Review: Contrary to what some might say this movie is wonderfully romantic as well as well written. It may be predictable but the acting and the dialog make for a movie well worth your time to see. Unlike most movies today Runaway Bride, has no sex scenes or other trash Hollywood uses to get ratings. Good show for everyone!

Review: This was an adorable romance. Roberts is great as the lovely quirky bride (in all 5? wedding dresses) who doesn't quite know herself. Gere was better than ever as the guy who, after ripping her character to shreds, figures her out and falls for her. Joan Cusack and Harold Elizondo stole the show as devoted sidekicks. A million laughs and a dozen tears. Buy the soundtrack too.

Summary: An Awful, Manipulative, Must-Avoid Waste
Review: Looking for an original and charming romantic comedy with engaging characters, original humor, and a twist or two? You'll definitely want to check out either last summer's "Notting Hill" or the 1996 release "The Truth About Cats And Dogs". If you're looking for any of the aforementioned qualities within director Garry Marshall's "Runaway Bride", a film with lame jokes, an ending that's obvious from the opening credits, and a true lack of chemistry between the film's leads, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, you'll be greatly disappointed. The film plays like a bland two-hour sitcom...What is mildly amusing on prime-time TV comes across as a major annoyance in the context of a feature film. If you're a Julia Roberts fan, check out the aforementioned "Notting Hill", a film with engaging characters and genuine chemistry. Richard Gere fans should spend their time and money on "Primal Fear", an involving thriller which also features Edward ("Fight Club") Norton in his first feature-film role. Take my advice--avoid "Runaway Bride" at all costs and drop half a star from my rating--that's a true reflection of this film's 'quality'.

Summary: A cute, funny romantic romp.
Review: What a good movie. It wasn't the best movie ever made, but it was a nice little cute funny movie that really had nothing offensive and everyone from any age could watch. Julia Roberts gives one of her best (and funniest) performances as a woman who just cannot seem to marry a guy and everytime she is at the altar shys away and runs. Richard Gere hears about her (he is a journalist for a newspaper) and is sent in to write a story on this "Runaway Bride". Things go well at first, but he thinks he may be falling in love with her and vice versa. The acting was fantastic, the screenplay written well and at time very funny. Joan Cusack gives an outstanding performance (as usual) and Roberts and Gere have never been more likable.

Review: This is such a great movie! Okay, now, I guess I am a little partial because I do adore romantic comedies. Runaway Bride has the most romantic ending I've ever seen in a movie (with the exception of An Affair to Remember, nobody can beat that). I absolutely loved it! I was even amazed at how clean the movie was compared to other Hollywood romantic trash. I'd buy this movie now and you can bet that as soon as that price drops, I'll be adding it to my collection!

Review: In my opinion, this movie was much better than "Pretty Woman." It was more realistic, had more charming characters, had much more beautiful scenery, and was a lot funnier than Gere and Roberts previous flick. This movie is safe for anyone over 13. Get a copy of it from amazon today. You will not regret it. It is a classic.

Review: I just finished reading several of the reviews for this movie and most the complaints seemed to be because this wasn't "Pretty Woman".
Thank God!
The only thing they have in common is the stars, Gere and Roberts. I watch enough movies that I don't feel the need to compare, but try to watch them on their own merits (if indeed they even have any).
I like this one, obviously. The acting was absolutely surperb, the storyline interesting, and the magic always there. Occasionally, a great happy ending is wonderful and this was pretty much a great ending for everyone, even the jilted 4th husband to be.
On a purely superficial note, Roberts doesn't seem to give a damn how she looks and I like that, too. At times she looked bloody awful, others drop-dead gorgeous. Gere, on the other hand, just keeps getting better and better looks-wise. I liked the combination of the two, the chemistry, and their on screen reactions to one another.
Well worth seeing and owning.

Summary: Runaway Bride a runaway disaster
Review: Upon watching this movie, the viewer can't help but make comparisons with Pretty Woman. Runaway Bride has an excellent cast, but this time Gere and Roberts don't live up to the splash they made in their earlier film together. And Joan Cusack is just plain annoying as the best friend who tye-dies Richard Gere's hair when he goes in for a shampoo (and news of Maggie Carpenter).
A small-town girl who runs away from the altar; a big-city muckracking journalist who likes a good scoop. The two fight incessantly for about three quarters of the movie, then all of a sudden, at the rehearsal, decide to get married. A fairy-tale ending, yes, but highly improbable. What is meant to be funny instead turns out to be sad and tragic. Why does Maggie run away from the altar? We never really find out. There are more loose ends to this movie than I can count.
I've seen both actors do better than this- a reunion of the two was an unwise move by the producers. Aside from the fact that this is a cute love story, this movie hardly has any merit to speak of. Its no wonder that Roberts and Gere fans stick instead to more lucrative fare such as Pretty Woman.

Review: The idea of reuniting Julia Roberts and Richard Gere after the phenomenal success of Pretty Woman was a good idea. The fact the reunion was so spaced out, it made Gary Marshall look like he was either remaking or shooting a sequel for Pretty Woman. The film just didn't cut it for me. It lacked everything that Pretty Woman had. The humor was a more cheesy slapstick style, and the plot was too weak to compare to its predecessor. Looking at it as a movie by itself, however, it wasn't all that bad. If you loved Pretty Woman, give it a try. I sort of reccomend this.

Summary: Still a fun flick
Review: Lightweight and sugary are two words that can be used to describe Garry Marshall's "Runaway Bride." Surprisingly another word that can be used to describe this film is entertaining. While the re-teaming of Marshall, Julia Roberts, and Richard Gere for a second time does not produce as memorable a time as their first effort, "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Runaway Bride" is still enjoyable in its own sweet way. A drunk tells reporter Ike Graham (Gere) a strange story of a woman named Maggie Carpenter (Roberts) who has a strange habit of developing cold feet at the altar over and over again. This tale inspires him to write a nasty article about her that eventually results in a reply from Carpenter. He becomes intrigued by this feisty woman and travels to her hometown to investigate her further. Carpenter is annoyed with his snooping but eventually the pair is drawn to one another and true love blossoms in the best cinematic fairy-tale fashion. Sure, it will not take you long to figure out how "Runaway Bride" will end once you start watching it, but the film still works thanks to the direction by veteran Marshall, the natural charm of the two leads and strong supporting performances by Paul Dooley, Joan Cusack, Jean Schertler, and Christopher Meloni, Rita Wilson, and Hector Elizondo. There is nothing deep or profound to be found in this film as it is basically a modern-day version of a Seventies-era sit-com with all its formulaic conventions intact. Accept it on those terms and you'll find that "Runaway Bride" is a harmless romantic comedy that will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. Chase it down for a fun time.
