Summary: Splendid in the theater, but...
Review: ...shallow for video. I recommend people see the movie once. Its indulgences are pretty much in Shakespeare's spirit. It would have been nice to have a few new speeches, however.

Summary: simply awfull
Review: this movie is increably boring and poorly acted and written, any other film of 98 is far better, this is simply a wate

Summary: original
Review: I really enjoyed this film for its originality, wonderful screenplay, good editing and the acting is superb: Paltrow, Fiennes and Dench. I saw it twice until now.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent ensemble cast and witty script!
Review: Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow shine in this romantic, witty film. Shakespeare (Fiennes) has a bad case of writer's block, until he meets the beautiful Viola (Paltrow). A little adventure, a lot of romance, and more puns than Shakespeare's own "Hamlet"! Great story, great actors, great script.....Should have won an Oscar for Fiennes (he should have been nominated at least). A much deserved Best Picture! A must-see even if you are not into 17th-century English literature...

Summary: It's not worth the money.
Review: It's not worth the awards, or all the glamour it received. What a waste. I vote half a star, if even that.

Summary: awesome... shakespeare would have loved it
Review: Beautifully written. The screen was filled with vibrance with characters that seemed truly involved in their roles. The director, cinematographer, and the costumes made Shakespeare in Love a truly remarkable film.

Summary: Shakespeare and Gwenyth, What could be better?
Review: This picture was absolutely deserving of best picture. The academy overlooked the easy choice of "Saving Private Ryan" and went out on a limb. This movie is artistic, the acting is terrific (especially Paltrow, playing three different roles), the costumes, the score, the list is endless. Sure the history majors can point out the flaws, but that's what makes this movie so great, it shows us Shakespeare in a different light. He is human, not some recluse who spits out sonnets. But a man who is truly inspired by life and love. This movie is my all-time favorite, a movie I love to watch on a Sunday curled up on the couch with my loved ones.

Summary: A well acted Shakespearian work.
Review: The Film - I first saw this movie in the states and couldn't wait for it to come out in the U.K I thought with such a fine movie the DVD would be special. Unfortunately I was wrong...

DVD Menus - The menus are functional, nothing more. I don't like the two screen chapter search page, they aren't animated and theres no sound. See Rambo : First Blood, for a really good chapter search!

DVD Quality - The sound and picture are both good.

DVD Extras - Nothing special, Theatrical trailer, reccomendations. Shakespearian facts.

DVD Overall - An Excellent movie, let down considerably by poor DVD backup. There's no imagination in the menus, no real interesting extras.

Why are so many film companies willing to do the bear minimum with their DVD releases ? Especially when they have so much scope.(see Blade)

Still a really good movie though! The 5 stars are for the film, not the DVD itself.

Summary: An Absolutely Wonderful Film
Review: The DVD delivers as far as I am concerned. I loved the film in the theatre, so I was expecting to be a little disappointed when I saw the DVD, but this is not the case. Seldom do I see a film where all elements-- acting, direction sound, music, costume, etc.. -- work so well together. This is a really intelligent screenplay which blends in real people (Marlowe, Webster, etc..) into a fascinating tale of genius and how elements all around, not just Paltrow, contribute to the inspiration of the creative mind. The sequences in which you see the creation, to the rehearsal, to the first performance are often amusing, inspiring, and dramatic. Because so little is known about Shakespeare's life, movies like this, although fictional, offer us another look at the greatest writer in the history of the English language. Outstanding acting!! The final sequence, where you see his formation of Twelfth Night I found very moving. As for the people who didn't like this film, it's a mystery!

Summary: Fabulous!
Review: I am an English teacher who had a sort of "ho-hum" opinion of Shakespeare. Of course I'd read many of his plays, but I couldn't figure out what some of my colleagues were raving about.

Then I saw "Shakespeare in Love." I had recently taught "Romeo and Juliet" to my ninth graders, and this movie gave me a whole new perspective.

This is how I would like to imagine Shakespeare's life actually happening. There is a very real connection between love and stage here. I wish I could show the movie to my students, but of course... I'll just have to settle for the "appropriate" clips.

Even the clips are better than the Zefferelli version of "R and J" because they show the play happening ON STAGE with actors who have to find feeling in the words. I think many students can relate to that.

Love it! Love Shakespeare! Gotta have it!!!
