Rating: Summary: If i could give Zero Stars... Review: I don't know, but from time to time someone in Hollywoodland comes back with the idea tha all latins are the most sexual people in the world, that everybody here in Brasil lives in beaches and dances samba everyday. I think it's time you stop exploring this misconcept! Most people in Brasil live in houses and cities such as NY, Boston... I mean actually cities. Most of us don't make 'macumba' (a kind of black magic) or eat seafood all the time. It's interesting to see the film was written by a Brazilian, because she seems to have forgetting how living here is! The whole film is a mistake! Penelope Cruz should play only Spanish caracters once she is Spanish - or at least take some English Lessons! She is terrible! And Murilo Benicio ( her husband in the movie) is as terrible as her. He is quite famous here, but he should limit himself to soapoperas. This film reminds me Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, which happens to be one of the best Brazilian movies. If you think food can be sensual Watch (or read) Dona Flor... Well, Dona Flor... may feature Brazilian food and sensuality (as woman on top) but -be sure- it was made by a brazilian actress and not a Spanish one, and she speaks POrtuguese, just like veryone in Brasil!
Rating: Summary: hbo kept me up all night! Review: i don't usually boast movies full of lovey dovey mush! this movie is different! it caught my attention right away with this beautiful girl cooking wonderful food and in love with a gorgeous pig headed man... he keeps her happy at first then chooses to keep her in the kitchen cooking for his restaurant while he's out playing with the girls! he can't get exactly what he wants all of the time. with beauty comes motion sickness... girl leaves boy and boy curses himself... it's funny and witty and spicy! beautiful movie with a very cute plot and plenty of twists, turns, and... fish! a must see! in fact, i just finished watching this movie and it's up on my wishlist... i'm hoping someone will catch the hint that i must have it! coming from a girl who loves her horror flicks and hates lifetime... thumbs up to the "woman on top!"
Rating: Summary: Pity for Penelope Review: I feel sorry for Penelope Cruz for making this silly movie. Its about a woman that finds her husband with someone else, so she heads to the U.S. She lands a gig as a cook on a cooking show, everyone loves her. She finds a new guy that digs her. The desperate husband tries to get her back and after persuing her, he does! Too many inappropriate things for me to like here. Let's see she has a guy that dresses as a woman, and the fact that Penelope's character goes out to the ocean and offers offerings to some goddess. Too pagan for my Bible believing ways. Penelope is a sweet actress. She's believable, however this movie is all too wrong for her to show her talents. Actually it was well done for a film with a small budget, but unfortunately not good enough to keep.
Rating: Summary: Delicious Soundtrack But The Film is Too Inconsistant Review: I have to admit I was disappointed with this movie. Actually, the soundtrack is the most delicious aspect...What I was hoping would be a fun and light-hearted romp turned out to be a cheesy film filled with inconsistancies. There are some humourous moments, but there are many more that are just not plausible. At the beginning when Isabella flees to San Francisco, we are led to believe it's her first time there. However, she has an amazing ability to navigate the streets of SF (albiet jerkily..) and once she arrives at Monica's apartment building, she seems to know EXACTLY where the apartment is (what floor, hallway, door...) without even searching. Hmmmm...In another scene, she is looking and marking the locations of restaurants to look for work at, off of business cards she'd been given in Brazil. Now let me ask you; could you, in a BIG new city, easily locate on a city map the locations of addresses off of business cards? Give me a break! It was unbelievable situations like this that are so far fetched, it made it uncomfortable to watch. And even though there are bits of fantasy mixed in (some good, some bad), you wonder why there wasn't a better job with the script-because there could have been. And later, outside the studio with her first confrontation with her husband in SF, the poor thing must be freezing to death! She is in a whisper of a slip dress, no coat, no jacket, and you can very easily see the breath of the actors in the air! Ok, maybe it's just me and my attention to detail, but it was little details like that which were so obvious, that made it difficult for me to enjoy it. If you rent this movie, make sure you rent it for the cheapest price possible, its not worth more than that. Unless you just want to listen to the music. In that case, buy the soundtrack- you'll be happier.
Rating: Summary: Mermaid Spells, Chili Peppers, Romance Review: I love this movie and I will certainly tell you why: it is utterly charming, unpredictable (regardless of what others think), and has a fairy tale aspect that I find irresistable. It has beautific scenery - from steamy Brazil to hip San Fran - and great music too. I already bought the soundtrack! Penelope is exquisite as the motion sick Isobel (an impediment she can control as long as she is literally in control of vehicles and bedroom romps). Her very handsome husband has a hard time adjusting to her strange ailment and its implications and is caught cheating. Off she runs to San Fran, finding solace with her long time cross-dressing friend, Monica (really a man - was 'Mercutio' in Baz Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet). It is here that she meets a ditzy, hiccupping producer who exploits her cooking talents on a TV show. There's a great twist, though. The husband chases after her, singing to her from the streets and her TV studio. She learns of a spell that will sink her love for him to the bottom of the sea with a mermaid goddess. Are they soul mates? Will they reunite? This one didn't go the way I thought it would. I bought the book. It has the whole story, illustrations, and Isobel's recipes. Too passionate to resist. Try these other FOOD movies: 'Big Night' with Stanley Tucci, 'Like Water for Chocolate' (the book is great, recipes included), 'Simply Irresistible' with Sarah Michelle Gellar, and 'Chocolat'. Bon Appetit!
Rating: Summary: Feel Good movie Review: I thought the movie was great! It made me feel good watching it. The whole vibe was so soothing and the music was superb. Penelope Cruz did a good job for it being her first english spoken movie. Her husband is hot as hell, and you could tell that they were meant to be from the beginning. It really capitalized on the essence of love. Great chic flick, sends a good message to woman. Despite her decisoin with men, she realized that her husband was her true love in the end. I now want to move to Brazil!!!!
Rating: Summary: Dopey movie with bad ending Review: I was disposed to watch this movie, think it was cute, and never watch it again. I was sorely disappointed, though. The movie follows Penelope Cruz, a girl severely stricken with motion sickness. She leaves her cheating (but good looking) husband, and comes to the US, where she ends up hosting her own cooking show. Now, I think fluff films can be fun sometimes, but this one really wasn't good. The movie ends up following her deciding between two men, and eventually trying to get back a sacrifice she made to a goddess of the sea so she would no longer love her husband. In the end, I felt cheated when she went back to her husband who cheated on her, and never really seemed to love her. If you're looking for mindless entertainment, see this. If you want a movie where you can at least agree with the ending, don't see it.
Rating: Summary: Not what I expected Review: I was expecting a silly movie with Penelope Cruz. Instead I found a well-constructed film worthy of entering my collection. I really enjoyed how the film was put together and the tale. Maybe some people rating here don't understand it is a FAIRY TALE! It's not Ben Hur or (GAG!) Gosford Park and it never said it was. But it was certainly more charming and fun than it ever let on. The music is stunning throughout the film.

Rating: Summary: Terrible movie so I ordered it Review: I went to see another movie with a friend but this was the only one that wasn't sold out. During the whole movie I was groaning and laughing at how terrible it was. As I was leaving the movie, I was still laughing. The movie stuck in my head. I have a copy on DVD ordered. Rent it first, before you buy it.
