Summary: Lack of romance disappointing, but good comedy subplots
Review: I bought this film for the same reason most other young women probably did - a love story involving the gorgeous Jude Law! I'd never even heard of this film and only found it after doing a Jude Law search on Amazon. I have just finished watching it and I can sort of understand why it wasn't widely publicised ...

It's an OK film ... a comment which sort of prepares you for how 'memorable' I found it. The film's main love story is that of Danny (Law) and Anna (Gretchen Mol), who first meet when Anna is being born (5 year-old Danny literally lends a hand!). The young Danny declares to the amusement of the adults present that he will marry this little baby one day! After moving to England and growing up there, Danny returns to the States 25 years later only to run into Anna and her family once again. Danny, a 30 year-old tile-maker and incurable romantic, decides it's his fate to end up with Anna, but of course things couldn't be that simple - Anna already has a fiance that everyone likes. There's also a lot of stuff going on in Anna's family which seems to be coming to a head when Danny arrives on the scene - Anna's blind sister is in need of a huge change in her overly-closeted life; her beloved mother is dying; and her arrogant brother is dealing with an unstable wife who likes to confront him regularly with a pistol!

What slightly disappointed me about this film was the fact that the 'main' love story was the least interesting of all (save a couple of cute scenes involving the toss of a coin). The other stories, particularly the one involving Jennifer Tilly as the blind sister, held my attention more. I never grew to like Anna - who seemed cold and boring throughout - and thus found the passionate Danny's sudden love for her too unbelievable. There is barely a meaningful word spoken between the two, and they seem to be two completely ill-matched people - so the instant 'love' was inexplicable. It's either the fault of the script-writers or Mol, but it's a shame that a better portrayal of 'the object of Danny's desire' could've made this a better film.

To end on a positive note, I did enjoy the film more for its frequent comic interludes and some of the supporting cast's performances, particularly Martha Plimpton and Brenda Bletyhn. It's a good film for a free afternoon where you feel like smiling (and gazing at Jude Law!). I just wish it could have concentrated more on developing its main love story than dedicating too much time (and better script-writing) to its sub-plots.

Summary: I Just Adore This Movie!
Review: So many people have written reviews that I will just agree and say that it is wonderful. I taped it off of cable and watched it three times in two days.

Jude Law is so fabulous in the role of Danny. I agree with another reviewer about the scene where he is chewing gum. So SEXY! Another couple things about him that I love are his smile and his eyes. The last scene in the movie, where he and Anna are in the train station demonstrates perfectly what I mean.

The supporting cast in this movie are equally impressive. Brenda Blethyn as Anna's Mother is wonderful, as are Jennifer Tilly as Anna's blind sister Nina and Martha Plimton as her older sister Karen, who although she does not have a very big part gets some of the funniest scenes. Like the one in a Bakery where she confronts one of Danny's co-workers for making obscene gestures (you don't see the gesture, just the resulting tirade). It is hilarious.

I Highly recommend this movie for all who love romantic comedy. If you don't, rent it just for Jude Law.

Summary: unbelievable romance, lame comedy, crowded film
Review: Yikes! I'm quite baffled by the positive reviews here! I really like Jude Law (Gattaca) and thoroughly enjoy romantic comedies, but I found this film so absolutely lame on every level that it was difficult to finish. By the time it was over, my husband and I just looked at each other and said, "Whoa, what was that?!"

First, the movie has a very bizarre framing device: Law's character is asked to help deliver a baby when he is five years old. Aside from the discomfort of seeing a child reach into Brenda Blethyn's womb, the young actor must then look sweetly at the new baby and say "I'm going to marry her." This is not only bizarre, it's creepy-bizarre. Still, I tried to forgive this oddity and get on with the movie. Second, this is a great cast that is SO wasted -- Blethyn, Martha Plimpton, Jennifer Tilly and many others in this large under-utilized cast are given a number of quirks but there are so many subplots that you never get to know any of them, or why they are the way they are. Didn't someone once say, "Quirks do not a character make"? Well, that person was not this screenwriter. You just jump from one goofy but endearing mannerism or device to another. There are enough charcters here to make three romantic comedies but instead we get one overcrowded mess. Third, Jude Law is incredibly talented, but he's miscast here as a young man so in love that he affects his love interest's entire family. Law is more a button-down quiet guy, who might inspire passion but not necessarily of the exuberant, romantic variety. Fourth, the chemistry between Law and Gretchen Mol is nonexistent -- two nice actors who are NOT good together. Fifth, the music is pretty bad, intruding on the film more than accentuating the emotions. Finally, the DVD features are: the movie trailer. Whooppee!

If you want to see a fun romantic comedy that you haven't heard of, check out Happy Accidents. This film is lame despite its great cast, and one wonders why all these talented people signed on to this goofy project.

Summary: A charming romantic movie--why is it not available?!
Review: This is one of the sweetest movies I have seen in a long time--with good writing, direction, and acting all around. Jude Law (love him!) is absolutely adorable as Danny, and Gretchen Moll is equally good as Anna, the girl he believes he is destined to be with. The supporting characters are also endearing and interesting, most notably Jennifer Tilly as Anna's blind yet perceptive sister. All I can say is that this is one of my favorite movies, and anyone with a romantic bone in their body should see it. The only problem is that we can't buy it (at least for the time being). This comes as a huge disappointment since I got online today specifically to do just that. Hopefully the studio will realize there are a whole lot of people waiting to buy this wonderful movie, and they'll release it for us.

Summary: Add this to your top 10 of great love stories!
Review: This movie is fantastic. It's funny, romantic and, well, fantastic. Not much of a Jude Law fan, I was in love with him by the end of the movie. Jennifer Tilley was not her playing her normal, ditzy role. One of her lines from the movie pretty much sums it up... "Danny's (Jude Law) love for [Anna] is so big, it spilled over and effected us all". This movie will effect you!

Summary: A sweet, nutty comedy you can wrap a cushy evening around
Review: The first conclusion I am going to have to make about someone who tells me this movie isn't a fabulously sweet romantic comedy is that he has a crass taste in humour, most likely of the "Spy who shagged me" genre.

Make no mistake, MFAR is light, nutty, often comical and occasionally even laugh-out-loud hilarious (as in the case of almost any scene with the sister Karen, played with wonderful timing by Plimpton). Maybe I enjoyed it a little more than I should have because I ran into it on cable and had absolutely no prior expectations whatsoever.

The predicament of the movie -- a young man (Jude) meets a woman whose birth he had assisted in over a couple of decades ago. This woman (Gretchen) is the only "normal" character in her otherwise quirky family. The interplay between the family members and other supporting cast is quite amusing and original, and there is some dialogue dealing with love and death that is truly moving (e.g., pay attention to what the "Music from another room" stands for, absolutely lyrical).

This is not your average uber-classy fare with geewhiz cinematography or hard-hitting emotional melodrama. It is a simple story of relentless love and devotion, with a pace that you could wrap a cushy evening around. But one thing this confirms yet again is that, man, can Jude Law act! He is confident, credible and very honest with his role as a lovelorn delivery boy (one which he was apparently the first to proclaim in a UK entertainment channel interview that wasn't "his type").

Finally, a surprise that you'll surely not be prepared for comes from Jennifer Tilly (you'll remember her from innumerable side roles, e.g., Jim Carrey's client in Liar Liar) who is simply wonderful in her potrayal of a blind woman's whims and insecurities. Easily her best role to date!

If you aren't expecting a When Harry Met Sally, I'd recommend this movie in a blink.

Summary: Beautiful "Music"
Review: I just loved this very romantic movie (besides being a rabid Jude Law fan...) I've seen it at least 5 or 6 times, and will be purchasing it today. I found it to be very uplifting, not to mention hilarious comedy, especially the scenes of Anna's birth as well as Martha Plimpton's scathing diatribe in the restaurant. Maybe some cheesy parts, but the coin tossing was endearing, and Savage Garden's "Truly, Madly, Deeply" is the perfect choice for Danny and Anna's choice of each other.

Summary: Music From Another Room sucks you in...
Review: I had never seen this movie until 2 months ago. It's now my favorite film. It sucks you in. It's one of those movies that you just don't want to end, and once it does you watch it again and again. I rented it for 2 days and watched it 5 times. It's about finding some one who is right for you, even if that means doing something that people might not expect from you. It's about making choices: go the normal route or believe in something more and take a chance. Take a leap and find out what's really out there. That's the decision Anna Swan must make. Some of the scenes are very very cheesy, but they can be over looked because once the film is over it's simply too good to be cheesy. The characters grow and change and in the end...
You'll have to watch to find out. But take a chance on this movie. You'll be happy you did.

Summary: Hey, Jude!!
Review: I fell in love with Jude Law in "The Talented Mr. Ripley," but in this movie, "Music From Another Room," he plays a character who is actually worthy of my affection!! Aside from the butterflies for Jude, this is a laugh-out-loud AND cry movie! It has character depth: I love the excentric, drama-queen mother; the hispanic, strong-but-insecure boyfriend; the blind and so-inSIGHTful sister; and you'll all recognize from TV and other movies - the cheating husband character - Jeremy Piven (yum-yum)!!
I only buy movies on DVD format that I already love. I bought this one!!!

Summary: A movie about true love
Review: If you like movies like the Princess Bride and Titanic, you will like this one even more. It is my favorite movie w/ Jude. One of his first roles too. I hope the real Jude Law is like this character.
