Rating: Summary: A great movie that isn't afraid to tweak noses... Review: As with Monty Python's "Life of Brian," "Dogma" came under a lot of fire because it dealt, utilizing tongue-in cheek humor, with that most sacred cow: Organized religion. Dogma" is a brilliant film that DOES NOT MAKE FUN OF GOD, but rather asks uncomfortable questions regarding the organizing of a belief structure (As the 13th apostle says in the movie, "It's not a matter of who's right or wrong; none of them have got it exactly right.") As an atheist, I found this movie asking a lot of questions I ask, but instead of tearing down any belief structure, "Dogma" actually gives answers that would seem to make God more accessable. Okay, the humor can be raunchy or juvenile at times, but in the end it is a thought-provoking movie that isn't afraid to ask questions and take on various belief-structures. And this Special Edition DVD is packed with a lot of deleted scenes that help to answer a lot of the questions that might have remained (like "Who are those three kids?"), along with poking a lot of fun at itself. Get this movie!
Rating: Summary: Yes, you have to think. Review: If you are a fan of funny, well filmed movies that make you think, you will enjoy this movie. If you take yourself or movies in general too seriously, skip this movie and watch something else. The acting is first rate (and I am not normally a fan of several of the actors in this movie), the dialogue is crisp and witty, and the movie is artistically filmed with an expert hand. The caveat, however, is that close-minded people should watch this at their own risk; it might force them to think in new ways.
Rating: Summary: Great Writer.... Please Find a Guy Who Can Shot It. Review: I think Dogma once again proves the genius and the disaster that is Kevin Smith. I can't imagine being able to write great and interesting dialogue like Smith's. In fact, the best part is that Smith's actors have finally caught up with his abilities. I have tough time watching Clerks because the delivery is a half beat off as if I'm watching the videotape of me playing Albert in Bye Bye Birdie in Eighth grade. Unfortunately, I want to talk to Kevin Smith and say to him please, please try only writing one. The editorial comment by Amazon could not be more correct about his defects as a director actually shooting the movie. He appears to stage and shot everything in two dimensions, as if drawing a line in the sand that no one may cross over until we go to the next scene...perhaps the idiots in Hollywood are under-funding his work so films is a precious commodity, but I think he is the only one who still thinks it. Overall, I loved the movies plot and dialogue. I think it pretty original, and whatever isn't has been made sufficiently Smithian as to make it feel like it is. I also have to say that I want to see more of Jason Leigh. This guy has made a Career from Smith and I would love to see him not be relegated to funny sidekick status and see if we could have just a film with him trying to move the story. This movie is great if you are in on a rainy day and want to laugh. I don't recommend it if you are looking to be simply stimulated by pictures. I can recommend Pearl Harbor for that or many other blank and pretties. This movie is for someone who has the time to sit down, listen and laugh a lot.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking and laugh inducing Review: Despite the anti-catholic/anti-religion hype, this film is definitely worth watching, whatever your beliefs. I mean let's face it, most stand ups take the mick out of God, and tell all about their beliefs, and how many people make a fuss about that? Anyone who finds serious offense at the religious stuff in this film really shouldn't be watching it in the first place. <If you haven't seen it yet, please do so.> And if you're offended by anything else, (Jay's swearing did get a bit O.T.T. I thought.) well, just don't watch it again. The second DVD in this pack is certainly worth checking out, outtakes, cast info, blatant advertising of Jay & Bob merchandise, and more deleted footage than comprised the final film, (Several are extended versions of scenes from the film) one scene in particular, where we find out a bit more about Bethany's character, is particularly moving. Much of the extra footage was included in the Dogma Screenplay, so if you've read this, you'll know pretty much what to expect. Some people might think it a shame that none of the cut footage was put back into the film as a sort of 'Director's cut', but as Kevin Smith points out, he didn't really want a three and a half hour movie.
Rating: Summary: Alanis Morsette... god??? Review: The movie is done well, with it's brilliant screenwriter. It's the most comercial of his movies, so far. Even though it has it's wonderful parts (SB&J are brilliant funny actors, Ben Affleck & Matt Dillion are in it as well, but I think they just had them in it to make it more successful), it did better than it deserved. All his other movies, like CLERKS, were completely brilliant. But that is a far cry from this one. I mean I enjoyed it some but I didn't respect it. Come on the villians were angels and hockey players. BUt I still liked it. And it was pretty cool that GOD was a woman, Alanis Morsette. The movie starts out great and then just gets stupid. WARNING: it's a joke movie, have fun and don't take it seriously. It's probabaly recommended for non-christians and people who like Chasing Amy & Clerks (if you haven't seen those, see 'em.)
Rating: Summary: Do your self a favor, stay away!!! Review: I hardly ever write reviews here, but when this awful movie appeared like a lurking demon to the left of my monitor I knew something had to be done. This movie was so bad that I walked out about 5 minutes before it ended at the theater. The only advantage to it on DVD is that it can be destroyed. If you like movies with terrible scripts, not-funny toilet humor, bad acting, poor direction, etc, then you MIGHT find this tolerable. How anybody could like this travesty is beyond me.
Rating: Summary: Dogma is a pure pleasure to see over and over again Review: I loved Clerks, which I hail as Kevin Smith's finest work to date. However, a close second in my opinion is, without a doubt, Dogma. From the starting disclaimer to the whimsical scenes with God finishing out the film, I was totally moved by this movie. Its deep, yet funny; I originally thought that Jay & Silent Bob (a staple throughout Smith's movies) would be out of place in a religious setting - I was totally wrong! I could see the scene with Cardinal Glick (portrayed by George Carlin) introducing the "Buddy Christ" over and over again with the same amount of laughter. The extra material, which I've been waiting ever so patiently for, is great as well. Look for the "Bethany Boo Hoo" scene - one which should've made the final cut. I did, however, find it somewhat of a relief that some scenes were deleted (the s**t demon / hospital scene was a perfect example). I'm overly impressed with this special edition. I look forward to the summer release of "The Return of Jay & Silent Bob".
Rating: Summary: IN GOD WE TRUST Review: Director Kevin Smith's latest DVD (re)release is just great! Before I get into all of that though I would like to say a word or two about the film itself. The controversy that swirls around this film seems a bit silly. In my opinion, films about religion serve to stir the pot and make people think, and any fillm that makes waves, is a good thing. Another thing is that the movie brings to light a lot of the problems with organized religion with a humorous slant. In my mind, it no more or less offensive than say, THE LAST TEMTATION OF CHRIST. It is jist one film maker's view and he or she has a right to express that view. OK enough soapbox, this very funny film has a lot going on. The best performances come from Affleck and Damon, who as two angels outcast from heaven, have a certain amount of glee in their roles that is fantastic. The two seem to relish the chance to play characters very different from any they have played before Alan Ricknan is also tops as the "voice of GOD" All of this and Jay and Silent Bob too! The commentaries are well done and never boring! The stand-out extras though are the deleted scenes and outtakes-all howlingly funny-just great. The set does have one big drawback It is without the great "In Defense Of Dogma" documentary due to another "controversy". C'mon folks! Lighten up will ya! Fans WILL love the 2 disc set If you never saw the film, give it a shot before passing final judgment
