Review: LOL...Aww man this is 1 of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. It's better than Austin Powers, I think. I rented this one day when I was sick & it cheared me up bigtime! It was so funny & entertaining. Though I could see why people would be offended by this. It was really offensive to Catholic Religion. But still, even though I'm Catholic, I was able to lighten up & enjoy this funny funny comedy. Some of the performances are the funniest parts of it. Ben Aflect & Matt Damon have some hilarious dialoge. All the actting was great I think, it was over the top, and I think it needed to be for this film. Go rent this one now!

Summary: Even the Angels are Confused and Angry about Religion !
Review: Well, this is certainly an appropriate movie to purchase for Xmas, with all the Crazy blood-shed in the Holy Land.... Wow, perfect timing. Makes you wonder if Jay and Silent Bob truly are Prophets.... This time, they brought in Chris Rock (the Thirteenth Apostle!) --that, alone, should make you want to snag this one up and journey with our heroes on a quest to save humanity from annihilation. This film combines the usual comical exchanges between Jay and Silent Bob, with a very theological and compelling soul journey....spiced with heroic gestures of humanitarianism (or attempts to get laid?). The scenes of Angels interacting with mere mortals were absolutely priceless! I love the airport scene, with the Nun.... This is an irreverent movie, with Monty Pythonesque overtones, that you will watch again and again. You'd rent it so many times that you could have purchased a copy for an Xmas gift, for a friend...unless, you are a Grinch and buy another Jay-Bob flick, like "Mall Rats." They've come a long way, since "Clerks" & the budget for this movie must-have been fantastic. I did not expect the film to be so high-quality. Even the special effects were Tremendous. These guys are moving up in the world.... I wonder what Bob would say, if he won an Oscar, one day?

Summary: Total Junk!
Review: I guess maybe, with only a PhD, I'm not sophisticated enough. Reading the other reviews, I get the impression that I should have been paying attention to the hidden, deeper message of this movie. All that apparently went right over my head. I couldn't get past the incessant use of the F-word, and the concept of prophets of God whose main goal is to get a blow job. I found myself amazed that actors with the credentials of Damon and Affleck would allow themselves to be associated with such junk. I don't know the other actors (who seemed to be familiar to other reviewers), nor do I know the director. What I know now is whose works to avoid in the future.Jack

Summary: Wake me up when it's over.
Review: Looks like someone's let their ambiton get the best of him. This film is so F-ing boring and so F-ing unintersting that it just makes me wanna F-ing puke. Usually I like witty comentary on biblical subjects but for the love of god, I like HUMOROUS witty comentary, not comentary so long a drawn out that you forget what the hell they were talking about in the first place. Let's get one thing straight, movies are a forum for communicating ideas. Not giving an actor/actress three pages of dialog and saying "read this to the camera, cause this is what I think". That's what writers are for. I don't go to a movie to be told flat out what some jackass thinks about christianity. I go to be pursuaded and think, "oh, maybe he's got a point there." Kevin Smith is a direct product of the Hollywood mindframe. Apparently he believes that making previous movies of moderate fame gives him the right to make an opus of unintelligent hawgwash. Man, the ego on this guy. Kevin, if you're listening, go back to the low brow comedy of the past, and leave thought producing movies to real directors such as PT Anderson, or Joel/Ethan Coen. Definantly the worst thing to come out of 1999. Ciao Dave P.S. All those people that found this movie "entertaining", and "utterly delightfull" need to cut the BS, don't pretend like you get it just so you look somewhat witty and intelligent. I'm on to you.

Summary: FUNNY AS HELL...EVEN IF YOU ARE CATHOLIC
Review: Forget about any controvery, this movie is a laugh a minute. Being Catholic I was wary of this film, knowing the church was not too pleased with it. Having watched it once, I then bought the DVD. Granted, Smith takes some artistic license here. I doubt that there was a 13th apostle and I doubt that Jesus had brothers and sisters that we never heard about, but he uses his "theories" with amazing comedic effect. He also mixes in some poignant generaliztions about the faith that ring somewhat true (i.e. Salma Hayek "Catholics don't celbrate their faith , they suffer it) The cast in this flick is great. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are a couple of fallen angels looking for a loophole that will get them back into heaven. Damon is surprisingly relaxed and funny in his portrayal as the angel of death Loki. The only people that can stop them are Linda Florentino (the last zion), Rufus the unknown 13th black apostle, and Jay and Silent Bob (the prophets?). Chris Rock is hillarious as Rufus and Jay and Silent Bob are......well if you have ever seen a Kevin Smith movie you know they are good for some laughs. Other supporting cast include Salma Hayek (serendipity - wow, dont miss her dance scene!) and George Carlin(priceless as the cardinal). Overall the cast is fantastic although Linda Florentino was a little off on her timing. Watch this film with an open mind and you'll watch it again. If you are easily offended, don't even bother....let the rest of us enjoy it.

Summary: Kevin Smith mixes in with Tim Burton humor
Review: I must admit, before I saw the movie I was expecting a clerk, or a mallrat, or anything that has the classic Kevin Smith feel to it. After enjoying watching this flick, I was surprised. Kevin Smith boldly goes where no fart joke movie, or any other flick, has gone before-MAKING RELIGIONS FUNNY. Not an easy task if you could ask me. He makes us believe one thing when you come out of the movie-Religion is to be celibrated and not mourned. With a great script and superb acting, Dogma is one of the better releases I have seen in 1999. But honestly, director Kevin Smith is the real star. Having a daring impact in his career.

Summary: Heart in the Right Place
Review: Kevin Smith had the right idea for this flick, but the execution was off. Case and point: Linda Florentino. She's what keeps me from being able to watch the movie again and again -- with every eye-roll she executes in order to look sarcastic I wish for her to get hit by a bus more and more. Jay and Silent Bob feel old and tired, it's time for some new characters. Jason Lee and the Damon-Affleck duo are what makes the movie buyable. Especially Lee. He's a badass.

Summary: Dogma, a new start...or not
Review: This was another great movie by Kevin Smith. I was told it was suppossed to be new start for, a chance to get into something a little more serious. I wouldn't agree with that though. The film still contained characters like Jay and Silent Bob and had his usual cast of actors, Ben Affleck and Jason Lee, too. The movie was a rather refreshing look at religion though. It even made me, an atheist, a little curious, for about 5 minutes. Overal, I would recommend this to anyone who likes Kevin's work.

Summary: Ok, but not much to it...
Review: In the wake of such phenomal flicks as "Clerks," one would think that Kevin Smith would make a "smarter" movie thank this. Yes, I read the disclaimer at the beginning, but that doesn't excuse anyone from slap-n-dash writing. Kevin is smarter than this! I've seen/read interviews. Smith "attacks" selected points of Christian theology (mostly aimed at Roman Catholicism) but then borrows from other systems/mythologies at random. I guess that makes him thoroughly "post-modern." I love good satire, but this is muddled. If the point was to be self-indulgent and just "have fun" I guess he pulled it off. But if he was trying to anything above "Beavis and Butthead go to Church" then he needs to try again. There was real potential in the character of Bethany, but the story line fizzled at the end. The whole concept of the "voice of God" was fascinating, but, again, in the end it came out fuzzy. Yes, there are plenty of good one-liners, but we've seen this before. Kevin Smith's talent is better than this movie would lead you to believe.

Summary: Accessible, Controversial, Immaculate
Review: Definitely the best movie of 1999, and one of my all-time favorites. Kevin Smith is a blessing in the film industry, showing that there is hope in this Hollywood-run world. Dogma, on the surface, can be offensive to Catholics and Christans everywhere. But the satire is deep. The audience is asked to step out of their belief system for a couple hours and reflect--what kinds of things do we think and feel each day that are directly affected by religion (or lack thereof)? What degree of corruption can be tolerated and ignored? Kevin Smith is not telling the audience that religion is bad. He points out the truths of our lives, which can be the most painful and offensive to the person who does not want to reflect and think intelligently about religion. And to top it all off, the film is downright hilarious. The comedy lies in jokes (sex being the primary concern for Jay, at least) but mostly in Smith's perception of the world. As they say in imrovisational comedy, the truth is the funniest thing out there. Anyone who doesn't like this film the first time around should see it again. Chances are, with an open mind, you will realize how stupendous this movie is.
