Rating: Summary: A bit off topic Review: While visiting my daughter in NJ from the west coast, she took me to the Met for the first time. In the week before we went, we watched this movie twice. The day of the opera, she kept saying, let's go get our nails done. I just couldn't get into it. I told her (sincerely), "I don't see why. It's not like we're going to be meeting Nicholas Cage there". Well, we saw Carmen, and as exciting as it was on its own, the experience was heightened by having the memories of this charming movie running through our minds.
Rating: Summary: Hello! Review: 4 words: Great movie, Great CHER! She is so cool. I love this movie. i bet I have watched it over 100 times and I am still not sick of it. Nicholas Cage is good in the movie too. Truely a heart warming comedy. I feel like watching it right now.!
Rating: Summary: Why do men chase women? Review: This is just one of the questions asked and answered in this little gem of a movie. (btw, the answer is "Maybe because they fear death." Both sweet and tart, it has just the right blend of humor, melancholy, and true love. Cher is at her best here as Loretta Castorini, a widow who falls in love with the younger brother of her fiance, Nicholas Case and Danny Aiello respectively--both equally amazing in these roles. Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia round out the case as Loretta's parents. Feodor Chaliapin Jr. is priceless as Loretta's dog-doting grandfather and catch John Mahoney before he became "Frasier"'s dad.My favorite scene is the where Loretta first meets Johnny at the bakery. Nicholas Cage gives the funniest, saddest speech about his past. I know the whole scene by heart.
Rating: Summary: That's Amore! Review: What a great film! When it's over you know you had a great time watching it and have this wonderful feeling of things working out. That cast is perfect, the chemistry works and that italian charm comes across. Teaming up these actors was a stroke of genius, especially Nicolas Cage igniting the spark Cher who then turns from wallflower into an astounding late-blooming Italian beauty. (But face it, Cher is always breathtaking, no matter what she sings, plays, wears or just had operated on)
Rating: Summary: Why isnt this movie in Widescreen? Review: This is a fantastic movie....I would buy it in a second...all those features and commentary sound wonderful but I wont buy this DVD until it comes out widescreen.
Rating: Summary: Moonstruck by Moonstruck Review: "Moonstruck" is my favorite movie of all time! I just love Cher in this movie. I won't forget the first time I saw Cher's name in the opening credits to a movie (see Cher as nothing less than a lesbian mortuary beautician in "Silkwood"). I thought, "Cher!? Cher can't act!" She sure showed me though: Such an acting talent, and Loretta is incredibly likeable in "Moonstruck." What strikes me most about "Moonstruck," what I simply love, and what makes it such a fantastic story is all the themes running through this movie: Watch for dogs & wolves, great food, an obsession with death, forthright honesty, and that ever-present moonlit romance! My favorite scene: When Loretta is telling Pop she's getting married: "You did this once before it didn't work out." My favorite line: Pop at the dinner table: "I don't wanna talk about it!" Even though this movie is as perfect as they come, part of the fun of rewatching this so many times is musing about two things: Is Cher choking back an actress' laugh when she's coming out of the closet in the bedroom, right before "I should have taken a rock and killed myself years ago." And, is Pop's calling the engagement ring a "baby's ring" an actor's misquote that was left to be beautifully incorporated into the dialogue? Make a plate of spaghetti, grab an Italian soda, and get ready to just plain feel good watching "Moonstruck" again and again! Double 5 stars means get double copies!!!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, entertaining Film, but Full Screen Only?????? Review: This was probably one of the best films of the 80's. I cannot say enough good things about it. Entertaining, funny and heartwarming. Cher and Dukakis and all the others were just fantastic.
Rating: Summary: Great movie, bad DVD treatment. Review: A cute, romantic comedy. Great scenes of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Very good character development, and Cher and Nicolas Cage work very well together. Olympia Dukakis does a great job as an emotionally deep, morally strong mother with a sense of humour. Great music too, though the 5.1 mix was not very dynamic. Sound stays mainly in the center channel, which itself was muddy, making dialogue difficult to follow at times. The video was pan and scan, which ruins it in my book.
Rating: Summary: Give me a break! Review: I just watched the DVD of Moonstruck. I have watched the VHS version many times and this is a revelation--spectacular sound and picture, doing justice to what I think was one of the top three movies of the 80's. To those who don't like the full-screen format, two comments: (1) See Jerry Jancarik's note posted here and (2) You have got to be kidding! This movie would be great viewed via broadcast on a b/w 2-inch handheld. In DVD, on any format TV, this is dazzling entertainment. To those who have not seen it, do not let the naysayers put you off: get it, watch it and love it!
Rating: Summary: Romantic but not mushy, just perfect Review: I usually avoid romantic comedies, but I happen to like Cher; even then, when my mom rented this movie I thought: "Pooh, a romantic comedy! Do I have to go through this to see Cher?" Well, I was never more glad to have to eat my own words; this was quality. The acting was excellent, the plot was great, and my mom and I fell in love with Johnny, the dreamy, no-good baker portrayed by Nicholas Cage. Cher was also great in her role as Loretta, the repressed widow resigned to marry some mamma's boy without loving him. That part of Johnny and Loretta's night out, when they accidentally meet her father and his mistress at the opera was so good, I rewinded the tape and watched it again. And Loretta's mother dining with the stranger... well, those are the highlights, but on the whole it was a wonderful movie. If you're like me and don't like most romantic comedies, just give this one a try, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised.
