Rating: Summary: NUDITY NOT NECESSARY!! Review: An entertaining, but somewhat offensive look at what "might have been", but I was disappointed that it had so little depth. It's called a comedy, yet wasn't all that funny. Also not enough substance to be classified as a drama. The many references to other "Bard" works does NOT transform it into a fantastic, artistic masterpiece. The sexual relationships could have been IMPLIED without spelling them out so unnecessarily, and the acting, although good, wouldn't go down in history as exceptional if it hadn't been handed an Oscar for Best Picture. When you compare it to classics in the past (of different genres) such as It's A Wonderful Life, High Noon, North By Northwest, Ben-Hur, and Chariots of Fire; Shakespeare in Love just doesn't begin to come up to those standards of great films. It's entertaining, and amazingly enough was awarded Oscars, but for all but its most ardent fans, this one will fade into the past as just another entertaining, but not GREAT, movie.
Rating: Summary: funny and smart -- what are the chances of that? Review: i saw this movie after school about 3 weeks after its release; there were 10 people in the theater. with such a meager crowd, i didn't expect much from this movie. but this movie delivers line after line of pure brilliance! the screenplay: the weaving of romeo and juliet and twelfth night into the movie, is absolutely genius! in fact, i was so taken away by the writing, i also attended a play written by stoppard called "indian ink." once again, i was confronted with the same type of quips and sharp insights. but, as a warning, i personally did not believe this movie deserved the oscar for best picture. But this movie is definitely worth watching.
Rating: Summary: I cried Review: We received a DVD version of this movie two days ago... We got to watch it last night. I cried... It was so touching and entertaining. And I know, without a doubt, who should have received the Best Actor Award! What a crime for not recognizing the exceptional work of Mr. Fiennes.
Rating: Summary: This is a classic! Review: Writing doesn't get much better than this, and the ensemble cast, especially Dame Judi Dench (who deserved more than 6 minutes) and Joseph Fiennes bring this to life. After this movie, and Rosencrantz and Guildestern are Dead, I cannot wait for Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman's next work!
Rating: Summary: great movie, great DVD - superb image & sound, a few extras Review: I don't know if this movie deserved 7 Academy Awards or not, but it made me read the play again. Enough said.
Rating: Summary: Didn't care too much for the way W.S. was portrayed. Review: Sorry to disagree, but I thought the part of Shakespeare, and Joseph Fiennes who played it were a weak element in an otherwise enjoyable film. I agree that Rupert Everett would have made a better Shakespeare.
Rating: Summary: Shakespeare in love proves that their is comedy in love! Review: Shakespeare in love is a movie that was small and got bigger by word of mouth. It got the recognition it deserved to recieve. the movie gets you from the very beginning with its wit, charm, and wonderful score. the screenplay was top notch and the acting by everyone superb. This is a movie one can watch again and again and never get sick of but love more and more. To whom it may concern, the score was just magnificent from the very beginning.
Rating: Summary: Great film. Disappointing DVD Review: The film is everything one expects and more. Brilliant writing. Superior acting. BUT the DVD as advertised above just isn't there! There is no Director's commentary! No deleted scenes! No "Shakespeare facts"! Indeed, the DVD doesn't even boast the extras that are standard on most. No subtitles. No "production notes". No Cast bios. It is the film (and a trailer), and NOTHING ELSE. Fair enough, but it should be sold that way!
Rating: Summary: Not much depth and it won best picture?!? Review: The best thing abot this movie was Joseph Fiennes. Gwyneth Paltrow's performance wasn't worth anything, all she did was hop into bed with Fiennes and yell one liners. (Oscar should've gone to Cate Blanchett, but at lest she got the BAFTA) The best picture should have gone to (need I say it) Saving Private Ryan. I was disappointed by this movie. The Academy always tries to hate on Spielberg. But there were good parts, like Dench and Affleck. But the rest wasnothing but light fluff.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite movies all-time! Review: I had no expectations at all from Shakespeare in Love when I saw it in January. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and its quality and found it very clever how potentially the story of Romeo and Juliet could have been created by William Shakespeare. I saw it with a friend who loved it too, and I commented back in January to many people that I could see the movie winning some awards, it was that good! My husband enjoyed it as well the following week, when I went with him (for my second time!) - he was pleasantly surprised how much he enjoyed it, because he was expecting it to be a 'chick flick'! I loved the music and bought the CD immediately. Who cares if it is not historically accurate? It shows just how create some people can be, to dream up this wonderful story and then find actors/actresses who can carry it off! Excellent costumes and wonderful acting. Overall, a fantastic film!
