Summary: Pretty Boring Woman
Review: This movie was painful to watch and even painful to remember. Everything Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant did was either telegraphed two films in advance or as believable as Julia Roberts voting for Pat Buchanan. Never let it be said, though, that it was ever interesting or funny. Julia Roberts can be very funny and engaging, but here she just sleepwalks through her role (with occasional hystrionics thrown in for contrast). Hugh Grant is at his funniest only when trying to explain his personal life on a late night talk show. Julia Roberts fans: save yourself the trouble and throw Pretty Woman back in the VCR one more time. I'd write more but I'm getting so sleepy just thinking about it...

Summary: It brought out the romantic in me...
Review: I can compare Notting Hill to a fairy tale where a prince falls in love with a commoner or vice versa & everyone lives happily ever after. That's the case here when a celebrity falls in love with a common guy running a not-so-profitable travel bookstore.

I haven't read a fairy tale in a long time & life's realities surely have taken the magic out. But after watching the movie, I felt light at heart once again & ready to fall in love.

What picks my curiosity though is what will happen to them after that press/media conference where they both declared love for each other. Things will definitely be different & how they will be able to reconcile with it is something my 'ground-level-head' always try to raise out. But of course, the movie has to end in a much simpler, sweeter way so as not to ruin the hopeful romantic in all of us.

Summary: nice understated romance.
Review: It has the most intimate of british humour (notice the spelling) with Hugh Grant's friends and family. The romance is great though the story is a little roller-coaster-like. Definitely a recommendation by me.

Summary: The Best!
Review: I love this movie! It funny, and at the same time really romantic! I was really surprised after watching this movie how good it was. It really caught my feelings!

Summary: "It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart..."
Review: As a "celebrity" of sorts, Notting Hill has a special appeal for me. I was just starting a relationship with a "commoner" when the movie released, and since we lived 2500 miles apart we each planned to see it in our own cities and discuss it later. But in a bid for romance he flew down to take me to the movie and then flew back again that evening. Awww!

I could definitely realte to Anna Scott's turmoil in dealing with image and celebrity, and my boyfriend to William Thacker trying to understand it. The conversation in the morning about Rita Hayworth is a lot more truth than poetry. Do people go to bed with "Brandy Alexandre the porn star" and become disappointed when they discover it's just me? It's an almost insurmountable task for a commoner to overcome being judged as a fan and be invited into the heart of the person behind the name. Kudos to those who try. But the instant you hit a bump the celebrity guard goes up, be it Will's "masturbating Welshman" spilling the beans on Anna's whereabouts, or (well, that's personal).

All in all, Notting Hill was a joy to see and fresh enough to see several times. The music was new and unique enough to prompt me to buy the CD, which I rarely ever do. "She" by Elvis Costello is now my personal theme song. I also bought the video when it came out, which is another rarity. Like all romantic comedies there is a meeting of the minds and a melting of the hearts. I thought I, too, had a happy ending, but as it turns out, real life isn't like Hollywood or the many streets named Kensington in the corner of London known as Notting Hill. But having watched the video for the first time after the fact of my failed attempt at bliss, the appeal and message still held up. My faith was restored that I still might one day enjoy the often elusive "happy ending."

Summary: NOT a flick for THIS chick...
Review: I would like to strongly disagree with the review written by a customer who called this movie a "Chick Flick." I would consider "Notting Hill" a flick only for chicks (and, what would the male equivalent be: dudes? guys? jocks?) with a high threshold for nauseatingly treacly sweet trash. I also disagree with the reviewer's insistance that the acting "wasn't bad," since it was, in fact, absolutely dreadful. But worst of all was the trite dialogue, which suffered an execution that was more painful to watch than having one's tongue impaled with a dozen rusty knitting needles. My friends and I actually shrieked in agony as we watched Julia and Hugh limply deliver some of their insipid lines. Please save yourself the trouble and do Not, I repeat DO NOT, buy this video.

Summary: A predictable "chick" movie.
Review: I only watched this movie because I was a prisoner on a very long and boring transatlantic flight. Otherwise I would never have bothered. The acting wasn't bad, but it was very predictable and both Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant played their typical typecast parts to the hilt. I'm getting a bit tired of Hugh Grant's fumbling, ain't-I-a-kinda-cute airs. But apparently his affected charm is working. Julia Roberts stars as Anna, the beautiful, rich actress looking for the audience's sympathy for her terribly "difficult" life. I have a feeling that most women will love this sappy movie and will be running for the kleenex box big time! I would not consider buying this soap opera, but fans of Grant/Roberts might appreciate it.

Summary: Romantic but weird
Review: I think this movie is so romantic at the same time it does not make a good sense at all. She sometimes acted as if she loved him. However, she already had a boyfriend which did not make sense in a way because if she still loved her boyfriend, I thought it was so odd when she ( Julia Roberts) slept with him( Hugh Grant)while she still loved her boyfriend. So, I guess both of them have done really good acting, but the plot itself is odd. Anyway, if you would like to find romance in your life from a boring life, this movie is very good for that.

Summary: Sweet..But Is There Anything Else?
Review: OK, so "Notting Hill" is a sweet movie. The scenery and music all blends in so well with it, in fact too well that we soon forget about the story, which was too slow. I didn't see much chemistry between Julia and Hugh, and not enough convincing was done to see how they fell in love and why they needed each other. The other casts were really the ones who made this film going, and I guess that's how it was able to hold on for two hours where it was kind of wrapped up too neatly and too predictably. If you're looking for this kind of stuff, though, then this movie is perfect for you.
