Summary: Emma, a Jane Austen classic
Review: Modern readers accustomed to the antics of King and Crichton often find reading Jane Austen dull. Emma, with Paltrow at the helm, serves as a fitting introduction for those who may find Austen's books boring. The movie is humorous and lively enough to keep the attention of even the most rabid Adam Sandler devotee.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Adequate, but misses Austen's subtlety
Review: Emma goes riding. Emma shoots. Emma gets stuck in a bog and is rescued. If Emma had such an exciting life, she would not have needed to try to mold Harriet. Gwyneth Paltrow delivers an adequate performance, but demonstrates that she is entirely clueless about the humor in Austen's only decent novel.

Summary: A terribly BORING MOVIE!!!
Review: I had to watch this wretched film for one of my English classes. I could have gouged my eyes out towards the end. The only thing that kept me awake was the stunning beauty of Gwynyth Paltrow. She is an extraordinary actress so it makes me shudder to think she did this piece of trash. If you want to see her do perfect British then I firmly suggest Shakespeare In Love.

Summary: Who told her she could act?
Review: Does Paltrow think she is British? Can we get force her into early retirement? This woman cannot act for anything, and she is awful in this movie. The rest of the cast are good, but Paltrow ruined this movie for me.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: a "must have" film
Review: I never tire of watching this film. Since receiving it 2 months ago, I have watched it about 15 times. Truly a beautifully made, funny and romantic movie that will not lose its luster any time soon. Gwyneth Paltrow was a perfect choice to play Emma. She is a modern day Audrey Hepburn.

Summary: My Favorite Film . . .
Review: I ADORE this film! I completely disagree with some of the reviews out there; Paltrow and Northam did excellent jobs portraying their characters; the humor was excellent; the lines wonderful, and everything just so . . . perfect. I found the novel (as did some of my friends) particularly boring, but the movie is far from it. Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley absolutely MAKES the film . . . he is a wonderful actor; watch his eyes when he speaks or even just sits, and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, my friends and I all love this movie and reccomend it to ANYONE!!

Summary: Very enjoyable!
Review: I seen the A&E version with Kate Beckinsale first, and tend to be partial to it. Beckinsale played a spunky "Emma Woodhouse" with a lot of class, but also a lot to learn about being a woman and a friend. Gwyeth Paltrow played a fine Miss Woodhouse also. I haven't read the novel yet, so my opinion may change after I do, but both versions are very enjoyable!

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Quite a disappointment compared to the A&E version
Review: This version follows the novel more closely than the A&E version, but it lacks depth. The humor is almost campy at times. It seems they were so concerned with following the novel exactly that they forgot about quality. The scene catching butterflies is particularly bad. I guess we should leave Jane Austen novels to the Brits to get a realistic portrayal.

Summary: Funny, romantic, charming
Review: Being a hopeless romantic and a fan of Jane Austen's works, I immediately rushed to see this movie. Gwyneth Paltrow was superb as the foolish Emma Woodhouse who knows all but her own heart. Toni Collette did an excellent job as her naive friend, Harriet; and characters like Mr. Woodhouse steal the show with their hilarious performances. A humorous satire on the life of the wealthy, Emma is a must-see movie for any romantic like myself. You will love the movie, but the book is even better, so buy both and enjoy!
