Summary: An all-around superb film
Review: For some reason, people who see this movie either completely adore it or completely despise it. I will never understand those who despise it, because Emma is one of the most well-made movies I have seen. The entire cast is wonderful, with almost all of the actors accurately portraying the characters from Jane Austen's novel (which I believe everyone must read before they can fairly judge this movie). The score was excellent (apparently the Academy agreed) and the costumes were beautiful. Considering that Austen's novel is more than 400 pages long, I would have to say that the director did a fabulous job of turning it into a two hour movie. Gwyneth Paltrow is the exact Emma I envisioned when I read the novel for the first time, and Jeremy Northam is absolutely adorable as Mr. Knightley. The humor is subtle, but that is characteristic of most of Austen's novels. Despite the quality of this film, it's probably not for everyone. The language may be hard for some to take for two hours, and it is a period piece, which not everyone enjoys. However, I would still recommend this movie to anyone.

Summary: I've seen it a hundred times and won't get tired soon.
Review: This is absolutely the best movie made this decade! Even my teenage brother likes it, and when I'm with my girl friends, we watch it over and over and over and over and over! There's always a new word, a new glance, a new nuance of meaning to be found and laughed at! BUY IT, TRUST ME!

Summary: Jane Austin's intereting story
Review: Most of all, I like all actors and actresses. No one can play those roles better than they do. In addition, "Emma" makes me to recall all of Jane Austin's novels.

Summary: Have seen both versions and read the book...
Review: ...and I must say that actually the Paltrow version does adhere more closely to the tone and spirit (and dialogue) of the book. Only Harriet seems a little too robust in the Paltrow version, but Miss Bates (Sophie Thompson) is heartbreaking and Mr. Knightley and Mrs. "E" are wonderful. I did like Jane Fairfax in the A&E version, but she was actually physically quite similar to the "other" Jane. All in all, you can't go wrong watching either presentation and should treat yourself to both.

Summary: Lovely and Vivi, much better than Shakepear in Love
Review: Cast is nearly perfect, Gwyneth acting is natural and real, showing much of her beauty & wit, just like a real Emma in Jane Austen's novel. Her performance is much much better than Shakepear in Love.

Summary: Very good movie!
Review: This movie is another one of Jane Austin's books that tell how truely great they are. The cast works wonderfully together to create a real feeling for all of them. See this movie!

Summary: Jane Austen would have been pleased, I think
Review: I confess, I am an Austen fan. And this movie has me wishing for more. It seems to get over too soon. I was transported to another time. Beautiful. And, the lead characters were cast very well. However, Emma's father was more convincing in the BBC version.

If you are an Austen fan, or like period movies, or like romantic-happily-ever-after-movies then this is absolutely for you.

Summary: Beautifully Made
Review: I enjoyed this movie throughout, and I thought the acting was splendid, if you want to say superb. I am 14, and was not bored through this witty movie, and I'm sure many other teens may like this movie also. Excellent!

Summary: pleasant, feel-good movie and great for a rainy afternoon.
Review: This is a wonderful film. Very relaxing to watch. Modernized, yes, but still true to Austen's humor. Paltrow did an excellent job of playing Emma. The music is quite moving too. Great movie all around.

Summary: PALTROW VERSION RULES!
Review: It amazes me that so many people seem to prefer the Kate Beckinsale version of "Emma". I thought the Kate version fell way short. It didn't flesh out the characters nearly as well as the Gwyneth version, and if you weren't already familiar with the plot (basically, Emma's match-making), you wouldn't see much of it at all in the Kate version. I thought Kate did a tremendous job in Much Ado About Nothing, and in the drama One Against the Wind, but the script they handed her for Emma just didn't allow her to display her abilities. She's good, but the script leaves much to be desired. Gwyneth Paltrow's version was the first movie I had ever seen her in, and no matter what others say, I thought she really was a British actress! Her accent was cute and no problem for me.
