Summary: Strong piece
Review: Granted, it isn't "Chasing Amy," which has to be Smith's best work to date. But "Dogma" is very, very strong and, as opposed to those people who think it's out to convert the people of the world to Satanism, it is actually about reaffirming faith and spirituality. This movie is pro-religion, folks, and not nearly as caustic as "Life of Brian" is. This is, basically, about a woman who is questioning her faith and her beliefs and the journey she takes in, literally, finding God. Just watch it with open eyes...

Review: Kevin Smith fans beware, there's a s**t demon of a DVD afloat!When I first saw Dogma, I knew I wanted it! It was a stunning and amazing film. When I bought on DVD, I rushed home to watch the extra features. Heh Heh Heh! Nothing, zip, zadda! If you love this movie and don't have it, buy it. But in order to get the best possible, BUY THE SPECIAL EDITION. IT IS THE SAME COST AS THE REGULAR EDITION! I AM EXPLAINING THIS TO YOU AS IF YOU WERE A FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD FOR A REASON! :)

Summary: Occasionally entertaining
Review: I have heard so many good things about this movie. I like Kevin Smith in general. I don't have such a rigid religious attatchment that I would dislike it just for its subject matter. It was just so strikingly average. It wasn't BAD, but it wasn't good, and it definitely wasn't great. Basically, it was a disappointment. The religious things discussed were old and cliche, and the novelty of swearing angels wore off well before the first 20 minutes were over. See this I guess if you're huge on Kevin Smith or really hate religion, but otherwise I doubt it'll make a huge impact on you.

Summary: Not for the religious
Review: This movie is hilarious! It took me a few viewings to actually appreciate he movie but I laugh everytime I watch the movie. Jay (Jason Mewes) steals the show and of course Chris Rock is hilarious. The version that I own is not the deluxe super duper packed one but I still think this is a great movie. This is the story of the search for the scion, Bethany (Linda Fiortino) to stop two angels (matt Damon and Ben Affleck) from returning to heaven. To really aprreciate the movie watch and enjoy.

Summary: I LOVE THIS MOVIE! But the Special Edition trick is sleazy.
Review: Dogma is one of my three favorite movies of all time. I love how smart this movie is and how interesting it is (although I don't much care for Linda Fiorentino's performance, everyone else is more than good enough to make up for it). BUT - this movie is another case of ripping off the people who like a movie by printing a bare bones DVD one year and a Super-fied edition of the same movie on DVD the next year. It's dishonest, insulting to people who buy DVDs, and overall a greedy practice that should be discontinued. Dogma = 5 stars. Sleazy marketing gimmicks = -2 stars.

Summary: Great Plot-Dirty Talk
Review: I felt that the unrelenting useage of profanity throughout this movie marred what could have been an exceptional production. Why do new Hollywood writers/producers feel that the [profanity] lends the necessary panache to their films to ensure that they are 'with it'? I would like to have my daughter see this movie because I think that it blends the correct amount of theology, fantasy, humor, and compassion to show up organized religion for the fraud that it, in many cases, is. The zealots who picketed "The Life of Brian' are the same types who disparaged this movie, probably without ever viewing it. I am kept from viewing this movie with my daughter because of the, as I formerly stated, unrelenting use of profanity. I would be uncomfortable sitting by her while the foul diatribes ...in support of no apparent plot points, ran on. I am a former seminary student, a retired Naval officer, and not a prude. I simply lament the apparent loss of propriety in exchange for the (now) minimal shock value of extreme language.

Summary: Truly amazing, a true refresher to the die-hard Catholics
Review: I am a little bit anti-christ, I find this movie highly entertaining not because it makes fun of Catholism (anyway if anyone is open-minded, this movie is never offensive in anyway), but because it creates a lot of thinking for us : what if we have the 13 apostle, what if the god is a woman, what if..... This is Kevin at his best, I can't wait to see his new movie in this summer.

Summary: Ripping off a poor student
Review: I loved this movie, I thought it was funny, and it had something to say something about life. I couldn't wait till it came out on dvd, so when it did I bought it the same day. To my dismay I found that there wasn't much on it other than the movie. Now, they release another version a year later with extra features hanging out of the package? It isn't fair, I'm a poor high school student, I don't have the money to pay for two dvds of the same movie. I really wish they would stop with the special editions, the collector editions, the super collector editions and whatnot because they are making me go broke!

Summary: great screenplay... lousy directing
Review: Kevin Smith is an excellent screenwriter. No doubt about it. But sadly heÂ's crap at directing his own films. A smart move on SmithÂ's behalf would be to let somebody else sit in *the* chair, while he kept to writing, and perhaps instead of directing he could be producing. So the problem with this film is, as IÂ've said, the directing. The scenes are well written, but Smith has huge trouble pulling them off in front of the camera. The shots are poorly set up. It all looks cheap. Not all of the scenes work. And so on and so forth. But thatÂ's not to say the film still donÂ't manage to generate a few laughs. Because, as I said, the screenplay really is funny. But itÂ's perhaps a better idea to rent this film than to purchase it. Another thing that bothers me, on a more general agenda, and which I would like to take the time to comment on, is how the production companies behind these films continously milk the market for every penny thatÂ's out there, by first releasing a normal DVD edition of the film and then, a few months later, release a special edition of the film. "They" seem to be doing this with nearly every film nowadays. Why canÂ't they just release the supirior version of the film and be done with it.

Summary: More than what it seems
Review: As a student at a Catholic high school I heard nothing but bitter diatribes against this movie for months and I have to say that this made me want to see it even more. Anyone who, like me, believes Smith can do no wrong will undoubtedly enjoy this movie for his classic tongue-in-cheek humor. I have to say that the issues raised in the movie-the role of women in the Church, overelaborate hierarchy and ceremonies that border on superstition and Jesus' race amoung others- are valid questions .... Aside from the considerable hype, you don't have to be Catholic to understand the message-that religion isn't the same thing as God. [most of]the actors are as impressive as the outstanding script. The dynamic between Damon and Affleck is as good as ever, Jason Lee is smooth as cream in his role as a crafty renegade demon, Alanis Morrisette is uncommonly beatific and seems to radiate natural serenity as God, and George Carlin is appropriately aggravating as the worldly bishop. I have to say that Chris Rock's twitchy bark makes him slightly unconvincing as a forgotten apostle but he's still hilarious. Silent Bob and Jay are their same slacker-with-heart selves and while Jay's antics aren't for the faint of heart, they make you love them even when they make you cringe. Smith must enjoyed such a large budget and, as evidence by the demon made entirely of feces, put it to good use. You'll enjoy this movie if you have an open mind and a sense of humor.
