Summary: Underappreciated Comedy
Review: This movie was panned by a number a critics upon its release in theaters, and I haven't a clue as to why.

Mike Myers, whom I'm not the biggest fan of, hits the bullseye in his portrayal of the neurotic Charlies MacKenzie, a young man who is so afraid of commitment that he spends as much time trying to think up reasons to end his relationships with members of the opposite sex as he does in enjoying the relationships. Myers, who has a penchant for portraying multiple characters in his movies, also plays his own father--a man who's convinced that Colonel Sanders puts an addictive chemical in his chicken to "...make you crave it fortnightly."

The beautiful Nancy Travers, as Harriet, enters Charlie's life when he stops in one day at her butcher shop to buy his father some haggas (sp?). After dating and often hilarious miscommunications, they marry. Then Charlie's imagination starts to get carried away (again) as he suspects his new bride as being an axe murderer who kills her new husbands while on their honeymoon.

The other characters that fill out this movie are truly wonderful. You have, Tony, played by Anthony LaPaglia, Charlie's best friend and a cop who can't seem to find any satisfaction with his job. In his words to his Captain: "When I became a cop I thought I was going to be Serpico, but now I feel like Fish on Barney Miller." He goes on to say that he yearns to hang from that "thing on the bottom of a helicopter" (a la the opening credits of "McCloud," starring Dennis Weaver).

Funny stuff!

Other characters include Alan Arkin in an uncredited role of Tony's precinct captain, who LaPaglia believes is "too nice" to be a police captain. Arkin's artificial transformation into a abusive, bigotted, out-of-control cop (to please LaPaglia) is worth the price of rental alone. Then you have in smaller roles: Brenda Fricker, playing Charlie's mother, who has the hots for Tony--and isn't shy about making him aware of it, even in front of her son; Phil Hartman, as "Vicki," a tour guide for Alcatraz; Charles Grodin, as a uncooperative private citizen; and Amanda Plummer, as Rose, Harriet's mysterious sister who is definitely more than she originally passes herself off as. Michael Richards, Kramer on Seinfeld, also has a small cameo as a very insensitive and incendiary obituary critic.

Worthy of ownership and repeated viewing!

Summary: It really IS a comedy classic...
Review: Mike hit his peak here - I love Austin Powers, but "So I Married..." is WAY better. It's just a very well written and acted comedy that will keep you laughing from start to finish.

"We've got a piper dooownnn", "Hard hearted harbinger of haggis" and "Head!!!...!"... the list of quoatable quotes goes on and on : - )

Buy this one, you'll watch it way more than once.

Summary: A romantic comedy that's actually FUNNY
Review: If you think about the genre, about 80% of romantic comedies are pretty awful, 10% are worth watching, and another 10% are truly great (think Annie Hall, Something About Mary or The Princess Bride). "So I Married an Axe Murderer" falls in this last category. The characters are wonderful, the story is extremely engaging, and the comedy will make you laugh out loud. Add to this some hilarious cameos by Alan Arkin, Charles Grodin, and Steven Wright, AND a smashing soundtrack, and you've got yourself a classic film.

The only complaint I have about the DVD is that it is pretty thin on the extras (but the trailer, I have to say, is brilliant). Nevertheless, I give this film my highest recommendation. It is one of my all-time favorites.

Summary: Highly Underrated Myers Film-Great Cast Performances To Boot
Review: Mike Myers stars as Charlie MacKenzie; a guy that is hung up on finding that perfect woman for him. Charlie's friend Tony Giardino (Anthony LaPaglia) states that Charlie has dumped several really great gals. Charlie insists that his last girlfriend smelled like SOUP! Charlie meets Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis) whilst buying a haggis for his mom in a "Meats Of The World" butcher shop where Harriet works . Thus, the romance ensues. Little does Charlie know that Harriet has MANY deep, dark secrets in her closet.

Mike Myers does a lot of improv plus he plays Charlie's father, Stuart, who has some of the best lines and bits in the movie.

Brenda Fricker is also excellent as Charlie's mom, May.

Amanda Plummer plays Harriet's strange and odd sister, Rose.
Some great cameos like the late, great Phil Hartman as an Alcatraz prison guide named "Vicky", Michael Richards, Maureen O'Boyle, Alan Arkin, Debi Mazar, Charles Grodin, and Glen Vernon to name just a few.

If you like Mike Myers humor this is a "must see"!

Happy Watching!

Summary: Great cast!
Review: Cannot add much that hasn't been said, except that this movie is really one of those rare ensemble cast-gems! I would have liked hanging out with Charley and his friends and family -- well maybe not Rose.

(I agree that the DVD lacks the extras that all true fans would want!)

Summary: Must see for Mike Myers fans
Review: I absolutely love this movie! I still laugh even though I've seen it a lot! One thing I found is that people either love it or hate it...there's really no in between where they said it's "okay". There are so many quoteable lines, especially the character of Stuart McKenzie (the father). I think you have to be a fan of Mike Myers or understand his type of humor to really appreciate it. This movie goes more for laughs than a strong plot/story of whether Harriet (Nancy Travis) is the axe murderer mentioned in the tabloids (or "The Paper" as Brenda Ficker's character refers to it).
Watch it and see if you don't start talking with a Scottish brogue.
