Summary: Neglected masterpiece is Spacey's best
Review: Frank Whaley is ostensibly the star of this blackest of comedies but it's Kevin Spacey who steals the show. His performance as Buddy Ackerman - heartless Hollywood powerbroker behind "ball-shaking" action blockbusters - will have you cringing and crying with laughter at the same time. But it isn't all gags, or at least its gags have a higher purpose - and that's the real genius of this film. Beneath the heinous abuse and delightful revenge, George Huang has delivered a tightly written commentary on how the "career vs. creativity" struggle can torture even the most well-intended innocent into a shape he would scarcely recognise. And its satire on the politics of power doesn't only apply to Hollywood. The manipulations and humiliations, at least in spirit, will be familiar to office workers everywhere. This is a terrific movie, which perhaps suffered by being released almost simultaneously with Spacey's breakthrough films - "Seven" and "The Usual Suspects". Had it been released a year or two later, I can't help thinking Spacey would have earned an Oscar for it and dragged George Huang's wonderful screenplay to the podium with him. Or perhaps Hollywood isn't quite ready to reward a film which tells it like it is.

Review: I think this is Spacey's best work, and it's the movie that made me a fan of his. If you're a Spacey fan or you like odd/dark comedies, then this movie is definiately for you! Don't pass this one up.

Summary: stay away... third-grader wrote the script
Review: It's awkwardly written ... acted by people who didn't make the first cut at 'One Life to Live' (ok, except Spacey). I didn't realize it was listed as a comedy as I did not laugh once in the movie. See when you have a world-class p**ck like Buddy Ackerman in a movie it is only funny for the audience when the person Buddy is humiliating (Guy) gets to exact some kind of non-lethal revenge on Buddy. Think of the stuff that Dabney Coleman's character in "9 to 5" had to endure. It's funny when the audience can relate to doing the funny things that Dolly Parton did, etc., etc. ("Oh, yeah. I can see doing that!") We only see Guy spit into a cup of coffee once. So we see him get humiliated, spit into some coffee, and then torture his boss. Serious comic disconnect here if that's what the writers intended (and it ain't working as 'dark' comedy either).Couple that with every other horrid acting job (Spacey gets an excuse under what I call "Hackman's Axiom": the film may be bad, but hey Hackman was good in it!) and a stupid "twist" ending and some very poorly written dialogue and you get a clunker of film. Summary: Side Splittingly Funny
Review: In 1994 this little movie didn't exactly storm the world. However after Kevin Spaceys hard hitting roles in Se7en and The Usual Suspects more people began to take note. This hilarious film has some of the funniest insults ever put on to the screen. Frank Whaley is a very underated actor but is probably most memorable for his part as Brett in Pulp Fiction. This film is chock-a-block of great performances and really great writing and direction. Be sure to be paying full attention during the "Sweet and Low" scene, absolute classic. And my Oh my, what a twist.

Summary: Don't be fooled
Review: Some places stick this movie in the comedy section. If this is comedy than it's as dark as they can get. Spacey is pleasing as the boss from hell, but Whaley, portraying the youngster trying to make it in hollywood, isn't too convincing. This isn't a normal film by any standards, and some parts are painful too watch. But somehow this film works, if only partially, as a satirical look at hollywood.

Summary: Great movie
Review: I just saw this film on IFC channel last night. I am not sure I would pay to get it, but plot and character of this movie is very rich. I really enjoyed seeing how Kevin Spacey do some trerrific acting as being some big boss executive with ego. Whole movie was entertaining and twisted that I could not wait to see what happens next through entire movie. Black movie at it's best. I strongly recommend to people to rent this movie instead of purchasing it.

Summary: Something of a cult film
Review: This film is too abrasive for the common throng, but it has a perverse addictive quality to it. I do have a question though: How come the British release of this DVD comes with a commentary track from the director - and I love commentary tracks - and the US version doesn't? Why do they get the goodies and we don't?

Summary: Great movie! Spacey in one of his best.
Review: Suppose you want to make it big in Hollywood? You start at the bottom. Pander to the tempermental whims of a movie executive, sell one's soul, and give up your personal life. This move is a light hearted view of what's required to make it in Hollywood, written from the experiences of the director (Huang). Spacey's personality remarkably pairs with the role he plays. The movie ends with an interesting twist. After "American Beauty", I believe this is Kevin's best.

Review: Kevin Spacey is great as usual. Spacey always brings a great underline humour to his characters and he dosen't fail to bring it here. The picture that is painted about work environment is very scary but very realistic. There are sharks out there!
