Summary: A Marilyn movie to make you smile
Review: This is one of my favorite Marilyn movies. The reason this is is because no other movie of her's is a 'full blown Marilyn' project. This is HER film. Jane Russel just seems to step aside in this one and give Marilyn the show. The singing, the dancing, the one liners, the skits, it's all Marilyn. Even though Jane and Marilyn both sang 'Diamonds are a girls best friend', it was Marilyn's version that went down in history. No other movie revolves around MM like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Simply said it was taylor made for her. The plot itself is pretty light, as were most 1950's musicals, but to watch it makes you realize why Marilyn was idolized by millions.

Summary: The Marilyn we all know and love
Review: GPBs is probably the all-time favorite Marilyn movie. She sings, she dances, she has her one-liners, and she goes through the movie as if on air. Her whispery voice and child-like laugh are other Marilyn trademarks that her fans love so much. There is a brunette however, Jane Russel simply handed this movie over to Marilyn (after all she was the blond!) The costumes, the songs, the gags, they all make this movie a joy to watch. Maybe the plot is a bit thin and silly, but this was the fifties, easier and lighter times. I love Marilyn and this is never too far from the VCR.

Summary: The Musical Numbers are Great--Fast-Foward Through The Rest
Review: We can be grateful for a few things--Carol Channing was not asked to play Lorelei Lee, and in the wake of the nude pin-up scandal involving Monroe, the costume designer rethought her costume for the "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number and costumed her in modest, stylish pink.

We can also be grateful for the Jule Style-Sammy Cahn score, which is full of good songs, all of them sung well indeed by Monroe and co-star Jane Russell (Monroe's panicky incompetence with dialogue disappeared when she sang--the voice wasn't pitch-perfect, but her timing and emotional shadings were superb). And Russell is perfect as Dorothy, the voice of cynical sanity (i.e., Anita Loos) observing the triumph of brainless pulchritude.

Or at least that's how Loos wrote it back in 1926. In 1953, Lorelei Lee is a pretty smart gold-digger, which is a touch more credible than Loos' original character, who is so brain dead that she can't seem to fathom the connection between her distribution of sexual favors and the distribution of financial favors that it inspires in various men, but not as funny. THIS Lorelei is so smarted-up that she can calculate the exact number of minutes it will take to charm an exact amount of money out of her drippy fiancee. Even worse, Russell has been paired romantically with Elliot Reid, who is an able comedian and character actor, but not the sort of fellow who winds up in clinches with an amazon like Russell. Howard Hawks moves things along briskly but impersonally--there's none of the brisk, funny sex chatter here that marks his best films. I miss it.

Summary: I just adore diamonds, don't you?
Review: Like a big tall glass of Kristal! Is there anything better? It tingles my toes and tickles my nose and makes me giddy with delight everytime. Lorelei Lee is just about the smartest girl I ever met. And her friend Dorothy is nice too.

Summary: GREAT
Review: A great movie filled with unforgetable songs that you'll be singing for a week. Monroe and Russell are excellent. If your a Monroe fan you have to have this movie. She's so good it acting stupid.

Summary: visually pleasing but dry as dust
Review: Marilyn is great. Jane Russell is great. They are both gorgeous and dress very well. The color is magnificent. Unfortunately, the film is empty and unsatisfying. Not nearly as risque as It thinks it is nor as clever. Howard Hawks could be as stilted and shallow director as any of our modern ones. Pity. Imagine what a Sturges or a Von Sternberg or even a Allan Dwan could have done with this. See it once. Parts of it a nice, particulary the musical numbers. But, once seen, it will fade from the viewer's mind with surprising ease.

Summary: Marilyn's the blonde most gentleman prefer
Review: Not a work of art, but alot of fun, Gentleman Prefer Blondes is one of those movies that is great to curl up with on a rainy day. A comedy with lots of song and dance numbers that show off Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell to best effect, it is the story of two nightclub performers from Little Rock who set out to snag themselves millionaire husbands. Loralei & Dorothy set sail for France, and become embroiled in on-board hi-jinx, Loralei using her abundant charms to try and entice a rich industrialist to part with his diamonds, and Dorothy dueling with the private detective hired by Loralei's fiancee to keep an eye on her. The usual mishaps ensue, and it all ends happy as would be expected, so don't expect a brain workout, but it is an enjoyable vehicle for the two stars, with lavish costuming and sets all in glorious 1950's colour; and Marilyn & Jane bounce off each other well, getting some witty lines that send up both themselves as sex symbols, and also the maneaters they portray. And of course, there's that classic Monroe moment - the "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" number, which shows Marilyn at her glamourous, iconically beautiful best. Everyone should see that number at least once, and for Monroe fans, Blondes is an interesting example of the dumb blonde roles the studios would have liked to keep her in forever. It's not to everyone's taste - those who don't appreciate Marilyn often find it a bit embarrassing, but perhaps an interest piece for you to try on your own one afternoon if you're curious.
