Summary: Kevin Smith is talented, but this film is overrated
Review: When I saw Clerks, I thought here was a talented young voice that will come into his own, and after a stumble (Mallrats) he provided a flawed, but intreaguing movie (Chasing Amy). I looked forward to seeing his next movie, I kept an open mind when all the reviews came in. But after seeing this movie I have to say it is self-serving, pretentious, and badly written. I know this will undoubtebly enrage the many hordes of Kevin Smith fanboys, who worship his every fart joke and Star Wars reference. When I saw this movie, I felt I was watching a piece of comic book fan fantasy, ill concieved, and arrogantly at that. Of course people are going to get offended by this movie. not because it's "blasphemy" (which by the way I am SURE Kevin Smith knew he would offend some people), but because of the horrible script. The actors wander around in a daze, as if They know how ill-concieved this project was, but wanted the cache of having their name attached to this "hip" director. I know Kevin Smith will produce a masterpiece, this just isn't it.

Summary: Kevin Smith is my hero....
Review: I have yet to be disappointed by one of Kevin Smith's movies, and Dogma is no exception. Witty and irreverent, this is one of the year's greatest flicks. The characters are well-acted, the story is wonderful, and the timing of this cast is fantastic. I highly recommend this one, unless you are easily put off by religious jokes......but a must-see for all Kevin Smith fans out there. You will not be sorry!And yes, God is a woman. :)

Summary: Definitely for twentysomethings.
Review: While I am a fan of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and usually Alan Rickman, and was raised Catholic so I can appreciate some of the jokes, this is close to the worst movie I've ever seen. It gets one star because some of the performances are good, even if the story is dubious. Sorry twentysomethings. The poop monster was right out of South Park humor, or perhaps Beevis and Butthead-also not my favorites. And Alanis Morrisette as God? Please.

Summary: Very funny movie
Review: I think that overall, this movie was very funy. There were a few poorly done scenes, and the characters for the most part wear the same costumes for the entire movie, and that is the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars. Also, the first half of the movie was hilarious, but the second half wasnt as good, although it was still funny. If you dont know much about catholicism, you will have to watch this movie a few times to understand all of the jokes.

Summary: DVD with loads of extras!
Review: Got a look at this DVD from a friend of mine who receives plenty of pre-releases at Blockbuster. I am happy to say this is a great product. Like the "Scream 3" DVD, there is plenty of extras that almost go overboard in content since you are given almost 100 minutes of deleted scenes which make you scratch your head in confusion that so many of these scenes were deleted, some of them really skew the initial plot of the story. Highly imaginative and extremely funny, this film rides on plenty of surprises and gives the word "religion" a run for it's money. I really enjoyed this film although I was getting a little tired of hearing the f-word every two seconds. It does, however, make you think about your faith (if you have any) and takes a humorous look at the question of "what if." I am surprised people were so judgemental against this movie. Obviously the naysayers didn't actually see it because the very beginning credits give a humorous commentary on the directors position of the film and asks the audience blatantly "do not take this seriously!" With that said, the DVD is spectacular! Superior film to DVD transfer, the colors actually look better on the DVD! Commentaries are great but a little too many of them for my taste. I think one or two commentaries are fine for a DVD but when it gets to be 3 or 4, well, you get the picture. It's simply too much. This DVD definately has a lot of offer! For those of you who have taken this movie seriously-shut your mouth and get a sense of humor-QUICK!

Summary: Kevin Smith's Masterpiece
Review: Any true Kevin Smith fan will recognize this as his funniest and best made film to date. The storyline is well thought out and flows at a hilarious pace. Affleck and Damon are great in their roles of Bartleby and Loki. The strong storyline for Jay and Silent Bob is perfect for this film. As long as you can view this film as just a story and not a slander of religous dogma,which was not it's intention, you will love it!

Summary: Dogma- Special edition
Review: I have been waiting for this one almost a year now, Dogma was one of the best movies I saw last year. I wanted to purchase this DVD when it first came out but heard about a special edition coming out in the fall (October or November) but nothing showed up. This is the first I've heard of it in a long time. I will definatly be getting it at the end of January when it is now sceduled to be released. If you don't own Dogma and are thinking of purchasing it WAIT!, the version out now has nothing special on it. The special edition might be late coming out but it is so jammed pack with extras it will be worth the wait.

Summary: Know something about Christianity before viewing
Review: I recommend this for renting. The DVD has decent picture and sound quality. There are no super special extras, but for some strange commercial reason there's an additional trailer for another film. There is also a small print film bio on the film's large principal cast. Get you bifocals ready. Basically an okay film, but busy, busy, busy. Lots of scenes in lots of places. Lots of dialogue in each scene. Each scene contains crucial bits of information. There are even characters who don't/can't talk...and they're important for the scenes they're in. The film has numerous biblical (essentially Catholic) references which may be lost on the casual churchgoer. The cast is large with some actors (Garafola) relegated to essentially one scene. There are no real plot twists, but the talking goes on and on and on in an effort to explain the plot rather than...acting perhaps... Pointless killings including stabbings, shootings and the obligatory exploding head, are sprinkled through the film...for what? The language is foul and the feces monster is just unnecessary. Affleck and Damon really have great screen chemistry which makes their final scenes together unbelievable. Alan Rickman is funny, Chris Rock is not...go figure. Curvy Salma Hayek shakes her "groove thang" then is saddled with biblo-babble, which she pulls off with some grace. Again, an okay flick, but you may want to rent the DVD rather than buy.

Summary: my karma ran over my dogma
Review: For starters, I have to say that I think that Kevin Smith is a much better comedy writer than drama writer. I loved Clerks and really liked Mallrats, even though everyone else seems to want to pretend Mallrats doesn't exist. What's wrong with making a fun movie? On the other hand, Chasing Amy, which the critics loved, I wasn't impressed by. The comedy part was good, but then into turned into not a drama, but a melodrama. The drama in Dogma was much better in my opinion, but the pace of the movie was all wrong. Smith jumps from comedy to drama to comedy all in one scene. It left me dizzy. I'd be laughing over the serious stuff one moment, and then be too preoccupied pondering a serious point to enjoy the next joke. This movie could have been split into two: one comedy, one drama. If those two movies would have been further developed, they would probably both get 5 stars.

Summary: A supernatural hit!
Review: This is one original script! It makes you think while it makes you laugh. The director is a genius and the cast is one of a kind. Even though the film makes a total mockery out of the catholic religion, there are some thought-provoking issues in the story. What I like most about the film is that the existence of God is never questioned. Let's face it. We should all see the funny side of things. The dialogue is quite silly and insubstantial -- in other words, it is not to be taken seriously. After all, that's what having a sense of humor is all about. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, and Chris Rock are all great in the film. The cast and the director are the true of force behind this film. Watch it and laugh!
