Summary: When did you fall in love with Hip Hop?
Review: Brown Suger is one of the best movies that I have watched.
Its great message about real Hip Hop attracted me into buying the DVD.
The cast is perfect, and the plot is exciting and refreshing.
Sanaa Lathan is beautiful and plays the part perfect.
If you love Hip Hop, buy it.

Summary: Sanaa, Sanaa, Sanaa
Review: Every time I see her she is pining for someone. First it was Wesley in Disappearing Acts (an HBO movie), then Omar Epps in Love and Basketball, and now Taye Diggs in this one. May I add, she was pining for Taye in the Best Man, too, and this movie is nothing but Love and Basketball part 2, only Sanaa's character's name is Sidney, the ball has been replaced with hip-hop, and Omar replaced by Taye, spiced with a little Nicole Ari Parker, Boris Kodjoe, and Her Highness Queen Latifah. Sanaa, you need a new agent, and get yourself some new scripts. Or at least a new, fresh leading man. The movie is entertaining enough, but no originality, used storyline, and Taye is not convincing in his love for hip-hop. You can tell his "flava" is about as rehearsed as the script. The soundtrack KICKS ASSSSS though!

Review: A predictable romanceA light satire on commercial hip-hop with an implausibley successful rap duo who are painfully unfunny. Successful African-American characters are mostly uninteresting, one-dimensional, except for Taye Diggs' character, who is the conflicted manager of a pop-rap record company that embraces commercial value over keepin' it real artists.

Summary: Worth Seeing for Diggs and Lathan...
Review: ...the chemistry is undeniable and unmistakable and the film lights up when they are allowed to perform together, but alas, the story is a well worn one, albeit one with a hip-hop twist. Question: is Mos Def in every drama/comedy which features a rap artist wanting to be true to his craft? (think about that). Lathan, in particular, can act damn well. So well in fact that one wishes to see her in parts not designed for a woman of color. Or give her leads ala Halle.

Review: This movie was beautiful to look at -- with no volume. I love hip hop but this movie went into overkill. The entire plot was predictable. Give me a break, here we go again. And Latifah. Great actress. But she has her own sexual-political agenda, psssst, if y'know what I mean. Another yawn of a Black movie

Summary: Too Much "Sugar," and Not Enough Spice.
Review: The film may call itself "Brown Sugar," but the aftertaste is closer to NutraSweet. Beneath the gloss and impressive cast is a standard love story with a hip hop twist. Sanaa Latham and Taye Diggs are Sid and Dre, two childhood friends who are professionals in the hip hop industry. They clearly have strong feelings for each other that extend far beyond the platonic, but they've never actually pursued a relationship. Matters get complicated when Dre marries a striking beauty (Nicole Ari Parker) while Sid gets romantically involved with a baldheaded pretty boy (Boris Kodjoe). What happens from there is so predictable that anyone could summarize the "follow-your-heart" plot long before the film is over. It doesn't help that Diggs is miscast as hip hop music mogul Dre. Taye's acting abilities have been limited to polished, hunky leading men ("How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "The Best Man"), and he just doesn't pull it off as a street-savvy businessman. As well as he wears his outfits, Diggs struggles in a role that, say, Omar Epps would have totally nailed. The smaller parts by Queen Latifah and Mos Def are the only two performances that give this film any spark, and maybe that's because, as rappers, they have a stronger connection to hip hop culture than anyone else in the cast. I'd hesitate to call "Brown Sugar" a bad movie, but it doesn't offer much of a challenge nor does it deviate from material we've seen in other, better movies.

Summary: OH-Kay.....................
Review: OH my goodness.... I did like this movie, not love. It was semi funny although very predictable. Now come on ladies, Taye is fine as hell but you'd choose him over Boris are you freaking crazy?!?! There is no way. With that said it was entertaining a lot of hip hoppers I love, and Queen and Mos Def were great. I'd say rent it and not expect too much. My motto Postive Blacks so I would say do it rent it buy it support our people!

Review: I know how this film was going to unfold in the first ten minutes..The performances by Mos Def and Queen Latifa are good but the rest of the cast "sleep-walks" through this one. It's not a film I would think about seeing more than once...

Summary: FEEL GOOD BLACK MOVIE OF 2002!!! Loved it to "DEF"!!
Review: This movie was beyond fantastic! Maybe some hip-hop heads may think it's too "touchy-feely" for them, but contrary to their veiw, this movie was beyond what I expected. I liked the movie so much I saw it 3 times in the theaters... FOR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER HAD A DEEP FRIENDSHIP THAT BLOSSOMED INTO A PASSIONATE & MEMORABLE ROMANCE, THIS MOVIE IS A MUST-SEE... I could relate all the way through... I love the way this movie was put together... Presented the classy, soulful sides of the Black community. Two thumbs up to the director! This film truely encompasses my 3 greatest love affairs-- BLACK MUSIC, BLACK LOVE, & TRUE FRIENDSHIP.

Summary: Cute but not great
Review: The best thing about this movie was Mos Def. The man has acting skillz and should explore them immediately. The rest of the movie was a big disspointment to me. This has nothing on the movie The Best Man. This one is pretty lame...although the soundtrack is pretty cool.
