Summary: Are we rating the same video?
Review: I'm sorry that I have to go against the grain here; I love aternative movies like the best of them, but this was just too weird. Life-affirming, I suppose, but it gave me a sick feeling. Faking the morose deaths, attending funerals for people he doesn't know, and the teenage boy being with a 79 year old woman (it's been awhile, I'm not sure if she's 69 or 79) is just too much. The PG rating should be stronger. I felt a weird sensation in the pit of my stomach after watching this movie. But, if you're going for ultra-weird and kinky, you would be well-served to watch this movie; it does have its merits.

Summary: Aiming above morality
Review: To portray Maude as fascist is to miss the whole spirit of the thing. The key word there is "spirit." This movie is NOT a political statement, it's a spiritual teaching. It's not about control, it's about freedom. That's why it has such a fervent following - of which I am one. I first saw it when I was Harold's age (and, like him, morbidly suicidal), but have dedicated my life to becoming Maude. Nearly 30 years (and dozens of viewings) later, I'm well on my way, enjoying life, having outrageous adventures, taking risks with humor and compassion. This movie is strong, good medicine. To me, it is the height of what a film experience should be: deeply, mythically, profoundly transformative.

Summary: A favorite to be seen again and again!
Review: Poignant, funny, touching, irreverent, uplifting. This is one of my very favorite movies. Without beating you over the head to make sure you get the message, it makes a powerful statement about the value of life and how one chooses to live it.

Summary: CULT CLASSIC
Review: Cult classic pairs Cort as a dead-pan disillusioned 20-year-old obsessed with death (his staged attempts at suicide are a highlight) and loveable 80 year old eccentric Gordon. The two meet at a funeral (a mutual hobby) and soon they develop a "taboo" romantic relationship in which they explore the "meaning of life" with a fresh perspective. The script was originally the 20-minute long graduate thesis of UCLA student Higgins, who showed it to his landlady, wife of the film's producer! Features music by Cat Stevens. Unique and unforgettable.

Summary: Hilarious ... if politically confused
Review: I saw this movie for the first time in years last night at the local art-house theater ... if you get a chance to see the new 35mm print, do so. The color is crisper and the sound mix much better than on the video (where the songs are too loud and the dialogue too soft).

As others have noted, this movie is howlingly funny if you like your humor black (and I do...) The songs and acting are great, and it's fun to see big stretches of Bay Area scenery that are now covered with subdivisions and strip malls.

As over-the-top as the movie can be at times, it also shows a surprising restraint. For example, in the scene on the Berkeley waterfront, Harold notices a certain distinguishing feature on Maude; the movie is content to let that glimpse speak for itself ... whereas a '90's movie would inevitably have a big, boring, weepy scene in which it was explained in detail.

Given this hint, and the movie's general anti-authoritarian bent, there was one jarring irony for me: Maude is portrayed as a curiously crypto-fascist personality. Her infatuation with the youthful form, her desire to "aim above morality" (different set of rules for her vs. the sheeplike masses), her plan to leave the world in a blaze of glory, Gotterdammerung style ... she seems like an Ubermensch in drag at times. (Plus, there's the curious symbolism of the gas-inhalation machine and the fatal tablets...) If Richard Wagner and Freidrich Nietzsche had collaborated on a sitcom (after a few bong hits), it might have looked something like this.

I left the movie glad to have seen it again on the big screen but, well, a bit puzzled.

Summary: Food for the soul
Review: I first saw "Harold and Maude" about a year ago. And I immediately rewound the video and watched it again and again. I own it now and every now and then I just need to see it. I feel the same way about "Ordinary People." "Harold and Maude" always finds a way to give me whatever I'm missing at the time. And after I see it, I always feel better.

Summary: Very 70s, and my favourite film ever
Review: Possibly my favourite film of all time - I love the quirky humour and the simple, life-affirming theme. I recently saw it again after about 8 years, and it was even better than I'd remembered. I love it when Maude tells the policeman she doesn't believe in driving licences, and when she points out to Harold how every flower is different. Harold's blind dates are hilarious too - especially the filing clerk. It's very 70s, but in the best possible way. And the music is great.
