Summary: A Screwball Comedy With Its Own Style
Review: I suppose everyone between here and Jupiter knows that "Runaway Bride" is the long awaited re-teaming of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere after the immensely successful surprise hit "Pretty Woman." Well . . . I wouldn't say lightning hit twice in the same place, but "Runaway Bride" is not without some charms of its own.

She is a nubile young woman with a habit of standing up men at the altar. He is a tabloidish journalist assigned to get the goods on her latest wedding. After she backs out of it, he decides to hang around her little town and do a personality profile on her. She decides to make his life miserable. They hate each other. They fall in love. The formula = screwball comedy! And for what it is, it's pretty good.

I thought the movie was a little slow going in the first half because the plot had to keep Roberts and Gere apart from one another, but once they got together the old chemistry flared up. "Runaway Bride" is a nice feelgood movie, no great classic but a good movie to own nonetheless.

Summary: Fun but no "Pretty Woman"
Review: "Pretty Woman" is one of my all-time favorite movies, even if it is completely unrealistic, corny, and unbelievable. But the beauty of that movie is that the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere made you want to believe. "Runaway Bride" was a chance to see these two actors together again, and once again I enjoyed their chemistry on-screen. If anything, I liked Gere's character more because he was more noticeably flawed. However, lightning doesn't strike twice and the movie itself just doesn't catch you and pull you in like "Pretty Woman" does. It was enjoyable enough but I can't imagine myself watching it over and over again like I have with their first effort. That said, I enjoyed several other performances in the movie as well, such as Joan Cusack (a real scene-stealer), Hector Elizondo (so great in "Pretty Woman", he was sadly underused here), and Rita Wilson. If you're going to choose a movie because you're a Julia Roberts fan, you might prefer "Notting Hill", her other effort last summer, or better yet go see "Erin Brockovich" in the theaters.

Summary: Unbelievably Bad
Review: I couldn't believe how bad this thing was! By all means, skip this and get Notting Hill or My Best Friend's Wedding if you're a Julia Roberts fan.

Summary: not the best for both
Review: this movie went a little too slow then the romance suddely really blossomed towards the end ike Notting Hill...the storyline was cute but it wasn't persuasive enough IMO. they bothe have done much much better..

Summary: Charming romantic comedy despite contrived plot
Review: I'm sure with the reunion of Director Garry Marshall, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, everyone expected Pretty Woman II which this film most certain was not. Both Gere and Roberts have improved as actors since PW in 1990, but the story here didn't give them much help.

Ike Graham (Gere) loses his job as a columnist over an unsubstantiated story he writes about Maggie Carpenter's (Roberts) habit of leaving her prospective husbands at the alter in full flight. He then takes a trip to her small town to see if he can get the real story and vindicate himself. The story is ok to here, but thereafter it is contrived and implausible.

The minute he arrives, everyone is just delighted to tell him Maggie's most intimate secrets. That's just not the way small town folks act with complete strangers, especially big city reporters who just made a mockery of one of their own. Since this universal acceptance and intimating is the key to everything that comes afterward, it makes the whole story a little far fetched.

Despite this defect, the characters are well developed, and flawed though they are, they are lovable. The age old romantic comedy angle of antagonists falling in love gets a good treatment here. The plot really produces no major surprises after about midway through the film, but as this is a romantic comedy, everyone is rooting for it to end the way they expect anyway.

As before, Gere and Roberts have great screen chemistry. Richard Gere plays a little different character here than he is used to, less macho; more vulnerable and sensitive. This was a much more mature performance than the cocky arrogant roles he usually takes on and I think it marks an expansion of his talent. Julia Roberts is...well...Julia Roberts. Somehow, the whole of her performance is always greater than the sum of the parts. She has found a comfortable home in the romantic genre and as long as she doesn't attempt to stray too far from that domain (eg. Mary Reilly, Conspiracy Theory), she will always do well.

Marshall did the best that could be done with the script he had and kept the story moving along well. There was nothing ground breaking from a visual standpoint, but the actors were well directed and the whole cast meshed well.

I rated this movie a 7. It was kind of an improbable premise, but was an entertaining romantic comedy with plenty of laughs and schmaltz.

Summary: Below Average
Review: This movie was a letdown. No real "chemistry" until about 75% of the movie is over.

Skip it and see Notting Hill, which was much better.

Summary: save your money-not gere and roberts best work
Review: I particually love watching romantic comedy's, this was a BIG disappointment, I read that joan cusack stole moments from this movie and it was true! The plot and story lines were weak. I found myself wishing this movie just to end...I loved notting hill and thought this would be another, and it was 180 degrees the other way. gere and roberts were wonderful together once before and in this case it was enough.

Summary: My favorite movie in the whole world!
Review: I absolutley love this movie, and can't wait for it to come out on video in July! It is very romantic and Richard Gere and Julia Roberts are wonderful at portraying this love. It is also very very funny, however, I know that not everyone loves this movie as much as I did, but you'll have to see it to find out for yourself!

Summary: Oh baby, baby, baby!
Review: Richard Gere is so hot! He really did a good come back in this movie, if you are a Julia Roberts fan, you are going to love her as usual, what really impressed me with this movie was Richard Gere, he actually stole the show! He was playful, and inquisitive and a real heartthrob. Tastefully done, very romantic and sweet. loved it! Best movie of this year!

Summary: More depth than expected and warmth and humor too!
Review: There is much more depth to this warm, charming and funny movie than most reviewers give it credit for. There is a message here about the importance of self-knowledge to avoid losing yourself in a relationship. Maggie cannot allow herself to marry as long as she and the man waiting at the altar does not know the real Maggie. Ike helps her to realize all this and deal with it. Love is a great motivator and, at its best, it helps us grow emotionally. That is the plot of this movie. Lucky for us, the way to all this discovery is paved with laughs and entertainment.
