Summary: I had heard this film was bad, but it's fantastic
Review: A film that actual manages some social commentary while being entertaining. I think the people who take Beatty to task for rapping and being insulting to black people, may have missed the entire point. He's not sparing any group here. The film skewers the media, special interest groups and Washington. I guess it's good that it seems to have stirred up some controvery, because this is a film that avoids playing it safe. It's wonderfully photographed, well scored and well acted by all concerned. Beatty gives a young kid the biggest laugh in the film when he's talking to an LA cop. One HUGE negative: the DVD includes no added features of any kind, other than the trailer, which is not a special feature. I would never ever buy any DVD that doesn't offer special features.

Summary: Great movie, but poorly advertised.
Review: When I saw the previews for this movie, I thought it looked like another one of those, and I'm honestly not trying to offend anyone, "black", racial (not racist, there's a difference) movies. What I mean exactly by the above discription, is I thought it was one of those movies that sterotyped everybody of the same one race. In those movies and shows, only the people who are like those sterotypes can relate to it and possibly like it, and the ones who aren't can't relate to it and won't like it. The show "Martin" starring Martin Lawrence is like that. And I hate those kind of productions. I can't stand them. To me, they're very degrading and stupid. Once again, I don't mean to offend anyone, or invalidate their opinion. If you like those types of films and shows, OK. Fine. Anyway, that's what I thought when I saw the previews for this movie, so naturally I was very disinterested about this movie. But, oh, how wrong was I! The previews were just innacurate. The movie wasn't a racial movie at all. It was a good comedy, like the movie "Dave" (starring Kevin Klein and Sigorny Weaver) to an extent, where a politician turns into an actual human being.

Some of the viewers had some very good down-side points about the movie. It seems to me these views were not all about opinion, but also interpretation. So you might agree with some or all of these points. After reading these, I'm not sure of which ones I agree with and which ones I don't. But I still like this movie, and would see it again.

Summary: truly awful
Review: Everything about this movie is bad. The politics are liberal socialist nonsense. Warren Beatty's "rapping" is embarassing to watch, and I believe insulting to blacks. Why is it that Beatty believes the only way to communicate and identifying with black people is to rap. Truly insulting. One of the worst movies I have seen.

Summary: A rebuttal to negative reviewers
Review: Those of you who dismiss this film as an attack on insurance companies, or as a simplistic solution to complicated problems seem to be suffering from a great deal of short-sightedness. For one, if you are unable to see the stranglehold that big business has on everyday society (black, white, brown, red, yellow or otherwise), then you are probably in no danger of seeing the point of this film. Furhtermore, I do not feel comfortable with making films responsible for coming up with the solutions to difficult problems, as one of the reviewers seems to expect. This film is doing a great deal more than the rest of the cinematic dreck being produced by simply causing people to start asking more important questions. A funny, bold, and importtant film.

Summary: Breathtakingly awful
Review: This movie left me and the rest of our household speechless. It is the story of a corrupt man who has lost all sense of balance and goes insane. He uses his political position to make speeches about corruption, generalizing his own lack of decency to other politicians. The movie shows him gaining acceptance in a depraved underworld of filthy-mouthed criminals equally lacking in values and social conscience. He falls in love with a hired assassin. I knew from the beginning that the movie would be a braindead social commentary, but I quickly switched to sympathy for Warren Beatty that he has degenerated from a legitimate actor to a director glorifying mentally unstable people.

Summary: Extremely Over Rated!!!
Review: This movie seems to say that democracy is bad, but I will promise you it is better than the alternatives. Sure we have some problems in this country, but anyone who thought this movie was great should move to Russia, or perhaps Kosovo and see what life is like over there. The idea of a US Senator becoming a rapper is ludicrous, and degrading to the honorable office that is the US Senate. This movie stinks, and I would give it zero stars if that was a choice.

Summary: unmittigated garbolio
Review: As a political statement it really sucks. The implication that a politician who suddenly becomes honest turns into a raving socialist requires a strong stomach. The film also qualifies as hate mongering..... implying that insurance company execs are murderous criminals and criminals are merely social activists.

If you have libertarian or conservative leanings avoid this pathetic film.

Summary: One of the smartest political satires I've seen in years.
Review: Warren Beatty and the other guy who wrote the script have made one of the...most inventive movies of the year. The script is smart, consistently funny, and the plot is very original. I may sound stupid here...but why wasn't this nominated for more than just BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY? It should have at least been nominated for BEST ACTOR. I've seen a bunch of movies that came out in 1998, all except for the ones that haven't came to video yet. See... I rent movies. I very rarely go the the theater. This movie has made my TOP TEN list for 1998. Whoever hasn't seen this movie is in for a treat. It's worth WHATEVER price you have to pay to rent it.

Summary: An unexpectedly great film!
Review: Warren Beatty has made a fantastic film that manages to balance dozens of characters at a lightning fast pace all in well under two hours. The cast is perfection and you won't see a better crafted film all year.

Summary: A modern _Candide_
Review: This is an incredible movie. It is a modern _Candide_. It makes fun of America and the political system which screws over the little guy for big business. This is possibly the best movie I have seen. Just be prepared to be made fun of. Just keep an open mind; this film will be written off as complete drivel by the close minded bigot amd idolized by those who try to understand it. I am surprised anything this good actualy came out of hollywood.
