Review: If you want to be reminded of the sweetness of life, I recommend watching this movie. There are some absurdly funny parts along with some tender, poignant moments. I loved this movie for its message to enjoy life and being open to what others have to teach us and what we can teach them.

Summary: The very best!
Review: My favorite movie of all time and one that still gets better every time i see it. Humor, drama, love, loss are all poignently brought across from both Bud Cort's and Ruth Gorden's portrayals of their brilliantly scripted characters. I saw it first in the theater, but now as a full-grown adult some of the nuances and lessons of love i now understand so much more. Using Cat Stevens as the soundtrack deserves whatever award goes to who made that decision! (I often judge new friends by if they've seen it, and liked it, or if they haven't, and i show them that they "understand" when to laugh.)

Review: A great movie!I watched it this morning on showtime and am so happy I did!I knew nothing of this movie except that Mary from the wonderful THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY considered it one of the finest love stories of our time.I agree with Mary!Love,not neccessarily romance,is the word here.Great songs by the great Cat Stevens adds to this quirky,warm hearted tale.It's also fun to see what life looked like in 1971.I was just 5 then.Brilliant flck!

Summary: An accident waiting to happen
Review: This film was a bad car crash that turned out right. The score was a terrible risk, how can you provide the feeling without going between string sections and the WB band. The plot is slow. Really slow. Some novices (they were) assume you will pay enough attention to the film.Forget the plot. Maude is the "never lost her inner child". Harold is the legacy of "responsibilty". Kind of an obvious zen lesson. However, the acting is superb. The score was an obvious accident. The appeal it has is eclectic. Those who have ever felt that life is overrated (why not a Nick Drake score?). Those who have so much vibrancy that they are forced to insanity in the face of despair (why not a Douglas Adam's screenplay?). I don't think they could do this again on purpose. Do you like the editting in "All that Jazz"? This is better. The cinematography (espicially facial close-ups) is good in only the ways a novice could take it to the limit. Not everyone will like this film. Those who have ever felt the sheer vivaciousness of being after a car wreck. Those who somehow came to a dead end and gave up. Those who have felt both. This is not a film for everyone. But for those who have ever felt deeply enough, this is a film of healing, introspection, and release. "While the sinners, sin; the children play" - Harold doesn't even know his sin and is crushed, Maude forgives all and fogives the kingdoms. If you have to watch it twice, and want to watch it thrice, odds are something happened right. I even learned to like Cat Stevens. I'm glad I did.

Summary: a perfect flavor for my taste
Review: actually, seeing Harold and Maude for the first time waaay back in '72, when i was 17 and just getting into what would become a life-long love of movies, it may have helped create my taste in movies! in all honesty, this may be my all-time favorite movie. music by cat stevens, so perfectly suited to it's time, also serves to tie the film together. the fact the location shots are all in parts of the san francisco bay area i grew up in probably had an unreasonable influence, too! it is one of those movies every line of which i can recite as i watch....it is worth it for Harold's mom's character alone! she has the best lines in the whole thing. as to the squeemishness some have evinced regarding the 'may-december' relationship....by the time harold was in love with maude...so was i!! and i have been ever since.

Summary: Close, but no cigar...
Review: The film is a worthy cause gone astray. One knows that Harold's baby-face charm will not be enough to sustain the film, and adult supervision is urgently needed. Maude comes to the rescue, changing the tone of the film for the worse. Maude is grossly over-acted. The self-indulgence in the acting of her character makes the idiosyncracies of Harold's death wish look almost monastic. The story, like that of many films made in the 70s, is too self-righteous to be taken seriously. The writer and the director like Harold and Maude so much that they run off the tangent in terms of plausibility. The failure of the film is a pity. Our over-organized life badly needs an antidote promised by this film. The problem is that a promise is all we got.

Review: A brilliant movie with an uplifting message. One has to not focus on any particular aspect of the film. Some people immediately see the relationship between Harold and Maude and are turned off. This is the wrong approach and shows a lack of open-mindedness. The movie is not meant to be a romance, it is meant to serve as a message that life is precious, quirky, and hilarious in ways you would never expect. Some say it is inappropriate, never judge a movie that way, humans by nature are inapropriate. Some say it is cliche, what may appear cliche on the surface is really rather original and essential to the message. Anyone looking for the occasional uproariously funny scene and an interesting outlook on life must see this movie.

Summary: Thought-provoking whacky black comedy!
Review: I'd heard about this movie for years and finally rented it. Loved it instantly for the zany plot, and some laugh-out-loud scenes with Bud Cort and his mother! I went out afterward and bought Cat Stevens' Greatest Hits! Ruth Gordan's Maude is so great, and has such a refreshingly unconventional view of life and death. The relationship between the two leads is really touching, and I appreciated the insightful scenes and dialogue. Favorite moments: Harold and Maude watching the seagulls by the garbage dump when Harold notices the tattoo on her arm; Maude's observations when they are sitting in the field of daisies. Sweet, funny, and different; this movie always cheers me up when I'm down!

Summary: A wonderful movie about life...
Review: This movie is a must-see... period. I have never been so moved by a film before in my life. Harold and Maude is such a creative film filled to the brim with symbolism and dark humor that every time I watch it, I find something else to sincerely reflect on. I don't really know anyone who didn't like this movie upon first viewing. I will not describe this movie for the sheer fact that it makes an incredible impact on the viewer if he or she knows absolutely nothing about it. I know, because it did me. I highly recommend you do NOT read any description, spoiler review or anything related to the content of this movie because the pleasure with viewing this will be much, much more intense. Go rent or buy and laugh and cry -- I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Summary: The worst movie I ever saw.
Review: I saw this movie in 1971 and to this day I consider it to be the worst film I have ever seen. I consider myself to have eclectic tastes; I watch all kinds of movies made from all over the world. But I have to say that the memory of "Harold and Maude" still makes me cringe after 30 years. It has a following that is obviously very passionate about it and I risk my Amazon rating by giving it a bad review. Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort's characters are extremely annoying. And I'm sorry, but the idea of a 20 year old and an 80 year old being romantically involved is, how shall we say, contra naturum. Taste is personal, but as C.S. Lewis asked in the "Abolition of Man", if a waterfall is sublime to one observer and mundane to another, which is it in reality? Can it be both sublime and mundane? In the case of "Harold and Maude", the answer is a resounding 'no'. It is a most mundane effort.
