Review: Great movie! I loved it! It shows the ups and downs of coming out as well as being in love, I really related to it. It wasn't boring - I can't wait to see it again! It was well filmed and well written. A must see! Two thumbs up!

Review: All I can say is that this video was definitely worth the wait. Since I was not fortunate enough to catch this one in the theaters, I have been waiting for about five months to see this movie. I found the instant connection between Kim and Maggie very convincing, Lila's obliviousness to every aspect her daughter's life charming, and Judy's character utterly refreshing. A MUST SEE!

Review: a very nice video. one of the best out this last year. i really enjoied it, it haas the action,drama, comedy, and romance all in one. very yummy actresses and a great movie overall. i really recomend it to everyone. and i also recomend the un-rated version if possible, a defint buyer.

Summary: Better Than Chocolate
Review: This film is set in Vancouver, Canada the third largest city in the country and the largest city in the province of British Columbia. The story looks at Maggie's relationship with her mother and the difficulties associated with telling a parent something about yourself that they are not going to want to hear. In this case the issue is Maggie's sexuality. The sub-plots in the film show what it is like to participate in the gay and lesbian community. That is, the people you are likely to meet and the challanges that will be faced. In the case of the customs story they drew upon an incident where the customs officals for Vancouver took it upon themselves to decide what were appropriate materials. The incident was quite well known as other Gay and Lesbian book stores in the country had no problems importing the same books. The movie overall is a fun light hearted comedy about growing up and falling in love.

Summary: It's Finally Out on Video!
Review: I watched this movie in MA movie theatre. Like many of independent, low-budget films, the film-quality cannot be compared to the upscale Hollywood films but the story-line is of a typical Hollywood Romance Comedy. The movie was excellent! A must see! You will laugh and you will cry and you will laugh again and again! Everyone who left the theatre had a big grin on their face and would giggle at the littlest things like "Out of Order" signs - and if you watch the movie... beleive me you will laugh when you see one yourself! I recommended it to all of my friends and even made it a "girls night out" to see the movie in the theatre... Check it out, for yourself... You will enjoy it too!

Summary: what a flick
Review: Unlike the reviewer above, I LOVED this movie and think it is one of the best Lesbian films ever made. As most of you know, Lesbian movies can be somewhat "cheesy" (for lack of a better word-you know, bad lighting, bad acting, bad film quality) but they seem to be improving and this is the proof. What I thought was the movie's high points WERE it's sub-plots of gay bashing, censorship and discrimination w/in our own gay community. Over all: see it and soon

Summary: Screwball romance meets '90's lesbian chic
Review: This movie will seem very familiar to most long-time movie watchers as it is in many ways a remake of the vintage screwball comedies of the early '30's but with a decidedly '90's twist. The heroine of the film is Maggie, a young woman who has dropped out of university to try and find herself as an artist. She also supplements her income from painting by working at a bookstore which serves the LesBiGayT (Lesbian-Bisexual-Gay-Transsexual) community of a small British Columbian town. Maggie's life is greatly complicated when, on the same day, she begins to fall in love with an itinerant painter named Kim, and she receives word that her mother and teenage brother are going to be coming to town to stay with her. This is particularly problematic because Maggie hasn't disclosed her sexual orientation to her family. A certain amount of predictable hijinks ensue as Maggie tries to keep her family from deducing the truth about her relationship with Kim. She also, of course, must keep them from figuring out that anything is "out-of-place" about her friends and co-workers. As well, there are several sub-plots introduced to give the film more political relevancy, including Canada's strict censorship laws and the subject of anti-transsexual discrimination in the LesBiGayT community, however they are not especially well developed. In conclusion, this film is very funny at some points, but moves very predictably at others. It is a rather light-hearted take on lesbian romance and coming-out issues, but the sub-plots occasionally weigh it down. Since most of the sub-plots contained enough potential to be films of their own, the film-makers could have dropped some of them from this picture to spend more time exploring Maggie and Kim's relationship. That said, I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys romantic comedies and has an open mind.

Review: It is a sexy love story about two young girls who fell in love at first sight. Very attractive role play by Wendy Crewson and Karyn Dwyer. A MUST SEE!

Summary: Probably just as good as chocolate...
Review: Better Than Chocolate is a great movie.. with one or two big flaws. The story is great - it deals with the pain and frustration of coming out (or just figuring out your sexuality), falling in love, losing the one you love, and standing up for what you believe in juxtaposed nicely with commentary on the role of family in ones' life, what constitutes a family, and how we can all become happy with our lives. Quite a lot of themes for just one film. And Better than Chocolate handles each of them fairly well, if only briefly. The actresses portraying Kim, Lila, Judy and Frances are just wonderful. Each of them brings dimension to characters that could easliy have been played in a very one-sided way. They become human rather than just symbols or stock players to fill up Maggie's world. The friendship that develops between Lila and Judy is one of the best parts of the film. Maybe this is just me, but I find that Maggie is a totally unsympathetic character. She's whiny and immature and even snotty at times. I care the least about her of all the characters in the film.. which is unfortunate because this is really a film revolving around her and the way her relationships (and those of her friends and family) work. I just wish that the role had been cast differently or spun a bit differently.. it would have brought a lot more to the film. Ultimately, I enjoy the film. The relationships and issues dealt with in the film are difficult to deal with, but the film does a reasonably good job.
