Rating: Summary: Runaway Sweet Story Review: I love that Roberts didn't make down the aisle the first time with Gere. I love that she had to become her own person on her own terms and come to him sans baggage. Nice. The scenery in this movie is fabulous; it makes you want to pack up and move to Vermont! Roberts smartly plays a woman who is trying to find herself within other people. Joan Cusack is terrific as her best friend, who accepts and supports her, but also voices her own feelings as well. The scene in the beauty parlor is very nice. Cusack nails it: Roberts is the attention hog when it comes to men, and Cusack would like her to at least not take attention from her hubby. Gere is convincing as a reporter first, in need of a story, later desparate to keep his own credibility. Rita Wilson is fabulous as Gere's caring ex-wife. Very pleasant film.
Rating: Summary: "I am profoundly and irreversibly screwed up." Review: Lightweight and sugary are two words that can be used to describe Garry Marshall's "Runaway Bride." Surprisingly another word that can be used to describe this film is entertaining. While the re-teaming of Marshall, Julia Roberts, and Richard Gere for a second time does not produce as memorable a time as their first effort, "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Runaway Bride" is still enjoyable in its own sweet way. A drunk tells reporter Ike Graham (Gere) a strange story of a woman named Maggie Carpenter (Roberts) who has a strange habit of developing cold feet at the altar over and over again. This tale inspires him to write a nasty article about her that eventually results in a reply from Carpenter. He becomes intrigued by this feisty woman and travels to her hometown to investigate her further. Carpenter is annoyed with his snooping but eventually the pair is drawn to one another and true love blossoms in the best cinematic fairy-tale fashion. Sure, it will not take you long to figure out how "Runaway Bride" will end once you start watching it, but the film still works thanks to the direction by veteran Marshall, the natural charm of the two leads and strong supporting performances by Paul Dooley, Joan Cusack, Jean Schertler, and Christopher Meloni, Rita Wilson, and Hector Elizondo. There is nothing deep or profound to be found in this film as it is basically a modern-day version of a Seventies-era sit-com with all its formulaic conventions intact. Accept it on those terms and you'll find that "Runaway Bride" is a harmless romantic comedy that will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. Chase it down for a fun time.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: I watched this movie with my wife unfortunately. Unfortunate that I watched this movie, not that I viewed it with my wife. The movie was so bad that we left 3/4 into it. It was so bad that even my wife agreed it was horrible and she left with me. Julia Roberts while having a good smile is not the best of actresses. Case in point is Ocean's Eleven.
Rating: Summary: This is no "Pretty Woman" Review: Ok, so I didn't expect this to be as good as pretty woman, but I did expect it to be pretty good since Julia Roberts and Ricard Gere were in it. I didn't enjoy it much. It moved kind of slow, and the whole movie all I kept waiting for was the reason she kept running away at the altar, and without giving away the ending, I thought it was a really flaky and unsubstantial reason. I didn't really enjoy it. I didn't find it very funny, I never laughed out loud once through the whole movie. If you like romantic comedies, try the wedding singer.
Rating: Summary: Not What You Expect Review: Runaway Bride is about a woman who is about to get married to a guy but, leaves him at the alter. While this is happening an unattractive man tells Ike Graham (Richard Gere)about this bride (Julia Roberts). Ike writes this in the newspaper since he's a reporter who really needs an eye catching story. Maggie Carpenter finds the story and writes an angry letter that gets Ike fired. Ike believes his sorce and says it's true. Now the plan is to go to Maggie's home town and prove he's right. While he's doing this Maggie(Roberts) is engaged again and says she will marry this man for sure. Still of course, Ike doesn't believe her. What ends up happening is Ike falls in love with Maggie and wants to marry her. As you can expect he ends up getting the girl. This movie is exactly like Pretty Woman. It has the same falling in love scenes and comedy. With this movie being about two hours of this, it can get old pretty quick. Only difference is the setting and storyline. This is why I think this movie deserves 2 stars.
Rating: Summary: Provides some laughs but one can't help but feel sorry for.. Review: ...the sports-crazed boyfriend who eventually gets dumped by Julia for, who else, Richard Gere. Maybe it's simply that I cannot stand Richard Gere and would love very much to knock him down in the same manner as the coach does in this movie. Anyways, guys, this is a fun film that will suffice your little lady and ladies, this will be the film you came to expect. Your hubby or boyfriend, however, will do his darndest to stay interested in this film. It's simply too predictable. Oh well, it's still not a bad film for a boring summer's evening. I might have given this film another star if not for Richard Gere being in the film. Is it just me or is he kind of similar to the pretty boy back in school that none of the guys liked and finally gets beat up? Oh well.
Rating: Summary: This is a BEAUTIFUL movie... Review: It's a cute plot, great characters with absolutely BREATHTAKING autumn scenery. Of course, no one will probably ever get married at the top of a hill and ride off on horses...but you can in THIS movie. Just watch it and enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Woman Sequel meets Julia Roberts' Life Story Review: "Runaway Bride" is a charming little romantic comedy about a girl who can't commit. Richard Gere plays Ike Ghram, a female-bashing journalist who's had a bad run of luck with women, and Julia Roberts plays Maggie Carpenter, a complex woman who can't seem to settle down. Though there's nothing particularly spectacular about this film, I really can't find anything wrong with it either. Again, we get to see what wonderful chemistry Richard and Julia have. When they look in to eachothers' eyes, sparks fly! STILL! Even after 10 years!! The casting is wonderful (as I will elaborate on in a moment), the script is witty, the exchanges between Julia and on-screen pal, Joan Cusack are both endearing and comically amusing, and the story provides a little more complexity and sophistication in the end than we expect. Two things I loved about this film: 1) It serves as enough of a sequel to "Pretty Woman" to satisfy fans. Not only do we see a renunion of the beloved couple, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, "Pretty Woman" director, Gary Marshall returns to direct this charming little romantic comedy as well. As if that wasn't enough, pay close attention to some of the other minor characters in "Runaway Bride"... *First, Hector Elizondo, who played hotel manager, Bernard Thompson in "Pretty Woman" is Fisher, Ike's buddy in "Runaway Bride". *Larry Miller played Mr. Hollister, the manager of the shop in Beverly Hills in "Pretty Woman". In "Runaway Bride", he played the bartender at the bar in NYC that Ike hangs out at. Interesting, huh. But wait - there's more... *Patrick Richwood a.k.a. "Dennis" the bellhop from "Pretty Woman" is a TV Host in the town of Hale in "Runaway Bride". As if that wasn't enough fun, *Marvin Braverman, the room service waiter who Julia didn't tip in "Pretty Woman" plays the t-shirt vendor from the NYC streets in "Runaway Bride". Now that I've given away some of the obvious stuff, see if you can pick up some of the other fun little subtle things that happen in the film that are reminiscent of "Pretty Woman"... 2)The producers could have renamed this film "The Life Story of Julia Roberts" Anyone who follows Hollywood knows Ms. Roberts' track record. She's dated Liam Neeson, Dylan McDermott, Matthew Perry, and the list goes on. She was engaged to Kieffer Sutherland but changed her mind the night before the wedding. She finally wed Lyle Lovett but divorced after less than 2 years. When "Runaway Bride" was released, Julia was with Benjamin Bratt, who everyone thought was "the one". But they seperated in early 2002 after 4 years together. Rumors flew that it was because Benjamin wanted to commit but Julia didn't. We'll never know. Still, it seemed as though her streak would continue. This is another reason why I find this film so amusing. It's almost as if Julia has left her body and is watching herself dump man after man! Just recently, however, our real-life runaway bride tied the knot with Danny Moder, a cameraman who she met on, I belive, the set of "The Mexican". Personally, I hope that she can stick with this one. I also hope that you will pick up this movie and enjoy all aspects of it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: Save your Money Review: Ok, this was a horrible movie. It's another Hollywood attempt to make an easy buck and cash in on the success of an earlier and much better movie (Pretty Woman). I saw this in the theatre and could not believe that I paid money to sit through it. The movie has no direction what so ever and yet is also extremely pridictable not to mention very slow moving. The stars walk through their performances as if they even realize how bad of a script this was. If you like Julia Roberts and/or Richard Gere, buy another movie because this one is way done on the list in their canons.
Rating: Summary: I Can't Believe It's A Movie!!! Review: This meandering piece of cinema junk reteamed Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, and Director Garry Marshall in what promised to be another romantic comedy to set a new standard for the ages ... sadly, it failed, and it failed miserably. Richard Gere stars as a reporter who is drawn to the story of the self-serving Julia Roberts, a wannabe-bride who's left three men standing at the altar (literally) on the day of the wedding. The premise is unfunny, and the film handles it with equal aplomb. Go out and revisit their earlier experiment, PRETTY WOMAN, and enjoy laughs simpler and more revisionist.
