent Election, Cable Guy is one of the most original movies of the late 20C. In scene after scene it somehow manages to be both wild and controlled, hitting the sweet spot of the absurd: the bizzare Karaoke party and aftermath, the riotous Medieval Times/Star Trek evening, and even the too-edgy-for-some restaurant bathroom humiliation scene.The pacing and characterization are excellent as is the acting of the two main protagonists; Carry gives the performance of his career (it's hard to imagine anyone else being anything like as good in the role) and straight man Matthew Broderick (so underrated) is the perfect foil. The film flopped with Carry's hard core fans - and others - because of the low expectations inherent in such an audience. The average movie goer is in search of comfort and distraction - bite sized pieces of mediocrity to chomp down with his popcorn.I read a piece by a Carrey fan a week or so ago who picked his favorite moments from the actor. He hated CG of course but choose one scene he did like: it was the movies one off-key note, the Porno Password scene!

Summary: Too much of anything isn't necessarily a good thing
Review: Prior to the hugely successful "Liar Liar", Jim Carrey made the darkly funny "Cable Guy". It was a big disappointment at the box office and most critics dismissed it, but I think it's one of Carrey's best films. Mathew Broderick stars opposite Carrey as Steve. As the movie opens Steve's just broken up with his girlfriend and is moving into a new apartment. Carrey plays the title character, a lisping psycho who worms his way into Steve's life after installing his cable. Carrey doesn't have any friends, just "preferred customers", and he's soon all over Steve (who is somewhat vulnerable), terrorizing his friends, and finally taking over his life. What I like about "Cable Guy" is that, unlike previous Carrey vehicles, this one has some ideas. In a flashback we learn that TV is a poor substitute for loving parents when we see Carrey's mother trotting off to a bar, leaving the young kid alone with the television, which mom refers to as the "babysitter". There's a nice little message about the dehumanizing effects of TV and what a friend of mine calls "second-hand living". At the same time, the movie is a comedy and I enjoyed trying to catch all the obscure references Carrey's constantly making to old TV shows. In one terrific scene, at a "Medieval Times" restaurant, the pair play out a battle that references a specific scene in a "Star Trek" episode, that even goes so far as to include the same background music. And if you know that, you're probably watching far too much TV.

Summary: Jim Does Dark Comedy as well as the Sun Rises in the Morning
Review: Admittedly, I am a wild fan of Jim Carrey, the man is quite the comedic genius...yeah, he can assume the form of "slapsticky", but this film was highly under-regarded as far as the subtle "poke in the face" at our TV Land American society which now lives and dies for the flickering of cheap entertainment (unfortunately, a vast number of so-called films are included under this category--excluding the Cable Guy!)...its truly a tragedy that parents use the "tube" as a babysitter... My roommate and I loved The Cable Guy so much, I took her to Medieval Times as a surprise for her Birthday-I blindfolded her and replayed the MT scene between Carrey and Broderick (via an audio recording) as a "hah hah"...I'm not usually one to do something as prompted by Hollywood (I do not need to, my life's a dramedy of its own accord)--but this one was worth it... And for the record, so far, Man on the Moon is one of Jim Carrey's finest films....you ROCK Jim! Slan agat.

Summary: It deserved the credit it got
Review: I didn't like this movie. It wasn't really that funny, and it was just too dark many times to be a good comedy. Jim Carrey's talent was squandered and he came off as a loser, rather than a comedian. He did an excellent job with his character, but in the end it was just a boring movie that could have stood for a makeover. Ben Stiller's a funny guy, but it sort of fell flat here.
