Summary: Very Funny!!
Review: This movie is about the prince of Africa, who by the way is Eddie Murphy. On his birthday, he learns that he is to be married to a sex slave. He wants a better, less rich style than that he has at this current time. He goes to America to "Sow his royal oats". This movie is one of the most funny movies. I laughed so hard that my eyes were watering and my side ached. Arsenio Hall plays his friend, and that is funny too.

Summary: Separated at birth?
Review: Is it my imagination, or does the third actor (Clint Brown) in the barbershop scenes look a lot like the talented and often overlooked CLINT HOWARD (Austin Powers, Apollo 13 and every other Ron Howard Movie). Great Make-up all around. Funny movie also.

Summary: I used to like it......Eddie Needs to Expand His Range
Review: As if the real beauty of Africa cannot stand on its own, there are some genuinely funny scenes in the movie. But the dead leopard skin on his Tuxedo in the Beginning of the movie and the Palatial Estate was meant to SHOW people how impressive Africa really is? Africa is really dark, humid, dank, dangerous, and it has some very beautiful areas. Being African American I rather be subject to the truth and not a Hollywood Version of What Africa is. As far as realism is concerned (For a Better Perspective of the Motherland) see Out of Africa and When We were Kings. Not all African Women are Subserviant as suggested in this movie.

Summary: Fantastic comedy
Review: Coming to America is absolutely THE funniest movie I've probably ever seen. The bathers are so ridiculous, I laugh outloud even before the scene with them washing Eddie Murphy in the beginning. Not only is it a hilarious comedy, this movie is also a slight romance... everything a girl could ask for. :) This is one of my favorites.

Summary: Not Only Funny But The African Court Costumes Are Stunning
Review: From Queen Aeollian's 'around the Palace' wear to the Chosen Bride's incredible golden gown, with a train that goes on forever, to a wedding dress that must be seen to be believed, (Princess Di eat your heart out!). But I've always wondered, what became of the rejected Bride? I mean, she's been raised to be the perfect Princess and now that's all off - isn't she likely to be a little upset? Not to mention her family, might there be political repercussions? Am I taking this premise much to seriously? Undoubtedly!

Summary: a modern Black classic
Review: One of Eddie's funniest works. I look at this movie over 10 years later and still laugh at the same jokes just as hard as I did the first time I saw it.

Summary: The King of Comedy
Review: Hilarious tale of an African prince named Akeem (Murphy) and his royal servant (Hall) who head off to the United States in search of the perfect Queen. After deciding to go to New York City (they saw that the city had a borough named "Queens"), Akeem becomes a pauper in order to woo the perfect woman (Shari Headley) to become his wife.

Although the film had many pre and post-production problems (director Landis almost walked off the set due to a fight with Murphy; Murphy was successfully sued by columnist Art Buchwald for "stealing" his idea of an African prince who goes in search of a wife) the final production is pure comic genius at it's best. Undeniabley, Murphy is the king of a thousand faces. Just like his success in doing multiple roles in such films at the "Nutty Professor," in this film he plays 4 roles.

Besides Akeem, Murphy is hysterical as the barbershop owner, the old Jewish man who frequents the barbershop, and finally as the talentless singer Randy Jackson (who performs with his band "Sexual Chocolate"). Makeup artists Rick Baker does a spectacular job as always when creating the different personas.

Shot mostly in New York, this happens to be Murphy's last great comedy during his years at Paramount. Most of his later films such as "Harlem Nights," "Distinguished Gentleman," and "Another 48 Hours," were not big box office hits. With a recent string of hits produced by Imagine/Universal, Murphy is back to his comedic genius.

Keep an eye out for a pre-"ER" Eriq LaSalle as Daryl, the Soul-Glo King, and Samuel L. Jackson as a guy who holds-up the McDowell's (not "McDonald's"--watch the film to understand why) restaurant. Other celebrity players such as James Earl Jones, Louie Anderson, and Frankie Faison give the film more comic momemts. Also, several band members of the great funk group "Cameo," appear as members of the band "Sexual Chocolate".

Before Martin Lawrence, there was Eddie Murphy. Check out this film to see one of the greatest comic geniuses at work.
