Rating: Summary: Romantic, heartwarming movie which leaves room for fantasy Review: When I first saw Sleepless in Seattle, I walked out of the movie theater feeling like one of my teenage fanatsies had been put onto celluloid, there it was for all the world to see. Later I realized that I must not have been the only one out there dreaming I was going to fall in love at first site. Sleepless in Seattle has the abilty to remind me that sometimes fantasies/dreams are what keep us going. Even though I know it is only a movie, it's nice sometimes to leave reality behind and step into fantasy, because in fantasies anything can happen. I recommend this movie to people who have not given-up on following your heart.
Rating: Summary: One of the best romantic films made. Will be a "classic". Review: This is the type of movie that even when its over, you want MORE. Even, as I left the theater, I wanted to see it again. The music selections were perfert for the film. I have the soundtrack, and the DVD is the next purchase for me. It's the kind of movie that if you're a little down or under the weather, it's guaranteed to bring you back up.
Rating: Summary: One of My All-Time Favorites Review: Nora Ephron superbly directs one of the best, if not the best, romantic comedies of all time. Hanks is perfect and Ryan his match. One thing that really surprised me, that is rare in most movies, is that the supporting characters are absolutely hilarious and completely enjoyable (Rob Reiner, Rita Wilson, David Hyde Pierce, Barbara Garrick, Rosie O'Donnell, etc.). Everything about it is enjoyable from the settings, to the dialogues, to the clothes on the actors (check out the clothes on the babysitter, Clarise). This one is not to be missed. It's sweet, romantic, and very funny.
Rating: Summary: Fluff Review: Not much here but lightweight nonsense. Romantic comedy deserves more than this.
Rating: Summary: I've seen better Review: So so romantic comedy, from Reiner who should know better. "When Harry Met Sally" blows this lame duck out of the water.
Rating: Summary: A classic that belongs in every collection Review: Some movies are meant for rental and others merit purchase. "Sleepless in Seattle" has a timeless look and feel that will carry it over into the next century. This movie is a MUST for any fan of Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan. The DVD format is so far superior to the VHS media that even though this movie was made prior to DVD technology, it still looks great on a big screen tv. The same cannot be said for older movies captured on VHS. If you do not own DVD, get it now. This is one of the best "date" movies of the 90's and the director and screenwriter acknowledge this in several scenes showing women crying at this film's inspiration- "An Afair To Remember". This film bridges the "old" New York with the hip, escapist city of Seattle. Set during the holiday season and culminating on Valentines Day, the film is five stars.
Rating: Summary: Not Great, but it Works as a Feel-Good Modern Fable Review: Nora Ephron's SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993) is a nice fairy-tale of a movie that takes its primary inspiration from a classic Hollywood film, is written & directed by a chick-flick veteran, stars a pair of actors in what is at least their third on-screen pairing, and somehow comes out smelling as fresh as a newly-picked rose. This is a perfect date film, tailor-made for Valentine's Day. It creates the proper romantic mood for you & yours, while not requiring anyone to think too hard; put it to you this way, you won't miss much during your obligatory necking sessions. The Hollywood classic is AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957), to which numerous references are made throughout this film. The two stars of that earlier picture are Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The two stars of this film are, of course, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The combination of them with chick-flick queen Nora Ephron would lead you to believe that this movie is super-schmaltzy. Although the story unfolds according to the predictable manipulations of Ephron, and contains too many too-good-to-be-believable coincidences, it is ripe with sarcastic humor and even downplays its own hokiness. There's even a cute reference in it that a character makes towards films of this type. It is very well-acted. As has been mentioned, this film was released in 1993, when Tom Hanks was finding himself as an actor; in fact, his very next film was PHILADELPHIA (also 1993), for which he deservedly won his first Oscar for Best Actor in an extremely complex role. This performance, while not as deep, is still quietly nuanced--and very sympathetic. It rings true, unlike the machinations of the script. Meg Ryan is also in fine form here, really finding her own quiet nuances while avoiding her previous tendencies to play cutsy. Ross Malinger, playing the young-but-wise son of Tom Hanks' character, does very well, even if the script provides him with some pretty unbelievable things to say at times. We also get a fine performance, even if it is essentially one-note, from Bill Pullman; I loved his touching scene with Ryan at the rooftop hotel restaurant late in the film. Also adding to the festivities are Rosie O'Donnell, David Hyde Pierce and Rob Reiner; each contributing his/her own unique brand of comedy. There's even a memorable cameo by Tom Hanks' real-life wife Rita Wilson. Lastly, I like the way this movie makes good use of its Seattle and New York City locations. SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE may not make you sleepless, but it will entertain you, and maybe even bring out some of the hopeless romantic lurking somewhere in the depths of your heart and soul. RECOMMENDED
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful! Review: I first saw this movie when I was in college with my roomate, who knows all the best movies out there. I absolutely fell in love with it, and I went out and bought it immediately. It's ideal if you are single, it gives you hope for finding that perfect someone :), at least it did for me. If you like You've Got Mail, you'll also like Sleepless in Seattle, or if you haven't seen either, they go perfect together!!
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Review: An outstanding romantic comedy, Sleepless in Seattle, brings to the screen the love story between a recently widowed father of one from Seattle and a bride to be from New York, with all the ups and downs that that entails!
It is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about trust, love, and inner strength.
Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears. The film is simple enough, but does a great job of describing people's every day lives and the problems they face. It just goes to show that simplicity is often far better than complexity, when trying to present issues of a human nature.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Sleepless in Seattle is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: As much as i hate to admit it, i love sleepless in seattle. This coming from a 16 year old sophomore in high school...I first watched this movie with my mom a long way back when it had just come out, and i enjoyed it more because my mom told me it was good rather than because i actually liked it. But as i got older, and watched it more, i found out that the movie is just brilliant. A GREAT story, and a wonderfully directed film by Nora Ephron. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are M-O-F-E (made for each other, watch the movie) in romantic comedies. Great movie. (oh, and the person who reviewed this before me, says that the 10th anniversary edition is missing the broom closet scene...i dont know if thats just their version, because i know that scene is in this DVD. And i double checked to make sure i had the 10th anniversary edition, and i do. Just pointing that out.) GREAT MOVIE, A CLASSIC...BUY IT
