Review: This is a great movie with great scenes and hilarious comedy

Summary: Banal & predictable, Witherspoon et al can't save it
Review: We generally like chick flicks a lot, and looked forward to this romantic comedy after the funny and entertaining "Legally Blonde" gave us Witherspoon in great form. Alas, the plot in this one is so predictable, it's almost crystal clear what's up as soon as Reese travels from the Big Apple back to her home in Alabama. Her cheerful good lucks could hardly compete with the aw' shucks personna of her mother (Mary Kay Place), her still hubby Jake (Josh Lucas), and her confederate lovin' dad (Fred Ward); nor the big city slicker look of her intended (Patrick Dempsey) and his mom, a swearin' tycoonish mayor played to a tee by Candice Bergen. Actually, the whole ensemble does a really decent job -- it's just that they have so little plot to deal with they all come across as hackneyed stereotypes. While there was little or nothing to offend, there was also precious little to find remarkable or memorable. Like a bite-sized candy bar, it's sweet but over quick, leaving little satisfaction and a hunger for more and better. -------
Overall, just mildly entertaining and relatively disappointing. Let's bring Reese back in a venue worth her while!

Summary: Your average rom-com
Review: After building herself a successful life in New York with her own designing company, Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) couldn't be happier especially when the man of her dreams (Patrick Dempsey) proposes to her.

However in order for her to move on to her future, she must bury her past which means returning to her hometown Alabama to settle a divorce with ex lover (Josh Lucas). However is Melanie truly ready to forget what she once had and move on with her new love and secondly can she successfully hide her shameful past from her current boyfriend.
Romantic comedy which becomes a battle of the classes- between the rich and the poor. Although predictable and average, this rom-com still manages to pull in a few laughs with good performanaces from all characters.

Summary: Deja vu
Review: Hmmmmm, seems I've seen this story before. Oh, Yeah. Doc Hollywood. The ONLY difference is "Melanie" was familiar with this country town. The big difference is Doc Hollywood was fun to watch. This movie is so much formula, there is not one ounce of creative juice in this flick.

Yes, Reese is adorable, but that does not make a movie. The people and story were flat, predictable and of no interest. Complete waste of my time.

Summary: Worth Watching - Once
Review: I had high hopes for "Sweet Home". It looked like a sweet love story about a lost girl who lost her way.

I wasn't impressed. It was a decent movie, certainly better than some of the other movies out there, and was good to watch on a night when nothing else was on TV. However, I found many flaws in the movie that left me with an unsatisfied feeling once it ended.

THe main flaw was the character of Melanie (Witherspoon) herself. She was so self centered and cruel throughout the entire movie that no matter which suitor she chose I felt she didn't deserve him. There was no "moment of transformation" for her in the story, no realizations, no uncovering of what she left behind, to justify any choice she makes by the conclusion. Plus, both her beaus were such terrific guys that I felt bad for whichever she threw over. Neither of her suitors had any flaws (other than financial status) and both seemed to love Melanie so deeply that I found myself congratulating the beau who lost her and screaming, "She doesnt deserve you!" to the one she chose. When you cannot connect to the main character, it ruins the whole story.

The fault is really in the character development and plot. A viewer needs to feel the character learned something, or see the character's moment of realization, but none of that exists in this movie. The one bright spot is Candance Bergen as Melanie's future mother-in-law and the Mayor of New York, and I can't help but smile at the obvious similiarities between Melanie's fiance to JKF Jr.

It's worth a viewing because it's light and quaint and has a chuckle or two, but be warned, you may not like Melanie by the end!

Summary: JOSH LUCAS ~ What a HOTTIE!!
Review: This was an adorable romantic comedy. Light and fun!! Don't try to read a lot into it just sit back and enjoy the film. It was a wonderful love story!

Reese Witherspoon was darling in the film as Melanie but my heart belongs to Josh Lucas as Jake. For someone who doesn't feel he's a good comedic actor ~ he was fantastic! I hope we see more of Josh Lucas as a leading man in the future!!!

Summary: I wanted to like this movie, I did
Review: I really wanted to like this movie. I live in one of the towns where parts of it were shot. I was hoping because of Reese Witherspoon being from the South, perhaps the movie wouldn't be quite so insulting to Southerners. But, I was wrong.
I have lived in Georgia my whole life. My husband is from Alabama, so I speak from experience. Neither of us have ever heard a woman, be she from small town or not, speak of a nursing baby as "being on the ..." I've also never known my friends to carry babies about in bars. But, hey. I also do not think most Southern men would be amazed by the mechanics of a recliner. We do have those new fangled things down here.
But honestly, if they had just lightened up on the hick treatment and treated the Alabamans with a bit more respect in some ways, I might have enjoyed the movie more. It did have promise. Great stars. I think RW is an excellent actress. Josh Lucas is very cute, Ethan Embry is one of my favorite actors and drool worthy as well. Candice Bergen is also excellent. Jean Smart, Mary Kay Place, Fred Ward, Patrick Dempsey, etc. All of them talented, strong actors. But still. I can't get past the stereotyped parts.
I think if you want to see a Southern movie, with some good treatment of the region, see "To Kill A Mockingbird" or "Steel Magnolias," even. "Norma Rae" is also good. These depictions are more true to life. Or at least life as I've known it.
No, the South isn't perfect, yes we have problems, but darnit, we aren't all socially inept people who give war whoops and say crass things and throw up at our wedding. We don't blow holes in the gazebo with firecrackers and granddaddy doesn't spend all of his time in a Confederate uniform. Hollywood needs to understand that.

Summary: Rent before you buy
Review: I enjoy movies of this genre, but Sweet Home Alabama let me down. The cast was talented but there was so little character development and so many holes in the plot. I was disappointed because the idea had so much potential. If you want a movie about city slickers finding out they prefer the down home life try another cheesy one: Doc Hollywood...the characters are more developed, the plot makes sense, and it's still cheesy and makes you feel good! Too bad, but this one missed the mark in my book.

Summary: Holy cow!
Review: Here again I am writing a review on a new movie that I wish that I could get back the two hours on my life that I wasted on this horrid film. They could have ended it about an hour into the movie. Very predictable and very boring. Please please, don't waste your time on this movie. The alternate ending was really bad and it epitomizes the rest of this very bad movie.
